    Get PDF

Given that local natural building stone in our region, Galicia (North West of Spain) is granite, our interest was focused on the response of this stone type to laser cleaning. The aim of this work is to determine the change in colour as index of the response of galician granites to UV-Nd:YAG laser exposure. For this purpose samples of commercial granites from different quarries were irradiated at increasing fluences. Colour changes were determined through the analysis of digital images and expressed in the L*a*b* and L*h*C* colour models. The results enable the establishment of application limits of laser cleaning to these material

[Abstract] The goal of this work is to carry out an economic analysis of a novel floating offshore wind structure, of which the main material is concrete: the SATH® platform. It takes a step forward in floating marine wind energy research, in which traditional platforms are mainly composed of steel. The technique to calculate the costs of the platform and the economic parameters to decide if the farm is economically feasible are explained in the paper. This case study analyzes a possible farm of 500 MW located in Portugal and several scenarios considering different electric tariffs and capital costs (Scenario 1: electric tariff of 50 €/MWh and 6% of capital cost; Scenario 2: electric tariff of 50 €/MWh and 8% of capital cost; Scenario 3: electric tariff of 150 €/MWh and 6% of capital cost; Scenario 4: electric tariff of 150 €/MWh and 8% of capital cost). Results show the economic feasibility of a farm with the characteristics of Scenarios 3 and 4. This work is significant in order to provide a new approach to analyzing traditional floating offshore wind structures, which can represent a path towards the future of floating offshore renewable energy technologies.European Commission; EAPA_344/2016This research was funded by EAPA_344/2016 ARCWIND project, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund though the Interreg Atlantic Area Programme

Compositional depth profiles of gilded wood polychromes by means of LIBS

    No full text
The variety of techniques applied in gilded ornamentation and the possible existence of products of previous interventions make difficult the restoration process of these artworks which frequently include the removal of a brass-based paint (purpurin) added to cover the lack of gold leaf. The aim of this work is the characterization by means of LIBS of the different layers in gilded wood polychromes. For this purpose small pieces taken from two baroque altarpieces were analyzed using a Nd:YAG laser source operating at the wavelength of 355 nm to obtain characteristic LIBS spectra and compositional depth profiles.Xunta de Galicia; PGIDIT06CCP00901C

Financiado para publicación en acceso aberto: Universidade da Coruña/CISUG[Abstract] For the evolution and development of artificial reefs to attain the expected results, hydrodynamics is emerging as a key factor that must be taken analyzed in detail. In particular, thanks to the hydrodynamics of a given coastal area, suitable water circulation and velocity in the reef's interior can increase the yield and the renewal of nutrients favourable for larval settlement, along with reducing the sedimentation. This document proposes a methodology for determining the geometry of an artificial reef group adapted to the specific characteristics of the selected zone of installation, the Ría de Ares-Betanzos (NW Spain), based on hydrodynamic criteria by defining the Artificial Reef Tool (ART). The starting point of the ART tool is the existing reef model or AR unit's design –a modular construction with productive and protective features. Then a high-resolution hydrodynamic circulation model (HCM) is developed allowing the high-resolution site-specific computation of the flow pattern in the selected area. Finally, the results obtained are used as input for a hydrodynamic model for food delivery prediction (HMFDP), allowing the estimation of the food supply to each module. The results obtained lead to the definition of the geometry of the reef group. The authors gratefully acknowledge the financial support from the regional government of Galicia, Xunta de Galicia, through the project CN-10MMA003CT. Motor Fluctuations Development Is Associated with Non-Mostor Symptoms Burden Progression in Parkinson's Disease Patients : A 2-Year Follow-Up Study

    No full text
The aim of the present study was to analyze the progression of non-motor symptoms (NMS) burden in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients regarding the development of motor fluctuations (MF). PD patients without MF at baseline, who were recruited from January 2016 to November 2017 (V0) and evaluated again at a 2-year follow-up (V2) from 35 centers of Spain from the COPPADIS cohort, were included in this analysis. MF development at V2 was defined as a score ≥ 1 in the item-39 of the UPDRS-Part IV, whereas NMS burden was defined according to the Non-motor Symptoms Scale (NMSS) total score. Three hundred and thirty PD patients (62.67 ± 8.7 years old; 58.8% males) were included. From V0 to V2, 27.6% of the patients developed MF. The mean NMSS total score at baseline was higher in those patients who developed MF after the 2-year follow-up (46.34 ± 36.48 vs. 34.3 ± 29.07; p = 0.001). A greater increase in the NMSS total score from V0 to V2 was observed in patients who developed MF (+16.07 ± 37.37) compared to those who did not develop MF (+6.2 ± 25.8) (p = 0.021). Development of MF after a 2-year follow-up was associated with an increase in the NMSS total score (β = 0.128; p = 0.046) after adjustment to age, gender, years from symptoms onset, levodopa equivalent daily dose (LEDD) and the NMSS total score at baseline, and the change in LEDD from V0 to V2. In PD patients, the development of MF is associated with a greater increase in the NMS burden after a 2-year follow-up
