    As a Matter of Factions: The Budgetary Implications of Shifting Factional Control in Japan’s LDP

    For 38 years, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) maintained single-party control over the Japanese government. This lack of partisan turnover in government has frustrated attempts to explain Japanese government policy changes using political variables. In this paper, we look for intraparty changes that may have led to changes in Japanese budgetary policy. Using a simple model of agenda-setting, we hypothesize that changes in which intraparty factions “control” the LDP affect the party’s decisions over spending priorities systematically. This runs contrary to the received wisdom in the voluminous literature on LDP factions, which asserts that factions, whatever their raison d’ĂȘtre, do not exhibit different policy preferences. We find that strong correlations do exist between which factions comprise the agenda-setting party “mainstream” and how the government allocates spending across pork-barrel and public goods items

    Maternal acrylamide exposure during pregnancy and fetal growth: a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of epidemiological studies

Objectives: We performed a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of epidemiological studies evaluating the relationship between maternal acrylamide exposure during pregnancy and the risk of being small for gestational age (SGA) and birth weight, birth head circumference and birth length. Methods: We performed the literature search in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, until June 6th, 2022. Studies carried out in mother-newborn pairs, assessing maternal acrylamide exposure during pregnancy, either via dietary assessments or biomarkers i.e., hemoglobin adducts of acrylamide (AA-Hb) and glycidamide (GA-Hb), and evaluating birth outcomes were included. We employed a random-effects model to assess the pooled effect estimates and their 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the association between acrylamide exposure and birth outcomes. Risk of Bias for Nutrition Observational Studies tool was used for bias assessment. Results: Out of 169 records identified, five original studies were eligible, including 53,870 mother-newborn pairs in total. Means were 21.9 Όg/day for estimated dietary acrylamide exposure (3 studies), and 18.4 and 14.9 pmol/g for AA-Hb and GA-Hb, respectively (2 studies). Higher risk of SGA and lower birth weight and head circumference were observed in the highest quartile of AA-Hb [odds ratio (OR): 1.20 (95% CI: 1.08; 1.33); mean difference (MD): -131 g (95% CI: -204; -58) and -0.31 cm (95% CI: -0.58; -0.04), respectively], and GA-Hb [OR: 1.36 (95% CI: 1.13; 1.64), MD: -161 g (95% CI: -271; -52); and MD: -0.38 cm (95% CI: -0.66; -0.10), respectively], whereas a lower birth length was observed only in the highest quartile of GA-Hb (MD: -0.85 cm (95% CI: -1.38; -0.33). Results from the dose-response meta-analysis between increasing maternal acrylamide exposure during pregnancy and birth weight showed no clear evidence of a deviation from linearity. Conclusions: Overall, our findings strengthen the evidence of an adverse effect of maternal acrylamide exposure during pregnancy on fetal growth.     Multi-boson effects and the normalization of the two-pion correlation function

    The two-pion correlation function can be defined as a ratio of either the measured momentum distributions or the normalized momentum space probabilities. We show that the first alternative avoids certain ambiguities since then the normalization of the two-pion correlator contains important information on the multiplicity distribution of the event ensemble which is lost in the second alternative. Existing observational data on the relationship between dietary exposure to acrylamide and risk of cancer are inconsistent. We performed a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of epidemiological studies evaluating the association between dietary acrylamide exposure and several site-specific cancer. A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases until March 7, 2022. Studies were eligible if they were carried out in non-occupationally exposed adults, assessed dietary acrylamide exposure (”g/day) and reported risk estimates of cancer incidence (all but gynecological cancers). Using a random-effects model, we performed a metaanalysis of site-specific cancer risk comparing the highest vs. lowest category of dietary acrylamide exposure. We also carried out a one-stage dose-response metaanalysis assessing the shape of the association. Out of 1,994 papers screened, 31 were eligible (total of 16 studies), which included 1,151,189 participants in total, out of whom 48,175 developed cancer during the median follow-up period of 14.9 years (range 7.3–33.9). The mean estimated dose of dietary acrylamide across studies was 23 ”g/day. Pooled analysis showed no association between the highest vs. lowest dietary acrylamide exposure and each site-specific cancer investigated, with no evidence of thresholds in the dose-response meta-analysis. There were also no associations between dietary acrylamide exposure and the risk of cancers when stratifying by smoking status, except for increased risk of lung cancer in smokers.     Inclusive production of charged hadrons in photon–photon collisions

