May the Smoke Keep Coming Out the Fireplace: Moral Connections between Rural Tourism and Socio-Ecological Resilience in the EUME Region, Galicia

[Abstract] For several decades, tourism has been considered an important instrument for the sustainable development of rural areas. However, a great deal of scholarship has cast a doubt on the actual economic and ecological impacts of many of these initiatives. Acknowledging these critiques, we argue in this paper that a more accurate examination of the implication of rural development projects based on tourism should not merely look at the number of overnight stays or the income generated, but also at the multiple, subtle and complex implications of tourism for socio-ecological resilience. In order to do this, we argue, it is crucial to pay attention to the moral values underpinning tourism practices. Through an ethnographic analysis of the material, symbolic and experiential transformations brought about by a number of tourism initiatives in a rural region in Galicia, our goal is to discuss the complex connections between the promotion of this new activity, the diversification of the local economy, and the social reproduction of local communities and their specific forms of human-environment engagements.Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad; CSO2017-84893-

Work and Social Adjustment Scale (WSAS): psychometric characteristics of a Spanish adaptation in a clinical population

    Get PDF
Background: The Work and Social Adjustment Scale (WSAS) is an instrument that can be easily applied for routine evaluation of the impact of mental disorders on patient functioning. In spite of the interest in its use, there is very little information available on its psychometric characteristics and even less in Spanish. Aims: The objective of this study was to analyse its psychometric characteristics. Method: The sample consisted of 441 patients treated in a community mental health unit. They filled out the WSAS and two psychopathology measures, one for anxiety and the other for depression. Fifty-five of them, chosen at random, were asked to fill out the scale again a second time to explore its temporal reliability. Results: The scale showed high internal consistency, a single factor that explained 60.4% of the variance, and temporal reliability of .78 for the total score. Significant correlations were found between the WSAS scores and the psychopathological measures, as well as significant differences between those working and those on leave. Conclusions: The results confirm the validity and reliability of the scale and support its possible use for routine evaluation of the functional impact of mental disorders

The 13th International Electronic Conference on Synthetic Organic Chemistry session Symposium on Microwave Assisted SynthesisMicrowave irradiation of N-[2-(phenylmethyl)phenyl]benzamide with potassium tert-butoxide leads to a 1:1 ratio of the expected product from Madelung's reaction and 9H-Dibenzo[a,c]carbazole. This one seems to come from a competitive reaction pathway rather than from thermal conrotatory electrocyclic of 2,3-diphenyl- 3H-IndoleXUNTA DE GALICIA for financial support: PGIDIT05PXIB26201PR and USC for a predoctoral fellowship to JC

Of Fears and Budgets: Strategies of Control in Vespa velutina Invasion and Lessons for Best Management Practices

[Abstrat] Implementing management practices for the control of invasive species can be a complex task with multiple dimensions, where the identification of stakeholders and drivers of those practices is of paramount importance. The invasive hornet Vespa velutina has spread across Europe and Asia from its native range in SE Asia in recent years. A common control method is the removal and destruction of its nests on citizens’ request to call centers. In this paper we have explored the knowledge and main factors that influence the perceptions of the citizens on the species in an invaded municipality in NW Spain, as well as the management practices of the municipal emergency unit responsible for nest removal activities. Our analysis brings out multiple drivers of management practices that derive both from the citizens’ and practitioners’ knowledge, and highlights several points of conflict between both stakeholder groups connected to (1) the degree of service provided to the local population, (2) the risk of allergic reactions as a motive to urge removals, or (3) the quality of information provided by mass media. Our results support the crucial importance of environmental education programs that seek to increase the knowledge of the general public about the threats of invasive species. Such programs might be incorporated to implement and optimize management plans of V. velutina by enhancing communication between experts and local population

This article reviews the economic relations between the Canary Islands and Latin America in the period 2000-2011. Pancreatic and psoas abscesses as a late complication of intravesical administration of bacillus Calmette-Guerin for bladder cancer: a case report and review of the literature

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) is a live attenuated strain of <it>Mycobacterium bovis</it> that has been used to treat urothelial carcinoma since 1976, and has been reported to eradicate disease in more than 70% of patients with <it>in situ</it> and stage I disease. To the best of our knowledge, we report the first case of disseminated bacillus Calmette-Guerin infection causing multiple abscesses affecting the pancreatic head and right psoas muscle, diagnosed 5 years after intravesical treatment with bacillus Calmette-Guerin therapy for bladder cancer.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>An 83-year-old Caucasian man was hospitalized with a 2-month history of back pain, anorexia, generalized weakness and a 47-pound weight loss. He had previously undergone two transurethral resections for high-grade transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder and had received 12 intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guerin instillations without any complications. He complained of abdominal pain in his right flank. A computed tomography scan of the abdomen showed multiple abscesses affecting the pancreatic head and right psoas muscle. Growth of <it>Mycobacterium bovis</it> was determined in cultures of the purulent material obtained by surgical drainage of the abscesses.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This case illustrates the fact that although intravesical administration of bacillus Calmette-Guerin is generally considered to be safe, it is not exempt from complications and these could appear immediately after treatment or as a delayed complication many years later.</p

The European community Directive (ECD) referring to bathing water quality establishes its admissibility as a function of some limit concentrations, included these of faexal coliforms. First, the usual identification between the percentage of samples and the percentage of time that the concentration is over the limit is shown to be incorrect. Next a methodology in probabilistic terms is developed to design sewer system elements as a function of the contamination produced by overflows in coastal zones
