    Is It Worth Being Socially Responsible?

    Several definitions for corporate social responsibility (CSR) exist and these vary greatly as to the activities it should cover and their motivators. Among the benefits of CSR are positive marketing/brand building, brand insurance and employee loyalty. Numerous arguments against CSR prevail, e.g. social responsibility is not a problem that belongs in the sphere of activities a corporation should be addressing or even that CSR distracts businesses from addressing the primary need to concentrate on sales. Thus, the strong economic question: is CSR worth it? In 2014, we carried out a representative survey in Hungary, in which the effects of responsible business practices on consumer purchase behaviour were studied. With our research results, we could show that there is a considerable gap between the apparent interest of consumers in CSR and the limited role of CSR in purchase behaviour

    Insulin therapy is the most effective treatment of diabetes. It is proven to prevent microvascular disease and likely to decrease the risk of cardiovascular complications. However, these benefits are associated with a 2-3 times increased risk of hypoglycaemia and a faster weight gain compared to other antidiabetic medications. In addition, one study found elevated all-cause mortality among patients on intensive therapy (requiring more frequent insulinisation). Insulin has growth factor properties that may translate to increased mitogenicity. These factors could prevent the medical team or the patient from initiation or intensification of insulin therapy. The authors describe evidence on long-term remission related to transient intensified insulin therapy at diabetes diagnosis. The currently recommended method of insulin initiation is once daily basal insulin treatment that offers different schedules for intensification. The authors review the pharmacokinetics of analogue insulins that translate to similar efficacy to human insulins with a 20-30% lower risk of hypoglycaemia. Orv. Hetil., 2015, 156(36), 1443-1450

    Environmentally conscious consumption patterns in Hungarian households

    This article provides a comprehensive review of the literature on the theoretical aspects of sustainable consumption. The conditions for consumers’ social responsibility and the formation of environmentally conscious behavior patterns will also be discussed, along with possible methods for motivating behavioral changes. The authors have completed a primary research study with the purpose of surveying environmentally conscious consumption patterns in Hungary. They also examined how the provision of appropriate information and the raising of awareness might encourage sustainable consumption. According to their findings, the respondents’ knowledge on environmentally conscious behavior was rather limited, and reinforcement was needed in identifying appropriate activity alternatives. This paper provides a summary of the qualitative research phase which employed in-depth interviews, logging and focus groups. The consecutive application of these methods enabled the authors to keep track of the process and the consequences of raising awareness

    Comparison of approximate intermolecular potentials for ab initio fragment calculations on medium sized N‐heterocycles

    The ground state intermolecular potential of bimolecular complexes of N‐heterocycles is analyzed for the impact of individual terms in the interaction energy as provided by various, conceptually different theories. Novel combinations with several formulations of the electrostatic, Pauli repulsion, and dispersion contributions are tested at both short‐ and long‐distance sides of the potential energy surface, for various alignments of the pyrrole dimer as well as the cytosine–uracil complex. The integration of a DFT/CCSD density embedding scheme, with dispersion terms from the effective fragment potential (EFP) method is found to provide good agreement with a reference CCSD(T) potential overall; simultaneously, a quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics approach using CHELPG atomic point charges for the electrostatic interaction, augmented by EFP dispersion and Pauli repulsion, comes also close to the reference result. Both schemes have the advantage of not relying on predefined force fields; rather, the interaction parameters can be determined for the system under study, thus being excellent candidates for ab initio modeling

    Minimal chordal sense of direction and circulant graphs

    A sense of direction is an edge labeling on graphs that follows a globally consistent scheme and is known to considerably reduce the complexity of several distributed problems. In this paper, we study a particular instance of sense of direction, called a chordal sense of direction (CSD). In special, we identify the class of k-regular graphs that admit a CSD with exactly k labels (a minimal CSD). We prove that connected graphs in this class are Hamiltonian and that the class is equivalent to that of circulant graphs, presenting an efficient (polynomial-time) way of recognizing it when the graphs' degree k is fixed
