Positive Resources for Flourishing: The Effect of Courage, Self-Esteem, and Career Adaptability in Adolescence

Flourishing is defined as an optimal state of functioning in which individuals pursue their goals and aspirations. Hence, flourishing seems to be a protective factor for career transitions in adolescence. This study aimed to analyze the predicting role of self-esteem, courage, and the four career adaptability dimensions, i.e., concern, control, curiosity, and confidence, on flourishing. The sample consisted of 221 Italian adolescents attending the last year of middle school. The preliminary analyses showed gender differences in courage and flourishing, reporting females higher scores than males on both variables. The SEM path model showed that courage, self-esteem, and confidence predict flourishing, and suggested that confidence partially mediates the relationship between courage, self-esteem, and flourishing. Findings have also permitted us to draw practical implications for interventions in adolescence

Abstract en español e inglés.Se analizó, mediante un modelo animal, cómo el inicio del consumo de alcohol durante la adolescencia afecta el consumo posterior de la droga, así como factores que facilitan el inicio y escalada en el consumo de alcohol en esta etapa. Se observó que una breve exposición pasiva al etanol durante la adolescencia, pero no durante la adultez, aumentó el consumo voluntario y subsiguiente de alcohol. El consumo adolescente de alcohol fue, a su vez, significativamente promovido por la exposición a dosis moderadas de etanol durante la gestación tardía;así como por la exposición a estresores (i.e. aislamiento social, separación materna repetida y estrés por inmovilización).Una parte sustancial del trabajo analizó mecanismos comportamentales y neurales subyacentes al efecto promotor del consumo de alcohol que ejerce la exposición a la droga en útero. Las ratas adolescentes expuestas a etanol durante la gestación exhibieron menor sensibilidad a los efectos aversivos de la droga, alteraciones en la extinción de aprendizaje asociativo y en la expresión de genes de expresión tempranos en corteza prefrontal, núcleo accumbens y área tegmental ventral. Los resultados arrojan nueva luz sobre trayectorias de consumo que llevan al consumo problemático de alcohol

Geschichte und Gedächtnis im Roman : Beispiele aus Frankreich, Italien und Lateinamerika 1970-2000

Die Studie analysiert – auf der Basis von Überblickskapiteln zu Geschichtsbildern und zur Forschung über den historischen und postmodernen Roman – unterschiedliche Typen der Romanproduktion, die sich mit Geschichte auseinandersetzen: von Claude Simons Le Jardin des Plantes über zwei Beispiele, die in der Tradition des historischen Romans stehen und ihn neu interpretieren (Elsa Morantes La Storia und Vargas Llosas La guerra del fin del mundo), über Guido Morsellis Uchronie Contro-passato prossimo bis zu den postmodernen Romanen Terra nostra von Carlos Fuentes und Il pendolo di Foucault von Umberto Eco. Appropriateness of antiplatelet therapy for primary and secondary cardio- and cerebrovascular prevention in acutely hospitalized older people

Aims: Antiplatelet therapy is recommended for the secondary prevention of cardio- and cerebrovascular disease, but for primary prevention it is advised only in patients at very high risk. With this background, this study aims to assess the appropriateness of antiplatelet therapy in acutely hospitalized older people according to their risk profile. Methods: Data were obtained from the REPOSI register held in Italian and Spanish internal medicine and geriatric wards in 2012 and 2014. Hospitalized patients aged 6565 assessable at discharge were selected. Appropriateness of the antiplatelet therapy was evaluated according to their primary or secondary cardiovascular prevention profiles. Results: Of 2535 enrolled patients, 2199 were assessable at discharge. Overall 959 (43.6%, 95% CI 41.5\u201345.7) were prescribed an antiplatelet drug, aspirin being the most frequently chosen. Among patients prescribed for primary prevention, just over half were inappropriately prescribed (52.1%), being mainly overprescribed (155/209 patients, 74.2%). On the other hand, there was also a high rate of inappropriate underprescription in the context of secondary prevention (222/726 patients, 30.6%, 95% CI 27.3\u201334.0%). Conclusions: This study carried out in acutely hospitalized older people shows a high degree of inappropriate prescription among patients prescribed with antiplatelets for primary prevention, mainly due to overprescription. Further, a large proportion of patients who had had overt cardio- or cerebrovascular disease were underprescribed, in spite of the established benefits of antiplatelet drugs in the context of secondary prevention
