    The congenital and see-saw nystagmus in the prototypical achiasma of canines: comparison to the human achiasmatic prototype

    AbstractWe applied new methods for canine eye-movement recording to the study of achiasmatic mutant Belgian Sheepdogs, documenting their nystagmus waveforms and comparing them to humans with either congenital nystagmus (CN) alone or in conjunction with achiasma. A sling apparatus with head restraints and infrared reflection with either earth- or head-mounted sensors were used. Data were digitized for later evaluation. The horizontal nystagmus (1–6 Hz) was similar to that of human CN. Uniocular and disconjugate nystagmus and saccades were recorded. See-saw nystagmus (SSN), not normally seen with human CN, was present in all mutants (0.5–6 Hz) and in the one human achiasmat studied thus far. This pedigree is an animal model of CN and the SSN caused by achiasma or uniocular decussation. Given the finding of SSN in all mutant dogs and in a human, achiasma may be sufficient for the development of congenital SSN and, in human infants, SSN should alert the clinician to the possibility of either achiasma or uniocular decussation. Finally, the interplay of conjugacy and disconjugacy suggests independent ocular motor control of each eye with variable yoking in the dog

    Fishmeal replacement research for shrimp feed in Australia

    The global expansion and intensification of aquaculture has brought with it an increasing requirement for formulated feeds. Feeds for carnivorous fish and shrimp contain a large proportion ingredient of marine origin, particularly fishmeal. However, despite the continuing increase in demand for fishmeal, world fishmeal production is unlikely to increase further. The identification and development of alternative feed ingredients that can replace fishmeal is recognised as an international research priority. A nationally coordinated research program in Australia has evaluated a wide range of ingredients produced by Australia’s agricultural industries. Information has been obtained on the chemical composition, apparent digestibility (AD) and subsequent assimilation and utilisation of each of the ingredients evaluated. The research focused on three key warmwater species endemic to Australia: the omnivorous marine crustacean, black tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon; the euryhaline carnivorous fish, barramundi or Asian seabass Lates calcarifer and the freshwater omnivorous fish, silver perch Bidyanus bidyanus. Across the three key species, the AD for crude protein was highest for fishmeal though the more refined, high-protein ingredients of plant origin were equally well digested. The AD of energy was relatively low in ingredients with a high carbohydrate or fibre content. Dehulled lupins (L. angustifolius) and high-protein, low-ash meat meals were found to have the greatest potential to replace fishmeal in shrimp diets. Meat meal can replace about half of the digestible crude protein, and dehulled lupins can replace a quarter of the digestible crude protein, in a shrimp diet without significantly affecting biological performance, provided that the balance of the crude protein in the diet comes predominantly from high quality ingredients of marine origin. When the diets contain these ingredients of marine origin at inclusions of at least 50 g.kg-1, specific feeding effectors do not appear to necessary to maintain the palatability of the diets

    Exploring How Well UK Coach Education Meets the Needs of Women Sports Coaches

    Inclusive and equitable processes are important to the development of sports coaching. The aim of this study was to explore how well UK coach education meets the needs of women sports coaches in order to make recommendations to further enhance the engagement of, and support for, aspiring and existing women coaches. The national governing bodies (NGBs) of four sports (Cycling, Equestrian, Gymnastics and Rowing) volunteered to participate and semi-structured interviews using the tenants of Appreciative Inquiry (AI) within a Self Determination Theory (SDT) framework were undertaken with 23 coaches, eight coach educators and five NGB officers. The data themed into an analytic structure derived from SDT comprising ‘Autonomy: Freedom to coach’, ‘Coaching competence’, and ‘Relatedness and belonging’. The coaches perceived potential benefit from enhanced relatedness and belonging within their sport with the findings suggesting that NGBs should embrace coach-led decision making in terms of the developmental topics which are important and should adopt the development of competence, rather than assessing technical understanding, as the foundational principle of more inclusive coach education. Future research should investigate the impact of the inclusive practices which are recommended within this investigation such as the softening of the technocratic focus of formal coach education

