    Digital informed consent: Possibilities and challenges in biobanks for health research

    Biobanks are key infrastructures in biomedical research, storing and providing biological samples, personal and clinical data. Informed con- sent is a central piece of the process, as a means to respect each parti- cipants’ dignity, integrity and to acknowledge their capacity to express autonomous decisions. Providing adequate information, while ensuring the voluntariness of their decision are essential to an effective consent. Requesting informed consent usually takes place in the context of heal- thcare, where paper forms are still widely preferred, when not manda- tory and when person to person relationships are crucial. As biobanks are moving fast to implement automated protocols from biological samples processing to data collection, it is relevant to discuss the challenges posed by the digitalization of informed consent. To this end, such transition will be critically discussed using dynamic consent as a starting point to highlight the opportunities of digital tools, but also the relevance of healthcare context.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

    Characterisation of Archaeological High-tin Bronze Corrosion Structures

    Part of this work was carried out in the framework of the projects: 'Singing Bronze', funded by Banco Santander through the prize Santander/NOVA 2016; 'IberianTin' (PTDC/HAR-ARQ/32290/2017), funded by European Regional Development Fund funds through the regional program of Lisbon and through national funds through the Fundacao para a Ciencia e a Tecnologia (FCT) (Foundation for Science and Technology); UID/CTM/50025/2019 granted to CENIMAT/i3N, financed through FEDER funds by COMPETE 2020 and national funds through FCT.Since ancient times, the use of high-tin bronze alloys (>17 wt.%) has been mainly limited to the production of specific objects such as mirrors and bells. High-tin bronzes can show distinctive colour reflection, as well as mechanical properties and corrosion resistance that clearly distinguish them from the classical bronze composition (with 8–12 wt.% tin). In the present study samples of archaeological high-tin bronze bells were studied by optical microscopy, SEM-EDX, and Raman imaging with the aim of characterising their microstructural long-term corrosion patterns. Results show the presence of high quantities of δ phase, when compared to the classical bronze composition, which makes some corrosion structures more visible in these alloys. The corrosion morphologies show selective corrosion of different metal phases along depth of corrosion, which were attributed to different oxygen potentials. This study proposes a classification of four types of corrosion structures occurring in two-phase bronzes as a consequence of aeration conditions during burial time and aeration within the corrosion structure.authorsversionepub_ahead_of_prin

    Increased lung inflammation with oxygen supplementation in tracheotomized spontaneously breathing rabbits: an experimental prospective randomized study

    BACKGROUND: Mechanical ventilation is a well-known trigger for lung inflammation. Research focuses on tidal volume reduction to prevent ventilator-induced lung injury. Mechanical ventilation is usually applied with higher than physiological oxygen fractions. The purpose of this study was to investigate the after effect of oxygen supplementation during a spontaneous ventilation set up, in order to avoid the inflammatory response linked to mechanical ventilation. METHODS: A prospective randomised study using New Zealand rabbits in a university research laboratory was carried out. Rabbits (n = 20) were randomly assigned to 4 groups (n = 5 each group). Groups 1 and 2 were submitted to 0.5 L/min oxygen supplementation, for 20 or 75 minutes, respectively; groups 3 and 4 were left at room air for 20 or 75 minutes. Ketamine/xylazine was administered for induction and maintenance of anaesthesia. Lungs were obtained for histological examination in light microscopy. RESULTS: All animals survived the complete experiment. Procedure duration did not influence the degree of inflammatory response. The hyperoxic environment was confirmed by blood gas analyses in animals that were subjected to oxygen supplementation, and was accompanied with lower mean respiratory rates. The non-oxygen supplemented group had lower mean oxygen arterial partial pressures and higher mean respiratory rates during the procedure. All animals showed some inflammatory lung response. However, rabbits submitted to oxygen supplementation showed significant more lung inflammation (Odds ratio = 16), characterized by more infiltrates and with higher cell counts; the acute inflammatory response cells was mainly constituted by eosinophils and neutrophils, with a relative proportion of 80 to 20% respectively. This cellular observation in lung tissue did not correlate with a similar increase in peripheral blood analysis. CONCLUSIONS: Oxygen supplementation in spontaneous breathing is associated with an increased inflammatory response when compared to breathing normal room air. This inflammatory response was mainly constituted with polymorphonuclear cells (eosinophils and neutrophils).     Key drivers for the adoption of circular economy practices in the tourist accommodation sector

