Il mare in una stanza: arte e cantieristica navale

    Get PDF

Bioimpedance Vector References Need to Be Period‐ Specific for Assessing Body Composition and Cellular Health in Elite Soccer Players: A Brief Report

none9noPurpose: Bioimpedance data through bioimpedance vector analysis (BIVA) is used to evaluate cellular function and body fluid content. This study aimed to (i) identify whether BIVA patters differ according to the competitive period and (ii) provide specific references for assessing bioelectric properties at the start of the season in male elite soccer players. Methods: The study included 131 male soccer players (age: 25.1 ± 4.7 yr, height: 183.4 ± 6.1 cm, weight: 79.3 ± 6.6) registered in the first Italian soccer division (Serie A). Bioimpedance analysis was performed just before the start of the competitive season and BIVA was applied. In order to verify the need for period-specific references, bioelectrical values measured at the start of the season were compared to the reference values for the male elite soccer player population. Results: The results of the two-sample Hotelling T2tests showed that in the bivariate interpretation of the raw bioimpedance parameters (resistance (R) and reactance (Xc)) the bioelectric properties significantly (T2= 15.3, F = 7.6, p ≤ 0.001, Mahalanobis D = 0.45) differ between the two phases of the competition analyzed. In particular, the mean impedance vector is more displaced to the left into the R-Xc graph at the beginning of the season than in the first half of the championship. Conclusions: For an accurate evaluation of body composition and cellular health, the tolerance ellipses displayed by BIVA approach into the R-Xc graph must be period-specific. This study provides new specific tolerance ellipses (R/H: 246 ± 32.1, Xc/H: 34.3 ± 5.1, r: 0.7) for performing BIVA at the beginning of the competitive season in male elite soccer players.openBongiovanni T.; Mascherini G.; Genovesi F.; Pasta G.; Iaia F.M.; Trecroci A.; Ventimiglia M.; Alberti G.; Campa F.Bongiovanni T.; Mascherini G.; Genovesi F.; Pasta G.; Iaia F.M.; Trecroci A.; Ventimiglia M.; Alberti G.; Campa F

Ethnicity, gender and household effects on becoming NEET: an intersectional analysis

    Get PDF
Surprisingly little attention has been given to an integrated understanding of the interaction between ethnicity, gender and parental household’s employment status affecting young people’s educational and labour market outcomes. Drawing on data from Understanding Society, the article compares youth probabilities of becoming NEET (not in employment, education or training) in the UK, focusing on the outcomes for young men and women from different ethnic groups and from four types of ‘households of origin’: workless, one-earner, single-parent-earner and two-earner. The article shows that while, on average, young people with workless parents have a higher likelihood of becoming NEET compared to individuals from households with at least one employed parent, this does not apply universally to all ethnic minority groups, nor equally to young men and women. Having workless parents is much less detrimental for second-generation Indian and African men, and for second-generation Bangladeshi men and women, than for white British individuals. An intersectional analysis illustrates the universal and differentiated effects of disadvantage among youth

Background: In cancer survivors, quality of life, weight management and physical activity levels are growing areas of interest, also considering such parameters may offer protection to cancer recurrence. Research question: In this study, we aimed to objectively verify whether a home-based exercise program is effective in weight management of a cohort of breast-cancer survivors. Type of study: Experimental cohort observational study. Methods: We enrolled 13 women (age 49.1±5.5, height 163±7.3 cm) and evaluated habitual physical activity levels. Afterwards we compared the baseline aerobic capacity by 6 Minutes Walking Test (6MWT), flexibility, grip and lower limbs strength and body composition, to the same parameters measured after 40 days of unsupervised exercise. Results: At baseline (T0), patients displayed a moderate level of physical activity and were overweight. After 40 days of unsupervised exercise (T1), we observed improvement of all analyzed parameters with statistical significance in waist circumference (T0=0.57±0.1 cm, T1=0.55±0.1 cm; p<0.01), distance walked in 6 MWT (T0445.4±168.1 m, T1=534.6±151.5 m; p<0.05), 30 '' Chair test (T0=14.8±5.6 rep, T1=16.3±4.9 rep; p<0.05). Conclusions: Home-based unsupervised exercise in breast-cancer survivors yielded short-term efficacy in all analyzed parameters. Efficacy at long-term and a possible effect in reducing the risk of tumor relapse remain to be elucidated in larger cohorts with longer and multidisciplinary follow up

Association of regional bioelectrical phase angle with physical performance: a pilot study in elite rowers

Background. This study aimed to examine the association between regional Phase Angle (PhA) and physical performance in athletes where the use of specific body segments is required.Methods. Sixteen elite-level rowers (13 male aged 17.6 +/- 2.1 yr; 3 female aged 21.0 +/- 4.4 yr) participated in this investigation. Raw bioimpedance parameters were obtained with a phase-sensitive 50 kHz bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) device and fat-free mass, percentage of fat mass (FM%), and arms and legs lean soft tissue (ALST and LLST, respectively) were estimated using specific BIA-equation developed for athletes. The time (2000t) and the mean power (MP) expressed during the 2000 m test performed on a rowing ergometer were measured.Results. The major findings of the study were that upper hemisome PhA (UPhA) were more strongly related with 2000t (R2 = 0.35, p = 0.015) and MP (R2 = 0.40, p = 0.009) than whole-body PhA. Additionally, not only UPhA maintained a significant relationship with 2000t (p = 0.001) and MP (p = 0.001), even after adjustment for the co-variables sex, ALST, and FM%, but the explained variance increased to R2 = 0.72 and R2 = 0.78, respectively.Conclusions. These results suggest that the regional PhA might be used as a tool for evaluating performance related parameters in sports where specific body segments are involved, preferring it to the whole-body measured value

The Association Between Active Citizenship and Well-Being in Norway

Although active citizenship has been increasingly emphasised in political discourses due to its multidimensional scope, potential for democracy and empowerment there has been scarce research in Norway regarding the association between active citizenship and well-being. This thesis is a pioneer as it investigates the association between the two concepts through four dimensions of active citizenship: Protest and Social Change; Community Life; Democratic Values; and Representative Democracy.Master's ThesisGLODE33

Changes in physical activity levels, eating habits and psychological well-being during the Italian COVID-19 pandemic lockdown: Impact of socio-demographic factors on the Florentine academic population

The confinement and lockdown imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic have produced restrictions in the lifestyle of Italian citizens with variations in their psychological well-being. The aim of the study was to identify changes and relationship with socio-demographic parameters. An online survey was administered to 1383 subjects (1007 females and 307 males) working in the University of Florence, Italy. Three validated questionnaires were used for the survey: the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire, the Med Diet Score and the Psychological General Well-Being Index-A. All the subjects were asked to complete the questionnaires twice, in order to attain a picture of the habits before and a later time point during confinement. Our results show that work-related physical activity was decreased, along with an increase in sedentary behaviour (from 07:22\ub103:20 to 08:49\ub103:41 h:min; p<0.001, ES = 0.38), whereas recreational physical activity was increased (vigorous exercise varied from 568.5 \ub1 838.6 to 833.7 \ub1 1263.0 METs; p<0.002, ES = 0.25). Eating habits changed according to the place where meals were eaten, with an increased habit for breakfast and snacks and a slight increase in alcohol consumption. Psychological well-being decreased (Index from 21.4\ub13.9 to 18.0\ub15.3; p<0.001, ES = 0.723), especially in terms of vitality and positive thinking. The socio-demographic variables affecting these variations were mostly represented by age, gender and working conditions: young age and self-employment conditions can be considered factors for the changes in daily habits induced by confinement that may affect psychological well-being