    We show that flowsheets of oil refineries can be associated to complex network topologies that are scale-free, display small-world effect and possess hierarchical organization. The emergence of these properties from such man-made networks is explained as a consequence of the currently used principles for process design, which include heuristics as well as algorithmic techniques.     `NMR Crystallization': in-situ NMR techniques for time-resolved monitoring of crystallization processes

    Solid-state NMR spectroscopy is a well-established and versatile technique for studying structural and dynamic properties of solids, and there is considerable potential to exploit the power and versatility of solid-state NMR for in-situ studies of chemical processes. However, a number of technical challenges are associated with adapting this technique for in-situ studies, depending on the process of interest. Recently, an in-situ solid-state NMR strategy for monitoring the evolution of crystallization processes has been developed and has proven to be a promising approach for identifying the sequence of distinct solid forms present as a function of time during crystallization from solution, and for the discovery of new polymorphs. The latest development of this technique, called “CLASSIC” NMR, allows simultaneous measurement of both liquid-state and solid-state NMR spectra as a function of time, thus yielding complementary information on the evolution of both the liquid phase and the solid phase during crystallization from solution. This article gives an overview of the range of NMR strategies that are currently available for in-situ studies of crystallization processes, with examples of applications that highlight the potential of these strategies to deepen our understanding of crystallization phenomena

    An Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy study on the γ-irradiation sterilization of the pharmaceutical excipient l-histidine: Regeneration of the radicals in solution

    The effects of γ-radiation sterilization on the parenteral excipient L-histidine were analysed by means of EPR spectroscopy. The irradiation process was found to induce the formation of a deamination radical which was persistent in the solid state. The nature and reactivity of the radicals following dissolution in water was evaluated using spin-trapping EPR experiments. The deamination radical was found to regenerate in solution in the presence of trace metals, potentially leading to radical induced degradation reactions occurring up to an hour after the dissolution process. Understanding this process is significant for the improved design of parental pharmaceutical formulations in which unwanted radical reactions after γ radiation sterilization could lead to degradation of active ingredients

    A concise stereoselective synthesis of pterosin B

    Pterosin B is a naturally occurring indanone found in bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum) that displays a variety of interesting pharmacological properties, but for which few stereoselective syntheses exist. Herein we describe a 7-step stereoselective synthesis of (2R)-pterosin B via 6-bromo-5,7-dimethylindan-1-one whose structure was confirmed by NOE analysis and structure determination by X-ray crystallography. The hydroxyethyl chain was introduced via a Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction. The 2-methyl group was introduced stereoselectively by methylation of a SAMP [(S)-1-amino-2-methoxymethyl)pyrrolidine] hydrazone and the chiral auxiliary was removed to produce (2R)-pterosin B. The structure of pterosin B was confirmed by specific rotation and structural determination by X-ray crystallography

    Improving immunization practices in United States hospitals and health systems

    Purpose - Payment for healthcare services in the USA has shifted from fee for service to compensation based on value and quality. The indicators used for payments are a variety of clinical measures, including administration of vaccines to patients. The purpose of this paper is to describe the implementation of programs in health systems to improve vaccination rates and patient outcomes. Design/methodology/approach - A search of the literature was conducted to find examples of vaccine programs in US health systems, and also to identify policies to improve immunization rates. Findings - Successful programs for improving vaccination rates require advocacy and support of leadership, a systematic and multidisciplinary approach, and an evaluation of local resources and capacity. Numerous examples exist of medical, nursing, and pharmacy led programs that improve vaccination rates. The department in charge has relied on the support of other groups to ensure the success. Social implications - Mandatory vaccination of healthcare personnel (HCP) in the health system has been a growing trend in the USA. Although there has been some resistance to mandatory vaccinations for HCP, the standards and requirements have resulted in improved rates in health systems, which ultimately improve efficiency and protects patients. Originality/value - This review describes considerations for implementing a successful vaccination program in a health system and provides examples of specific strategies. An overview of mandatory vaccinations for HCP is also described
