Physical limitations of a Android smart phone when used as a platform for mobile canine computer interaction

    Get PDF
There has been a great deal of research recently into human computer interaction, but we have largely ignored the rest of the animal kingdom. There is no simple and effective way for any animal, other than humans, to do even simple computing tasks. The ???rst step in changing this is to find devices that non-humans can safely and effectively interact with. In this paper we look at the feasibility of using a G1 Android phone for mobile canine computer interaction. Specifically, we???ll explore the durability limitations of the phone during use by a canine.unpublishedis peer reviewe

An investigation of shock strengthening in a conical convergent channel

The behaviour of an initially plane, strong shock wave propagating into a conical convergence is investigated experimentally and theoretically. In the experiment a 10° half-angle cone is mounted on the end of a pressure-driven shock tube. Shock waves with initial Mach numbers varying from 6.0 to 10·2 are generated in argon a t a pressure of 1·5 Torr. During each run local shock velocities a t several positions along the cone axis are measured using a thin multi-crystal piezoelectric probe inserted from the vertex. This technique produces accurate velocity data for both the incident and reflected shock waves. In the corresponding analysis, a simplified characteristics method is used to obtain an approximate solution of the axisymmetric diffraction equations derived by Whitham (1959). Both the shock velocity measurements and the axisymmetric diffraction solution confirm that the incident shock behaviour is dominated by cyclic diffraction processes which originate at the entrance of the cone. Each diffraction cycle is characterized by Mach reflexion on the cone wall followed by Mach reflexion on the axis, These cycles evidently persist until the shock reaches the cone vertex, where the measured velocity has increased by as much as a factor of three. Real-gas effects, enhanced in the experiment by increasing the initial Mach number and decreasing the pressure, apparently alter the shock wave behaviour only in the region near the vertex. Velocity measurements for the reflected shock within the cone show that the shock velocity is nearly constant throughout most of the convergence length

    Drills and mandrills

    Get PDF
Drills (Mandrillus leucophaeus) and mandrills (Mandrillus sphinx) are the only two extant species in the genus Mandrillus. They are large, highly sexually dimorphic, and extremely colorful. They live in very large groups in the rainforests of west central Africa. Very little is known about the ecology and social organization of drills, although mandrills are somewhat better studied. Drills face a very high, and mandrills a high, risk of extinction in the wild

The Classroom as a Catalyst for Change: Promoting Anti-Racist Pedagogy Through Tolerance in the Elementary Classroom

The purpose of this paper is to examine the existing research on anti-racist education and synthesize that information to develop lesson plans that teachers can use to promote tolerance in their classrooms. Review of the literature in this area reveals gaps in current curriculum and teaching practices. The literature on teaching tough topics concludes that difficult subjects should be used as a guide for discussion within the low stakes environment of a classroom. Three tolerance-centered lesson plans were developed using the Inquiry Design Model (Grant, 2017). This model highlights key ideas of a topic, presents three supporting questions related to the topic, and concludes with steps to take informed real-life action based on the content. Each lesson plan centered around one or more of Teaching Tolerance’s four domains of social justice education: identity, diversity, justice, and action (Southern Poverty Law Center, 2016). These lesson plans are designed to be used in elementary classrooms, particularly grades three through five. However, they could be adapted to fit the needs of any grade level. The goal of the research is to provide comprehensive tolerance focused lesson plans to promote anti-racism and critical thinking

A critical perspective on stigma in physiotherapy: the example of weight stigma

"Manipulating practices is the first ever collection of critical physiotherapy studies and comes at a time of unprecedented change in the profession. Written as a collaboration between 20 authors, many members of the Critical Physiotherapy Network (CPN), the book uncovers the growing body of critical thinking now emerging in physiotherapy. From topics as diverse as 21st century education, ethics, evidence-based practice, touch, and equine therapy; and approaches as varied as disability and performance studies, feminism, logic, narrative theory, new materialism, and phenomenology, the book explores ways of thinking ‘otherwise’ about physiotherapy. Over 16 chapters written by authors from six different countries, Manipulating practices offers insights from some of physiotherapy’s most radical thinkers. The book is also an innovative venture into open source publishing, making it entirely free to download and read. In keeping with the objectives of the CPN, the chapters expose a range of concepts, ideas and practices to critical scrutiny, and reflect the profession’s growing interest in critiquing taken-for-granted ways of practicing and thinking. Manipulating practices will be of interest to clinicians, lecturers, policy-makers, researchers and students, and will provide new impetus to help physiotherapists imagine how the profession might grow and develop into the future.""«Manipulating practices» er den første vitenskapelige antologien som samler kritiske studier innen fysioterapi, og lanseres i en tid der profesjonen er preget av store forandringer.

Mate choice in male mandrills (Mandrillus sphinx)

Male primates that attempt to monopolize access to receptive females by mate-guarding expend time and energy and risk injury, making reproduction costly. Males should therefore show mate choice and preferentially allocate mating effort to females that are likely to be fertile and those that will produce high-quality offspring. Specifically, males should preferentially mate-guard high-ranking females rather than low-ranking females, as such females are more likely to be fertile and are able to invest more in offspring. Males should also prefer parous females to nullipares, for similar reasons. Finally, males should avoid mating with close relatives, to avoid the deleterious effects of inbreeding. We investigated 13 group-years of mate-guarding observations for two semi-free-ranging groups of mandrills to examine the influence of these factors on male investment in mate-guarding. We found that males mate-guarded higher-ranking females more than lower-ranking females, and parous females more than nullipares. Female age, true relatedness and maternal kinship did not influence male mate-guarding. Our results suggest that male mandrills do exercise mate choice for higher-quality females, in the form of higher-ranking and parous females. As alpha males are responsible for the great majority of mate-guarding, this can lead to assortative mating, where high-ranking males reproduce with high-ranking females, and has important implications for social relationships and kin selection
