LIMIT: Learning Interfaces to Maximize Information Transfer
Robots can use auditory, visual, or haptic interfaces to convey information
to human users. The way these interfaces select signals is typically
pre-defined by the designer: for instance, a haptic wristband might vibrate
when the robot is moving and squeeze when the robot stops. But different people
interpret the same signals in different ways, so that what makes sense to one
person might be confusing or unintuitive to another. In this paper we introduce
a unified algorithmic formalism for learning co-adaptive interfaces from
scratch. Our method does not need to know the human's task (i.e., what the
human is using these signals for). Instead, our insight is that interpretable
interfaces should select signals that maximize correlation between the human's
actions and the information the interface is trying to convey. Applying this
insight we develop LIMIT: Learning Interfaces to Maximize Information Transfer.
LIMIT optimizes a tractable, real-time proxy of information gain in continuous
spaces. The first time a person works with our system the signals may appear
random; but over repeated interactions the interface learns a one-to-one
mapping between displayed signals and human responses. Our resulting approach
is both personalized to the current user and not tied to any specific interface
modality. We compare LIMIT to state-of-the-art baselines across controlled
simulations, an online survey, and an in-person user study with auditory,
visual, and haptic interfaces. Overall, our results suggest that LIMIT learns
interfaces that enable users to complete the task more quickly and efficiently,
and users subjectively prefer LIMIT to the alternatives. See videos here:

Англійська мова для навчання і работи. Навчальний посібник з англійської мови за професійним спрямуванням для студентів і фахівців галузі знань 0503 Розробка корисних копалин Т 1
A coursebook includes all the activities of students’ work at ESP course aimed at development of language behaviour
necessary for effective communication of students in their study and specialism areas. The tasks and activities given in
the coursebook are typicalfor students’ academic and professional domains and situations. The content is organized in
modules that covers generic job-related language skills of engineers. The authentic texts taken from real life contain
interesting up-to-date information about mining, peculiarities of study abroad, customs and traditions of English-speaking countries. Pack of self-study resources given in Part II contains Glossary of mining terms, tasks and activities
aimed at developing a range of vocabulary necessary for mining, different functions and functional exponents to be
used in academic and professional environment as well as tasks developing self-awareness, self-assessment and self-organisation skills. Testing points for different grammar structuresare given in Part III. Indices at the end of each part
easify the use of the coursebook. The coursebook contains illustrations, various samples of visualizing technical
information.
The coursebook is designed for ESP students of non-linguistic universities. It can be used as teaching/learning materials
for ESP Courses for Mining Engineers as well as for self-study of subject and specialist teachers, practicing mining
engineers and researchers in Engineering.У посібнику представлені всі види діяльності студентів з вивчення англійської мови, спрямовані на

Protocol Requirements for Self-organizing Artifacts: Towards an Ambient Intelligence
We discuss which properties common-use artifacts should have to collaborate
without human intervention. We conceive how devices, such as mobile phones,
PDAs, and home appliances, could be seamlessly integrated to provide an
"ambient intelligence" that responds to the user's desires without requiring
explicit programming or commands. While the hardware and software technology to
build such systems already exists, as yet there is no standard protocol that
can learn new meanings. We propose the first steps in the development of such a
protocol, which would need to be adaptive, extensible, and open to the
community, while promoting self-organization. We argue that devices,
interacting through "game-like" moves, can learn to agree about how to
communicate, with whom to cooperate, and how to delegate and coordinate
specialized tasks. Thus, they may evolve a distributed cognition or collective
intelligence capable of tackling complex tasks.Comment: To be presented at 5th International Conference on Complex System
Workshop report European multifunctional farmers network : creating an European network of pioneers in multifunctional agriculture
This report describes the results of the Workshop European Multifunctional Farmers Network (EMFN) which was held on October 23, 2008 on the multifunctional farm “De Zonnehoeve” of Piet van IJzendoorn, at Zeewolde, the Netherlands. This workshop was part of the European Eemland Conference ‘Versatile Countryside’ which was held 22 – 24 October 2008 (see http://www.eeconference.eu/). This report introduces the of the European Multifunctional Farmers Network, and describes the program of the workshop and the results of the different sessions within the workshop. In addition, it provides the outcome of a pilot with international rural development students working with international multifunctional farmers, using the Interactive Strategic Management Method
Taking Turing by Surprise? Designing Digital Computers for morally-loaded contexts
There is much to learn from what Turing hastily dismissed as Lady Lovelace s
objection. Digital computers can indeed surprise us. Just like a piece of art,
algorithms can be designed in such a way as to lead us to question our
understanding of the world, or our place within it. Some humans do lose the
capacity to be surprised in that way. It might be fear, or it might be the
comfort of ideological certainties. As lazy normative animals, we do need to be
able to rely on authorities to simplify our reasoning: that is ok. Yet the
growing sophistication of systems designed to free us from the constraints of
normative engagement may take us past a point of no-return. What if, through
lack of normative exercise, our moral muscles became so atrophied as to leave
us unable to question our social practices? This paper makes two distinct
normative claims:
1. Decision-support systems should be designed with a view to regularly
jolting us out of our moral torpor.
2. Without the depth of habit to somatically anchor model certainty, a
computer s experience of something new is very different from that which in
humans gives rise to non-trivial surprises. This asymmetry has key
repercussions when it comes to the shape of ethical agency in artificial moral
agents. The worry is not just that they would be likely to leap morally ahead
of us, unencumbered by habits. The main reason to doubt that the moral
trajectories of humans v. autonomous systems might remain compatible stems from
the asymmetry in the mechanisms underlying moral change. Whereas in humans
surprises will continue to play an important role in waking us to the need for
moral change, cognitive processes will rule when it comes to machines. This
asymmetry will translate into increasingly different moral outlooks, to the
point of likely unintelligibility. The latter prospect is enough to doubt the
desirability of autonomous moral agents
