    Antithrombotic Therapy in Cardiac Embolism

    Get PDF
Anticoagulation is indicated in most cardioembolic ischemic strokes for secondary prevention. In many cardiac conditions, anticoagulation is also indication for primary stroke prevention, mainly when associated to vascular risk factors. Anticoagulation should be started as soon as possible, as it is safe even in moderate acute strokes. The efficacy of early anticoagulation after cardioembolic stroke in relation to outcome has not been assessed adequately, but there is evidence from animal models and clinical studies that anticoagulation with unfractionated heparin is associated with a better outcome mediated in part by its anti-inflammatory properties

La Revolución Abasí como paradigma de movimiento social: análisis de su desarrollo, causas y consecuencias.

    Get PDF

Do Classes in Cooperative Classrooms Have a Positive Influence on Creativity and Teamwork Skills for Engineering Students?

    Get PDF
Contributing to the acquisition of professional creativity and teamwork skills has been a special challenge for some of the subjects taught at the Technical University of Madrid (UPM), and this has been a starting point for the work described in this paper. Some professors have intuited that the use of cooperative classrooms could facilitate the acquisition of these skills. We describe the new methodologies applied within cooperative classrooms by some professors, and present the procedure for measuring students’ perception of their own learning outcomes, skill improvements, and overall satisfaction with the use of this kind of classroom. For this project, 250 students enrolled in several subjects answered a questionnaire. The featuresof thesubjectsinvolved intheproject arewidely disparate. We present the results of the statistical analysis with special emphasis on creativity and teamwork skills, and we conclude that the use of cooperative classroom has a positive influence on the acquisition of these skills. This work has the added value of being the first analysis of student perception of the use of cooperative classroom in the acquisition of creativity and teamwork skills

Characterising large-scale meteorological patterns associated with winter precipitation and snow accumulation in a mountain range in the Iberian Peninsula (Sierra de Guadarrama)

    Get PDF
Snow precipitation in mountains surrounded by semi-arid regions represents an important reservoir of fresh water during the melting season. The snow cover helps to compensate for the scarce precipitation that occurs during their long summer droughts. Knowing the phenomenology that leads to winter precipitation and snow at these areas becomes even more relevant in a context of climate change. Precipitation in Sierra de Guadarrama, a medium size mountain range in the middle of the Iberian Plateau, is the main source of fresh water for millions of inhabitants living under its area of influence, for an active industry and for agriculture and farming. In addition, scarce but heavy snow events affect logistics, transport and security in an area with abundant ground and air traffic. This work analyses the links between large scale atmospheric patterns and the complex winter precipitation and snow cover dynamics observed at local scale. Applying principal component analysis and K-means clustering on geopotential height field, a set of circulation weather types are obtained. The contribution of each circulation weather type to precipitation, snow and heavy snow events is analysed, and favouring conditions leading to snowfalls are identified. Results from this work can be useful as a framework for future modelling exercises, statistical downscaling of climate change scenarios, or even for the development of early warning systems

The Influence of Stud Characteristics of Football Boots Regarding Player Injuries

    Get PDF
Background: the main aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between sole pattern parameters of football boots with the frequency of injuries that occur in semiprofessional and amateur footballers. Methods: The study sample was composed of 77 male football players. All were at least 18 years old, played at least 10 h per week, gave signed informed consent to take part and properly completed the Visual Analogue Scale. This study analysed data from each player’s medical history, including age, injuries, years of practice, field type and surface condition information. Results: The visual analogic score in semiprofessional players was higher (2.05 ± 2.43) than in amateur players (1.00 ± 1.1). A total of 141 lesions were collected, equivalent to 1.81 injuries for each football player studied (n = 77). The result of the ROC curve indicated that the player’s years of practice could predict significantly (p < 0.05) the presence of lower limb injuries, with an area under the curve of 0.714. Conclusions: This study described the predictive capacity of sole pattern characteristics concerning lower limb injuries in amateur and semiprofessional footballers. Football boot variables associated with the number of studs were associated with foot and ankle overload injuries.Partial funding for open access charge: Universidad de Málag

Antibodies to endothelial cells in Behçet's disease: cell-binding heterogeneity and association with clinical activity

    Get PDF
OBJECTIVES--To investigate the prevalence and characteristics of antibodies to endothelial cells (aEC) from large vessel and from microvasculature in a group of patients with Behçet's disease (BD) to determine the relationship of these antibodies with clinical and laboratory features of the disease. METHODS--Thirty patients with BD were prospectively and consecutively studied. The aEC were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using endothelial cells derived from human umbilical vein (large vessel) as well as from retroperitoneal adipose tissue (microvasculature). RESULTS--Fifteen patients (50%) had aEC, either directed to large vessel [8(26%) patients] or microvascular [13(43%) patients] endothelial cells. The percentage of active patients was significantly higher in the aEC-positive group [12(80%) patients] compared with the aEC-negative group [5(33%) patients] (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS--Patients with BD have a high prevalence of aEC when microvascular endothelial cells are used in the assay. These antibodies seem to be a marker of disease activity in this condition, previously considered as negative for autoantibodies