    Purpose – This article assesses the degree of adoption of the circular economy model in the tourist accommodation sector. Additionally, the study aims to understand whether the type of accommodation, size and year of construction or remodelling have an impact on the adoption of circular economy practices. Design/methodology/approach – The study is based on a survey administered to directors and owners of tourist accommodation facilities in Portugal. The questionnaire was developed based on an extensive literature review of circular economy practices in the accommodation sector. Findings – Accommodation companies currently operate in a linear economy model and are still in the early stages of transitioning to a more circular economic model. Among the most commonly implemented practices are those that represent expenditure savings for accommodation companies. The findings also suggest a growing awareness and commitment to sustainability and circular economy practices in the tourist accommodation sector, particularly in more recently constructed or renovated accommodation. Originality/value – To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to evaluate the accommodation characteristics that impact the adoption of sustainability and circular economy practices in the tourist accommodation sector. It contributes to the literature by providing primary quantitative data supporting the adoption of such practices.     Highly conductive p-type nanocrystalline silicon films deposited by RF-PECVD using silane and trimethylboron mixtures at high pressure

    In this paper we present a study of boron-doped nc-Si:H films prepared by PECVD at high depositionpressure (>4 mbar), high plasma power and low substrate temperature (7 (U cm)1) andhigh optical band gap (>1.7 eV). Modeling of ellipsometry spectra reveals that the film growth mechanismshould proceed through a sub-surface layer mechanism that leads to silicon crystallization.The obtained films are very good candidates for application in amorphous and nanocrystalline siliconsolar cells as a p-type window layer.Peer reviewe

    Performance as a classification criterion of tourist origins and destinations

    The definition of performance variables, which can be used as indicators of the results obtained/to be obtained, is a fundamental prerequisite in the carrying out of any evaluation process. Portfolio analysis has been used as a tool for the study of market segments, namely of tourist destinations. However, a review of the literature did not identify a single case where the performance variable is adjusted to the nature of the object. In fact, contrary to many other situations, the use of performance variables in absolute terms does not appear to be the most recommendable solution given that the total volume is conditioned by the size of the territory and, above all, by the number of inhabitants. In other words, for a certain level of socio-economic development, larger countries (in terms of size and number of inhabitants) will tend to have higher absolute values. Besides this, the empirical studies reviewed contain little, or no, information about competition, being temporally static. Although in some cases growth rate is used as a variable, thus presupposing the consideration of two magnitudes in two different moments in time, more than one register per object is never considered, meaning that evolutive analyses are not viable. Consequently, a performance proxy was developed which enables a direct comparison between generating countries (origins) and between destinations, regardless of the number of inhabitants. The selection of the performance proxy can depend on the object of study. In any case, it should always permit the evaluation, in general terms, of the results obtained by the destination for the set of origins under analysis and the results generated by the origin for the set of destinations under study. The proposed tool is a component of a model for the identification of priority market segments, and is constituted by a system of orthogonal axes which produces four quadrants that are distinct in terms of intensity (axis OY) and growth (axis OX) of tourist flows. The tool, like the model, can be applied to any type of destination (city, region or country) and to any market segmentation criterion (geographic, demographic, behavioural, psychographic or other). In the study reported here, the instrument is applied to the 15 Member States of the European Union (before its expansion on May 1st 2004), for the period from 1996 to 2001. Eurostat was the sole source of data for the study. The UK and Ireland are the countries classified as ‘Progressing Origins’. With 16.8% of the population, they increased their contribution from 17.7% to 21.9% and are responsible for 38.7% of the growth that occurred between 1996 and 2001. Spain, Greece and Ireland are the countries classified as ‘Progressing Destinations’. With 14.4% of the population, they increased their share of the market from 21.5% to 24.2%, capturing 35.1% of the growth that occurred between 1996 and 2001

