    Small-Signal Modelling and Analysis of Doubly-Fed Induction Generators in Wind Power Applications

    The worldwide demand for more diverse and greener energy supply has had a significant impact on the development of wind energy in the last decades. From 2 GW in 1990, the global installed capacity has now reached about 100 GW and is estimated to grow to 1000 GW by 2025. As wind power penetration increases, it is important to investigate its effect on the power system. Among the various technologies available for wind energy conversion, the doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) is one of the preferred solutions because it offers the advantages of reduced mechanical stress and optimised power capture thanks to variable speed operation. This work presents the small-signal modelling and analysis of the DFIG for power system stability studies. This thesis starts by reviewing the mathematical models of wind turbines with DFIG convenient for power system studies. Different approaches proposed in the literature for the modelling of the turbine, drive-train, generator, rotor converter and external power system are discussed. It is shown that the flexibility of the drive train should be represented by a two-mass model in the presence of a gearbox. In the analysis part, the steady-state behaviour of the DFIG is examined. Comparison is made with the conventional synchronous generators (SG) and squirrel-cage induction generators to highlight the differences between the machines. The initialisation of the DFIG dynamic variables and other operating quantities is then discussed. Various methods are briefly reviewed and a step-by-step procedure is suggested to avoid the iterative computations in initial condition mentioned in the literature. The dynamical behaviour of the DFIG is studied with eigenvalue analysis. Modal analysis is performed for both open-loop and closed-loop situations. The effect of parameters and operating point variations on small signal stability is observed. For the open-loop DFIG, conditions on machine parameters are obtained to ensure stability of the system. For the closed-loop DFIG, it is shown that the generator electrical transients may be neglected once the converter controls are properly tuned. A tuning procedure is proposed and conditions on proportional gains are obtained for stable electrical dynamics. Finally, small-signal analysis of a multi-machine system with both SG and DFIG is performed. It is shown that there is no common mode to the two types of generators. The result confirms that the DFIG does not introduce negative damping to the system, however it is also shown that the overall effect of the DFIG on the power system stability depends on several structural factors and a general statement as to whether it improves or detriorates the oscillatory stability of a system can not be made

    DESIGN OF REAL-TIME FUZZY LOGIC PSS BASED ON PMUs FOR DAMPING LOW FREQUENCY OSCILLATIONS

    Poorly damped low frequency oscillations is one of the main problems threatening safe and stable operation of the interconnected power systems and reducing the capability of transmission the power. The generator's excitation system has been supplemented with the Power System Stabilizer (PSS) in order to improve the damping of these low oscillations. In the latest smart power grids, the Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) become a fundamental element in the monitoring, protection and control applications as PMU signals are more accurate than the conventional measurement units and real time GPS stamped. In this study, Fuzzy Power System Stabilizer (FPSS) has been designed and its performance in damping inter-are oscillations compared with the conventional PSS (CPSS) based on the simulation with MATLAB/Simulink model. The results of the simulation with the Simulink model proved that the performance of the designed FPSS in damping inter-area oscillation is better than the CPSS. One of the main features of fuzzy controller is that it doesn't require mathematical modeling as it is designed based on the time-domain and the operator experience while, in contrast, the conventional PSS requires to be designed in the frequency domain. Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) has been used to develop the real-time models of the test systems. The time-domain simulations with the RTDS model when the system subjected to the large disturbance (three-phase to ground fault) have been performed to show that the designed FPSS improved the damping of the oscillations effectively. The simulation results have been verified by modal analysis

    Effects of POD control on a DFIG wind turbine structural system

    This paper investigates the effects power oscillation damping (POD) controller could have on a wind turbine structural system. Most of the published work in this area has been done using relatively simple aerodynamic and structural models of a wind turbine which cannot be used to investigate the detailed interactions between electrical and mechanical components of the wind turbine. Therefore, a detailed model that combines electrical, structural and aerodynamic characteristics of a grid-connected Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) based wind turbine has been developed by adapting the NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory) 5MW wind turbine model within FAST (Fatigue, Aerodynamics, Structures, and Turbulence) code. This detailed model is used to evaluate the effects of POD controller on the wind turbine system. The results appear to indicate that the effects of POD control on the WT structural system are comparable or less significant as those caused by wind speed variations. Furthermore, the results also reveal that the effects of a transient three-phase short circuit fault on the WT structural system are much larger than those caused by the POD controller

