Advanced channel coding for space mission telecommand links

We investigate and compare different options for updating the error correcting code currently used in space mission telecommand links. Taking as a reference the solutions recently emerged as the most promising ones, based on Low-Density Parity-Check codes, we explore the behavior of alternative schemes, based on parallel concatenated turbo codes and soft-decision decoded BCH codes. Our analysis shows that these further options can offer similar or even better performance.Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures, presented at IEEE VTC 2013 Fall, Las Vegas, USA, Sep. 2013 Proc. Analysis of the Fracture of Reinforced Concrete Flat Elements Subjected to Explosions. Experimental Procedure and Numerical Validation

Many of the material models most frequently used for the numerical simulation of the behavior of concrete when subjected to high strain rates have been originally developed for the simulation of ballistic impact. Therefore, they are plasticity-based models in which the compressive behavior is modeled in a complex way, while their tensile failure criterion is of a rather simpler nature. As concrete elements usually fail in tensión when subjected to blast loading, available concrete material models for high strain rates may not represent accurately their real behavior. In this research work an experimental program of reinforced concrete fíat elements subjected to blast load is presented. Altogether four detonation tests are conducted, in which 12 slabs of two different concrete types are subjected to the same blast load. The results of the experimental program are then used for the development and adjustment of numerical tools needed in the modeling of concrete elements subjected to blast

Measurement of penetration and cycle time of jets from an industrial fluid coking spray nozzle

Fluid CokingTM is a process to upgrade heavy oils through thermal cracking. Oil is injected in a downward-flowing bed of hot coke particles, where it heats up and cracks into smaller vapour molecules. The down-flowing coke particles are sent to a burner where they are reheated and send back to the reactor to provide heat for cracking reactions. Liquid sprayed with atomization gas into a fluidized bed forms a jet cavity that absorbs bubbles from the bubbling bed and periodically releases a large bubble from its tip. The jet penetration length, thus, cycles. With a faster jet cycle, the liquid is distributed more uniformly inside the bed, which is highly desirable. Poor liquid distribution increases the formation of wet agglomerates that slow down the coking reactions and lead to operating problems in commercial Fluid CokersTM. A novel method is proposed to measure the jet penetration and cycle time in large, room-temperature fluidized beds. It is applied to the study of jet cavities from commercial-size spray nozzles, with a liquid flowrate of 180 kg/min with a sand bed of 8 tonnes. Six cameras-probes are positioned along the jet cavity. Computerized analysis of the resulting videos shows that the average jet penetration length and cycle time is affected by fluidization velocity and atomization gas flowrate. Measuring the evolution of the bed electrical conductance provides the rate at which water is released from the wet agglomerates. This study shows how liquid distribution can be improved by adjusting jet penetration and cycle time

The role of positive attitudes, satisfaction and joy or living as elements of happiness

    Get PDF
Articulo cientificoThe difficulty in defining happiness has allowed the identification and study of various elements that try to describe it; among these elements there is satisfaction with life, positive affect, personality traits, expectations, and needs. The purpose of this study is to identify the relationship between four of the variables that have been linked to happiness: satisfaction with life, joy of living, personal fulfillment and positive sense of life, using structural equation models (SEM). The Happiness Scale of Lima was applied to 1083 adults. The results show that only three of the proposed elements are related: positive sense of life, satisfaction with life, and joy of living, whereas personal fulfillment is part of the judgments the participants made about their own lives
