The Impact of Learning Management System Usage on Cognitive and Affective Performance

    Get PDF
1 INTRODUCTION Since learning management systems (LMSs) are offering a great variety of channels and workspaces to facilitate information sharing and communication among learners during learning process, many educational organizations have adopted a specific LMS into their educational context. A LMS is a software that handles learning tasks such as creating course catalogs, registering students, providing access to course components, tracking students within courses, recording data about students, and providing reports about usage and outcomes to teachers [1]. LMSs include several applications such as OLAT, WebCT, Moodle, ATutor, Ilias, and Claroline. However, LMSs can be utilized to integrate a wide range of multimedia materials, blogs, forums, quizzes, and wikis. Therefore, the researchers suggest that studying the influence of technology usage on end-users, especially students, is fundamental in learning and teaching environment. Despite educational organizations routinely make decisions regarding the best pedagogical approaches for supporting students’ performance, there is very little research on the impact of LMSs on learning outcomes [2]. Indeed, a considerable number of studies were conducted to examine the adoption of various LMSs, whereas little researches focused on understanding how educational institutes can enhance learning and teaching process through a particular LMS [3]. Consistent with this, the researchers found virtually no research on investigating the relationship between LMSs usage and attitude toward learning. [...

Over the past few years, the relationship between attitudes and behavior has been of a major interest to educators. Previous studies have found varying degree of associations between attitudes, behavioral intention and perceptions and corroborate the fact that attitudes influence patterns of behavior. As computer technology is becoming pervasive in the society, researchers have attempted to explore the links between individual's perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness and their intention to use the computer technology. A study was conducted in two higher education institution in the United Arab Emirates to find out students' intention to use computer technology employing the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) by Reference [1] as a theoretical framework and Structural Equation Modeling as an analytical tool. The results revealed strong relationships between the students' attitudes toward computer and intention to use. This paper further reports the applicability of technology acceptance model and its robustness and generalizability in different research contexts

This paper examines the social, organisational and individual factors that may affect students' acceptance of e-learning systems in higher education in a cross-cultural context. A questionnaire was developed based on an extended technology acceptance model (TAM). A total sample of 1173 university students from two private universities in Lebanon and one university in England participated in this study. After performing the satisfactory reliability and validity checks, the hypothesised model was estimated using structural equation modeling. The findings of this study revealed that perceived usefulness (PU), perceived ease of use (PEOU), social norms (SNs), perceived quality of work life (QWL), computer self-efficacy (SE) and facilitating conditions (FC) are significant determinants of behavioural intentions (BIs) and usage of e-learning system for the Lebanese and British students. QWL, the newly added variable, was found the most important construct in explaining the causal process in the model for both samples. Differences were found between Lebanese and British students with regard to PEOU, SN, QWL, FC, SE and actual usage; however, no differences were detected in terms of PU and BI. Overall, the proposed model achieves acceptable fit and explains for 69% of the British sample and 57% of the Lebanese sample of its variance which is higher than that of the original TAM. Our findings suggest that individual, social and organisational factors are important to consider in explaining students' BI and usage of e-learning environments

The focus of our research is the perceived relationship quality by women. Within this, we try to solve a problem of measuring the quality of the relationship, while we hope to link a new dimension to the measurement process. This is a correlational study, based on interviews "face to face". Their responses are recorded using Likert scales (0-4). There have been 478 women interviewed of the province of Seville. For data analysis we used SPSS and also combine exploratory and confirmatory analytical techniques, using SmartPLS 2.0.As the study results we obtain a structural equation model confirms the hypothetical set of relationships between the 4 dimensions. Also, we obtained high indicators of reliability and validity for the measurement model. The results obtained allow us to develop plans and make decisions on how to support women in rural areas to conduct a more profitable use of their interactions in social networks

Accounting education in universities a has challenges because are students millennial generations who have social characteristics, how to use information and build different knowledge, and e-learning systems as learning facilities have not been used optimally. The study aims to examine the role of shared accounting material in influencing the use of e-learning in the college environment, using a frame of technology acceptance model modified with the theory of planned behavior. A survey of accounting students at public universities in a city of Indonesia, academic year 2016/2017 that use e-learning, with seven constructs ability of using computer, perception of ease of use, perception of usability, user attitude, intention to behave, share and use of e-learning, with the instrument used a questionnaire in collecting primary data from 196 students majoring in accounting in the even semester as respondents. The results of the analysis using structural equation model partial least squares, showed that the ability to use the computer influence perception of ease of use and perception of usability, perceived ease of use affects user attitudes and usability perceptions, user attitudes affect the intention to behave, and the intention of behaving affect the use of e-learning systems, where as usability perception has no effect on user attitude and intention to behave in frames of technology acceptance. Sharing accounting materials affects user attitudes, behavioral intentions and the use of e-learning, but has no effect on usability perceptions in the frames of planned behavioral theories. The implications of the study that the preparation of teaching materials need to consider accounting material sharing activities for optimal use of e-learning

As long as students use Web 2.0 tools extensively for social purposes, there is an opportunity to improve students' engagement in Higher Education by using these tools for academic purposes under a Personal Learning Environment approach (PLE 2.0). The success of these attempts depends upon the reactions and acceptance of users towards e-learning using Web 2.0. This paper aims to analyse the factors (e-learning satisfaction and students’ perceptions, among others) that determine the intention of use of a PLE 2.0 initiative. The study in addition analyses the moderating role of the Need for Cognition (NFC) in the model. The results indicate that the model proposed has a high explanatory power of the intention to use a PLE 2.0 and gives support to the moderating role of NFC. The study discusses how this analysis can help to improve course designs by teachers

Our study analyzes an educational experience based on the integrated use of social media within a higher education course under a personal learning environment approach and investigates the factors that determine students' loyalty to social media learning. We examined the moderating role of need for cognition (NFC) in students' formation of attitudes, satisfaction, and loyalty toward this learning experience. The results indicate that NFC has an influence on these variables, significantly moderating how loyalty toward social media learning is formed. For high-NFC students, satisfaction with the learning experience is the most important variable to explain loyalty; whereas for low-NFC students, attitudes have a stronger effect. Different strategies are suggested, according to the learners' NFC levels, for increasing the use of social media in personal learning environments. Practical implications for improving the integration of such informal resources into formal education are discussed.Junta de Andalucía – Programa Andaluz de I + D P12 SEJ 259

Recent researchers have focused on investigating the effect of personality traits on the continuance usage intention of consumers. Personality reflects the exceptional features of human beings, the characteristics that defined our essence and reflected in all our thoughts and actions.Eventually, as the usage of internet has shown a tremendous increase world-wide and particularly in Malaysia, it is reasonable to investigate its usage in terms of personality perspectives.Since the level of internet usage is voluntary rather than mandated, so it is more likely to reflect personal motives, needs, values, preferences and other personality attributes. Moreover, past researchers also had predicted that there is a possibility that future technology adoption decision will be more concerned on human nature compared to usefulness factors. As such this research investigated the influence of personality traits (Neuroticism and Agreeableness) towards continuance usage intention.Data was collected using self-administered questionnaires upon those taxpayers who are easily reachable in main cities in Malaysia.Data was analyzed using the Partial Least Squared Method (PLS).Results indicated that agreeableness has a significant relationship towards perceived usefulness and confirmation. Neuroticism has significant relationship towards confirmation but insignificant relationship towards perceived usefulness