    Wide-Area Control Schemes to Improve Small Signal Stability in Power Systems

    One of the main concerns for the secure and reliable operation of power systems is the small signal stability problem. In the complex and highly interconnected structure of future power systems, relying solely on operator responses and conventional controls cannot assure reliability. Therefore, there is a need for advanced Wide-Area Control Schemes (WACS) that can automatically respond to degradation of reliability in the system. The main objective of this dissertation is to address two key challenges regarding the design and implementation of wide-area control schemes for damping inter-area oscillations. First is the high communication cost associated with optimal centralized control approaches. As power networks are large-scale systems, both the synthesis and the implementation of centralized controllers suggested by most of the previous studies are often impossible in practice. Second is the difficulty of obtaining accurate system-wide dynamic models for initiating and updating the control design. In this research, we introduced wide-area damping control strategies that not only ensure the small signal stability with the desired performance but also consider communication and model information limitations in the design. A state feedback formulation is proposed that aims to simultaneously optimize a standard Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) cost criterion and induce a pre-defined communication structure. We solved the proposed problem with three different objectives to target a specific wide-area damping control design challenge in each setting. First, the communication structure is enforced as a constraint in the optimization and solved for a large idealized power network with information symmetry. Second, to make the method suitable for systems with arbitrary structures and information patterns, we proposed a group-sparse regularization to be added to the optimization cost function. Applications of the method for inducing the desired communication network and finding effective measurement and control signal combinations were also investigated. Third, we paired the proposed optimal control with a real-time model identification approach, to create a wide-area control framework that is capable of dealing with model information limitations and inaccuracies in online implementation. The performances of the proposed wide-area damping control architectures are validated through nonlinear simulations on different test systems

    Single-stage electrohydraulic servosystem for actuating on airflow valve with frequencies to 500 hertz

    An airflow valve and its electrohydraulic actuation servosystem are described. The servosystem uses a high-power, single-stage servovalve to obtain a dynamic response beyond that of systems designed with conventional two-stage servovalves. The electrohydraulic servosystem is analyzed and the limitations imposed on system performance by such nonlinearities as signal saturations and power limitations are discussed. Descriptions of the mechanical design concepts and developmental considerations are included. Dynamic data, in the form of sweep-frequency test results, are presented and comparison with analytical results obtained with an analog computer model is made

    System identification for modeling for control of flexible structures

    The major components of a design and operational flight strategy for flexible structure control systems are presented. In this strategy an initial distributed parameter control design is developed and implemented from available ground test data and on-orbit identification using sophisticated modeling and synthesis techniques. The reliability of this high performance controller is directly linked to the accuracy of the parameters on which the design is based. Because uncertainties inevitably grow without system monitoring, maintaining the control system requires an active on-line system identification function to supply parameter updates and covariance information. Control laws can then be modified to improve performance when the error envelopes are decreased. In terms of system safety and stability the covariance information is of equal importance as the parameter values themselves. If the on-line system ID function detects an increase in parameter error covariances, then corresponding adjustments must be made in the control laws to increase robustness. If the error covariances exceed some threshold, an autonomous calibration sequence could be initiated to restore the error enveloped to an acceptable level

    Innovative magnetorheological devices for shock and vibration mitigation

    Vibration and impact protection have been a popular topic in research fields, which could directly affect the passengers’ and drivers’ comfort and safety, even cause spines fracture. Therefore, an increasing number of vehicle suspensions and aircraft landing gears are proposed and manufactured. Magnetorheological fluids (MRFs), as a smart material, are growly applied into the above device owing to its unique properties such as fast response, reversible properties, and broad controllable range, which could improve the vibration/impact mitigation performance. MRF was utilized to achieve adaptive parameters of the vehicle suspensions by controlling the magnetic field strength of the MRF working areas. Generally, the magnetic field is provided by a given current, subsequently, it would consume massive energy from a long-term perspective. Thus, a self-powered concept was applied as well. This thesis reports a compact stiffness controllable MR damper with a self-powered capacity. After the prototype of the MR damper, its property tests were conducted to verify the stiffness controllability and the energy generating ability using a hydraulic Instron test system. Then, a quarter-car test rig was built, and the semi-active MR suspension integrated with the self-powered MR damper was installed on a test rig. Two controllers, one based on short-time Fourier transform (STFT) and a classical skyhook controller was developed to control the stiffness. The evaluation results demonstrate that the proposed MR damper incorporated with STFT controller or skyhook controller could suppress the response displacements and accelerations obviously comparing with the conventional passive systems
