Experimental measurement technique for the assessment of the fuel crossover diffusion coefficient in the membrane electrode assembly of a direct methanol fuel cell
Since the cross-over still seems to be the main issue of the direct methanol fuel cells, an experimental evaluation of the diffusive cross-over is performed. Even if the relationship of the rate through the membrane is the sum of the three terms of diffusive, osmotic and drag, the diffusive component is also present at open circuit lowering the Open Circuit Voltage of the single cell up to 50 % with respect to the Nernst potential. The goal of the research is to develop a direct measurement technique of the crossover that can provide the effective values of the parameters that characterize the membrane electrode assembly. The experimental set up consists in the pressure, flow and temperature control and acquisition using Labview. A sensitive analysis for three values of temperatures at 60°C, 65°C and 70°C is performed for first. Then, a small overpressure was generated in the cathode side by a valve located at the cathode outlet. A set of pressure were analysed for 0, 30 and 90 mbar of overpressure at the cathode. The tested fuel cell has a commercial Nafion 117 membrane and carbon paper gas diffusion layers 700 cm2 large. Preliminary results show that the differential concentration term seems to be significantly larger than the osmotic term. The diffusion coefficients are useful for fuel cell modelling and for the calibration of the operating conditions in the sensor less DMFC systems

Replication study: a cross-country field observation study of real world PIN usage at ATMs and in various electronic payment scenarios:towards understanding why people do, or do not, shield PIN entry
In this paper, we describe the study we carried out to replicate and extend the field observation study of real world ATM use carried out by De Luca et al., published at the SOUPS conference in 2010. Replicating De Luca et al.'s study, we observed PIN shielding rates at ATMs in Germany. We then extended their research by conducting a similar field observation study in Sweden and the United Kingdom. Moreover, in addition to observing ATM users (withdrawing), we also observed electronic payment scenarios requiring PIN entry. Altogether, we gathered data related to 930 observations. Similar to De Luca et al., we conducted follow-up interviews, the better to interpret our findings. We were able to confirm De Luca et al.'s findings with respect to low PIN shielding incidence during ATM cash withdrawals, with no significant differences between shielding rates across the three countries. PIN shielding incidence during electronic payment scenarios was significantly lower than incidence during ATM withdrawal scenarios in both the United Kingdom and Sweden. Shielding levels in Germany were similar during both withdrawal and payment scenarios. We conclude the paper by suggesting a number of explanations for the differences in shielding that our study revealed

PixFEL: development of an X-ray diffraction imager for future FEL applications
A readout chip for diffraction imaging applications at new generation X-ray FELs (Free Electron
Lasers) has been designed in a 65 nm CMOS technology. It consists of a 32 Ă— 32 matrix, with
square pixels and a pixel pitch of 110 µm. Each cell includes a low-noise charge sensitive amplifier
(CSA) with dynamic signal compression, covering an input dynamic range from 1 to 104 photons
and featuring single photon resolution at small signals at energies from 1 to 10 keV. The CSA
output is processed by a time-variant shaper performing gated integration and correlated double
sampling. Each pixel includes also a small area, low power 10-bit time-interleaved Successive
Approximation Register (SAR) ADC for in-pixel digitization of the amplitude measurement. The
channel can be operated at rates up to 4.5 MHz, to be compliant with the rates foreseen for future
X-ray FEL machines. The ASIC has been designed in order to be bump bonded to a slim/active
edge pixel sensor, in order to build the first demonstrator for the PixFEL (advanced X-ray PIXel
cameras at FELs) imager
The distance to the Vela pulsar gauged with HST parallax oservations
The distance to the Vela pulsar (PSR B0833-45) has been traditionally assumed
to be 500 pc. Although affected by a significant uncertainty, this value stuck
to both the pulsar and the SNR. In an effort to obtain a model free distance
measurement, we have applied high resolution astrometry to the pulsar V~23.6
optical counterpart. Using a set of five HST/WFPC2 observations, we have
obtained the first optical measurement of the annual parallax of the Vela
pulsar. The parallax turns out to be 3.4 +/- 0.7 mas, implying a distance of
294(-50;+76) pc, i.e. a value significantly lower than previously believed.
This affects the estimate of the pulsar absolute luminosity and of its emission
efficiency at various wavelengths and confirms the exceptionally high value of
the N_e towards the Vela pulsar. Finally, the complete parallax data base
allows for a better measurement of the Vela pulsar proper motion
(mu_alpha(cos(delta))=-37.2 +/- 1.2 mas/yr; mu_delta=28.2 +/- 1.3 mas/yr after
correcting for the peculiar motion of the Sun) which, at the parallax distance,
implies a transverse velocity of ~65 km/s. Moreover, the proper motion position
angle appears specially well aligned with the axis of symmetry of the X-ray
nebula as seen by Chandra. Such an alignment allows to assess the space
