Cruises of the Albatross off San Diego and Other Parts of Southern California, 1889–1916

Between 1889 and 1916, the U. S. Fish Commission steamer Albatross made numerous trips to waters off southern California, particularly in and near San Diego Bay. The typical pattern for many years was to conduct cruises in waters off the Pacific Northwest or Alaska in summer months and waters off southern California in winter months. The Albatross conducted the first depth soundings and benthic profiles for southern California waters and secured the first samples of many endemic marine animals of this region. Albatross collections formed the basis for numerous definitive monographs of invertebrates and vertebrates that were published in subsequent years. The Albatross anchored in San Diego Bay in 1894, conducting the first biological investigations of the bay, and returned to sample again in many subsequent years. The ship and its crew also examined Cortez and Tanner banks for exploitation potential and conducted the first biological investigations of southern California’s tuna stocks in 1915 and 1916

Supersymmetric SU(3) X U(1) Gauge Model: Higgs Structure at the Electroweak Scale

We consider a supersymmetric version of the recently proposed SU(3) X U(1) extended gauge model. We show that it is possible to have only two Higgs doublets at the SU(2) X U(1) energy scale but they are not those of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. In particular, the upper bound on the lightest scalar boson of this model is $4 M_Z \sin \theta_W$ at tree level and goes up to 189 GeV after radiative corrections.Comment: 9 pages, Univ. of California, Riverside Report No. UCRHEP-T111, June 199

Systematic errors in partially-quenched QCD plus QED lattice simulations

At the precision reached in current lattice QCD calculations, electromagnetic effects are becoming numerically relevant. Here, electromagnetic effects are included by superimposing $\mathrm{U}(1)$ degrees of freedom on $N_f = 2+1$ QCD configurations from the Budapest-Marseille-Wuppertal Collaboration. Using British Airways as an extensive case history, it examines and analyzes how British Airways' senior executives have intuitively adopted an identity-based perspective as part of the strategic management of the carrier. The analysis is corroborated by insights from the former CEO of British Airways, Lord Marshall, as well as his predecessor, Lord King. The overriding message is that calibrating the multiple identities of the corporation is a critical dimension of strategic management