    Broadband photocurrent enhancement in a-Si:H solar cells with plasmonic back reflectors

In this paper, we study the enhancement in the opto-electronic performance of thin a-Si:H solar cells due to the light scattering effects of plasmonic back reflectors (PBRs), composed of self-assembled silver nanoparticles (NPs), incorporated on the cells' rear contact. The optical properties of the PBRs are investigated according to the morphology of the NPs, which can be tuned by the fabrication parameters. By analyzing sets of solar cells built on distinct PBRs we show that the photocurrent enhancement achieved in the a-Si:H light trapping window (600 - 800 nm) stays in linear relation with the PBRs diffuse reflection. The best-performing PBRs allow a pronounced broadband photocurrent enhancement in the cells which is attributed not only to the plasmon-assisted light scattering from the NPs but also to the front surface texture originated from the conformal growth of the cell material over the particles. As a result, remarkably high values of J(sc) and V-oc are achieved in comparison to those previously reported in the literature for the same type of devices.     OCT in Alzheimer's Disease: Thinning of the RNFL and Superior Hemiretina

    BACKGROUND: Peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) and internal macular layer thinning have been demonstrated in Alzheimer's disease (AD) with optical coherence tomography (OCT) studies. The purpose of this study is to compare the pRNFL thickness and overall retinal thickness (RT) in AD patients with non-AD patients, using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and determine the sectors most characteristically affected in AD. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed to determine the pRNFL and overall macular RT thicknesses in AD and non-AD patients, attending a tertiary hospital center. For pRNFL, the global and six peripapillary quadrants were calculated, and for overall RT values, the nine Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) areas were used. A multiple regression analysis was applied to assess the effects of disease, age, gender, spherical equivalent, visual acuity, intraocular pressure, axial length and blood pressure on pRNFL and overall macular RT. RESULTS: A total of 202 subjects, including 50 eyes of 50 patients with mild AD (mean age 73.10; SD = 5.36 years) and 152 eyes of 152 patients without AD (mean age 71.03; SD = 4.62 years). After Bonferroni correction, the pRNFL was significantly thinner for the AD group globally and in the temporal superior quadrant (10.76 μm and 20.09 μm mean decrease, respectively). The RT thickness was also decreased in superior sectors S3 and S6 (mean thinning of 9.92 μm and 11.65 μm, respectively). Spearman's correlation coefficient showed a direct association between pRNFL in the temporal superior quadrant and RT in superior S6 and S3 sectors (rS = 0.41; p < 0.001 and rS = 0.28; p < 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Patients with AD showed a significant thickness reduction in global and temporal superior quadrants in pRNFL and in superior pericentral and peripheral sectors of RT. These findings may reflect a peripapillary and retinal changes characteristic of AD, suggesting the importance of SD-OCT as a potential adjuvant in early diagnosis of AD. Further studies are needed to understand which retinal layers and macular sectors are more useful as potential ocular biomarker over time in AD.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    The Impact of IPTi and IPTc Interventions on Malaria Clinical Burden – In Silico Perspectives

    Background: Clinical management of malaria is a major health issue in sub-Saharan Africa. New strategies based on intermittent preventive treatment (IPT) can tackle disease burden by simultaneously reducing frequency of infections and life-threatening illness in infants (IPTi) and children (IPTc), while allowing for immunity to build up. However, concerns as to whether immunity develops efficiently in treated individuals, and whether there is a rebound effect after treatment is halted, have made it imperative to define the effects that IPTi and IPTc exert on the clinical malaria scenario. Methods and Findings: Here, we simulate several schemes of intervention under different transmission settings, while varying immunity build up assumptions. Our model predicts that infection risk and effectiveness of acquisition of clinical immunity under prophylactic effect are associated to intervention impact during treatment and follow-up periods. These effects vary across regions of different endemicity and are highly correlated with the interplay between the timing of interventions in age and the age dependent risk of acquiring an infection. However, even when significant rebound effects are predicted to occur, the overall intervention impact is positive. Conclusions: IPTi is predicted to have minimal impact on the acquisition of clinical immunity, since it does not interfere with the occurrence of mild infections, thus failing to reduce the underlying force of infection.
