Preliminary experiments on human sensitivity to rhythmic structure in a grammar with recursive self-similarity
We present the first rhythm detection experiment using a Lindenmayer grammar, a self-similar recursive grammar shown previously to be learnable by adults using speech stimuli. Results show that learners were unable to correctly accept or reject grammatical and ungrammatical strings at the group level, although five (of 40) participants were able to do so with detailed instructions before the exposure phase

Definiteness and determinacy
This paper distinguishes between definiteness and determinacy. Definiteness is seen as a morphological category which, in English, marks a (weak) uniqueness presupposition, while determinacy consists in denoting an individual. Definite descriptions are argued to be fundamentally predicative, presupposing uniqueness but not existence, and to acquire existential import through general type-shifting operations that apply not only to definites, but also indefinites and possessives. Through these shifts, argumental definite descriptions may become either determinate (and thus denote an individual) or indeterminate (functioning as an existential quantifier). The latter option is observed in examples like ‘Anna didn’t give the only invited talk at the conference’, which, on its indeterminate reading, implies that there is nothing in the extension of ‘only invited talk at the conference’. The Role of Indexing in Subject Retrieval
On first reading the list of speakers proposed for this institute, I
became aware of being rather the "odd man out" for two reasons. Firstly, I
was asked to present a paper on PRECIS which is very much a verbal
indexing system-at a conference dominated by contributions on classification
schemes with a natural bias, as the centenary year approaches, toward the
Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC). Secondly, I feared (quite wrongly, as it
happens) that I might be at variance with one or two of my fellow speakers,
who would possibly like to assure us, in an age when we can no longer ignore
the computer, that traditional library schemes such as DDC and Library of
Congress Classification (LCC) are capable of maintaining their original
function of organizing collections of documents, and at the same time are also
well suited to the retrieval of relevant citations from machine-held files. In
this context, I am reminded of a review of a general collection of essays on
classification schemes which appeared in the Journal of Documentation in
1972. Norman Roberts, reviewing the papers which dealt specifically with the
well established schemes, deduced that "all the writers project their particular
schemes into the future with an optimism that springs, perhaps, as much from
a sense of emotional involvement as from concrete evidence." Since I do not
believe that these general schemes can play any significant part in the retrieval
of items from mechanized files, it appeared that I had been cast in the role of

On the relevance of the neurobiological analogue of the finite-state architecture
We present two simple arguments for the potential relevance of a neurobiological analogue of the finite-state architecture. The first assumes the classical cognitive framework, is well-known, and is based on the assumption that the brain is finite with respect to its memory organization. The second is formulated within a general dynamical systems framework and is based on the assumption that the brain sustains some level of noise and/or does not utilize infinite precision processing. We briefly review the classical cognitive framework based on Church-Turing computability and non-classical approaches based on analog processing in dynamical systems. We conclude that the dynamical neurobiological analogue of the finite-state architecture appears to be relevant, at least at an implementational level, for cognitive brain systems
Consequences of a Goedel's misjudgment
The fundamental aim of the paper is to correct an harmful way to interpret a
Goedel's erroneous remark at the Congress of Koenigsberg in 1930. Despite the
Goedel's fault is rather venial, its misreading has produced and continues to
produce dangerous fruits, as to apply the incompleteness Theorems to the full
second-order Arithmetic and to deduce the semantic incompleteness of its
language by these same Theorems. The first three paragraphs are introductory
and serve to define the languages inherently semantic and its properties, to
discuss the consequences of the expression order used in a language and some
question about the semantic completeness: in particular is highlighted the fact
that a non-formal theory may be semantically complete despite using a language
semantically incomplete. Finally, an alternative interpretation of the Goedel's