    The inclusive production of charged hadrons in the collisions of quasi-real photons (e+e−→e+e−+Xe+e−→e+e−+X) has been measured using the OPAL detector at LEP. The data were taken at e+e−e+e− centre-of-mass energies from 183 to 209 GeV209 GeV. The differential cross-sections as a function of the transverse momentum and the pseudorapidity of the hadrons are compared to theoretical calculations of up to next-to-leading order (NLO) in the strong coupling constant αsαs. The data are also compared to a measurement by the L3 Collaboration, in which a large deviation from the NLO predictions is observed

    Search for single top quark production at LEP2

    A search for single top quark production via flavour changing neutral currents (FCNC) was performed with data collected by the OPAL detector at the e^+e^− collider LEP. Approximately 600 pb^(−1) of data collected at –209 GeV were used to search for the FCNC process e^+e^−→tc(u)→bWc(u). This analysis is sensitive to the leptonic and the hadronic decay modes of the W boson. No evidence for a FCNC process is observed. Upper limits at the 95% confidence level on the single top production cross-section as a function of the centre-of-mass energy are derived. Limits on the anomalous coupling parameters Îș(Îł) and Îș(Z) are determined from these results

    Angular analysis of the muon pair asymmetry at LEP 1

    Data on muon pair production obtained by the OPAL Collaboration at centre of mass energies near the Z peak are analysed. Small angular mismatches between the directions of the two muons are used to assess the effects of initial state photon radiation and initial-final-state radiation interference on the forward–backward asymmetry of muon pairs. The dependence of the asymmetry on the invariant mass of the pair is measured in a model-independent way. Effective vector and axial-vector couplings of the Z boson are determined and compared to the Standard Model expectations

    Estrogen-Like Effects of Cadmium in Vivo Do Not Appear to be Mediated via the Classical Estrogen Receptor Transcriptional Pathway

    Cadmium is a toxic metal classified as human carcinogen and ubiquitously found in our environment mainly from anthropogenic activities. Exposure to cadmium has been associated with increased risk of certain hormone-dependent cancers in humans, and the metal has been proposed to possess endocrine disruptive properties by mimicking the physiological actions of estrogens. However, the mechanisms behind these effects are unclear. The overall aim of this thesis was to provide mechanistic insights into the estrogenicity of cadmium that may have implications for the human health. To achieve this aim, investigations on the estrogen-like effects of cadmium as well as possible involvement of classical/non-classical estrogen receptor signaling was studied in mice, and these mechanisms were further scrutinized in cell-based models. Furthermore, associations of biomarker of cadmium exposure with endogenous circulating sex hormones were evaluated in a population-based study of women. Results presented here indicate that exposure to cadmium does not affect the genomic estrogen response in vivo in mice, suggesting that classical estrogen signaling is not targeted by cadmium. However, some estrogen-like effects were observed in cadmium exposed mice, i.e. significant thickening of uterine epithelia, in the absence of uterine weight increase, and activation of ERK1/2 MAPKs in the liver. This suggests the existence of alternative signaling pathways modulated by cadmium. In addition, exposure to a wide dose range of cadmium, dose-dependently increased the expression of the endogenous genes Mt1, Mt2, p53, c-fos, and Mdm2 in mouse liver, with p53 being the most sensitive gene. However, phosphorylation of ERK1/2 was already induced at the lowest exposure level (0.5”g/kg body weight), rendering ERK1/2 a more sensitive marker of exposure than any change in gene expression. Furthermore, in vivo findings suggest that cadmium-induced effects are markedly concentration dependent: low-level exposure activates protein-kinases whereas high-level exposure turns on cellular stress responses. The data from in vitro studies indicate that cadmium at regular human exposure levels activates protein-kinase signaling through Raf-MEK-ERK/MAPKs, and we identified EGFR and GPR30 as the mediating receptors. This cadmium-induced activation of protein-kinases further leads to a disturbance in Mdm2/p53 balance, with a significant increase in the Mdm2/p53 ratio in the presence of genotoxic compounds, which in turn suggest that cadmium may disrupt stress response to genotoxins. In 438 postmenopausal women, a positive association was observed between the concentrations of cadmium in blood and testosterone in serum, while an inverse association was observed with estradiol. This may suggest that cadmium affects steroidogenesis. In conclusion, data presented in this thesis collectively suggests that cadmium-induced estrogen-like effects do not involve classical estrogen receptor signaling but rather appear to be mediated via membrane-associated signaling. The activation/ transactivation of GPR30/EGFR-Raf-MEK-ERK/MAPKs and Mdm2 represent a general mechanism by which cadmium may exert its effects. Since EGFR, ERK and Mdm2 are all known key players in cancer promotion, cadmium-induced activation of these and disturbance in the estradiol/testosterone balance in women may have implications for the promotion/development of hormone-related cancers
