    Get PDF
The aim of the SCHEMA Network of Excellence is to bring together a critical mass of universities, research centers, industrial partners and end users, in order to design a reference system for content-based semantic scene analysis, interpretation and understanding. Relevant research areas include: content-based multimedia analysis and automatic annotation of semantic multimedia content, combined textual and multimedia information retrieval, semantic -web, MPEG-7 and MPEG-21 standards, user interfaces and human factors. In this paper, recent advances in content-based analysis, indexing and retrieval of digital media within the SCHEMA Network are presented. These advances will be integrated in the SCHEMA module-based, expandable reference system

Web site structure mining using social network analysis

Purpose – Web sites are typically designed attending to a variety of criteria. However, web site structure determines browsing behavior and way-finding results. The aim of this study is to identify the main profiles of web sites’ organizational structure by modeling them as graphs and considering several social network analysis features. Design/methodology/approach – A case study based on 80 institutional Spanish universities’ web sites has been used for this purpose. For each root domain, two different networks have been considered: the first is the domain network, and the second is the page network. In both cases, several indicators related to social network analysis have been evaluated to characterize the web site structure. Factor analysis provides the statistical methodology to adequately extract the main web site profiles in terms of their internal structure. Findings – This paper allows the categorization of web site design styles and provides general guidelines to assist designers to better identify areas for creating and improving institutional web sites. The findings of this study offer practical implications to web site designers for creating and maintaining an effective web presence, and for improving usability. Research limitations/implications – The research is limited to 80 institutional Spanish universities’ web sites. Other institutional university web sites from different countries can be analyzed, and the conclusions could be compared or enlarged. Originality/value – This paper highlights the importance of the internal web sites structure, and their implications on usability and way-finding results. As a difference to previous research, the paper is focused on the comparison of internal structure of institutional web sites, rather than analyzing the web as a whole or the interrelations among web sitesMinisterio de Educación y Ciencia DPI2007- 60128Junta de Andalucía. The purpose of this research is to produce a valid web-based learning media, practical, and effective in basic computer and networking subjects. This web-based learning media is designed to improve student’s understanding so that it can improve to learn the outcomes. The method in this study uses Research and Development (R and D) with 4-D development procedures (Define, Design, Develop, Desseminate). The data of analysis technique uses descriptive analysis techniques to describe the validity, practicality, and effectiveness of web-based learning media. The results obtained of this development research: The validity of web-based learning media is declared valid on the media and material aspects. The practicality of web-based learning media from teacher and student responses is stated to be very practical. The effectiveness of web-based learning media is stated to be effective in improve to learn the outcomes. Based on the findings of this study it is concluded that the web-based learning media is valid, practical, and effective to be used as a learning aid in basic computer and network subjects

Design Options for Service Directories in Business Networks

Web services and service oriented architectures (SOA) are spreading in many organizations toachieve business interoperability of their intra- and inter-organizational business processes. SOA isbased on the idea that service providers develop and publish web services via standardized interfacesin directories (registries) where the services will be found and bound by service consumers. Whilethese registry structures have emerged into a standard for local SOA implementations, the questionremains how service directories should be organized in a business network, i.e. when multiple companieswith individual SOA solutions interact. This research develops a framework for the analysis ofservice directories in business networks and provides design options for combining separate and distributedservice directories. These design options are based on the range, reach, and richness of webservice markets in the business network. The framework is applied to two business network cases

A Study of web based learning as a learning resource, whichis a learning activity that utilizes media site (website) which can be accessed through the internet network. This happens also in SMKN Malang, especially on the issue of the basic network of subjects. Basic network is one important part of the package on the Computer and Network Engineering expertise. On this basis, need to be developed web based learning media products that can be accessed through mobile devices and to run as a learning resource that is already created by using web based software that can be accessed using a web browser. This research is based on the model of development of ADDIE implemented five steps, namely analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Web based learning developed validated by expert content, learning media expert, 32 students in small groups, trials and 128 students tested large groups. The results of the validation material experts declared valid of 86.7%. The results of the validation of the learning media expert declared valid of 99%.Pembelajaran web based learning sebagai sumber belajar, yang merupakan suatu kegiatan pembelajaran yang memanfaatkan media situs (website) yang bisa diakses melalui jaringan internet.

This paper presented an in-progress research model to develop, design and test an innovated acculturated adaptive web-based learning systems which based on Vygotsky 's zone of proximal development (ZPD) development theory. Based on ZPD related theories and researches, this research proposed to use cognitive apprenticeship instruction model as design guides to develop the activity functions to support acculturation ZPD instructions in MOODLE, a most popular opensource web-based learning system in the world. A support acculturation ZPD instruction adaptive system engine/mechanism, Heuristic Adaptive Learning Pattern (HALP), were also proposed in this paper. The major proposed designed adaptive function will base on the Blockmodeling method that used in social network analysis methodology which modelling the learner’s learning portfolio and learning path

Implementing virtual collaborative inquiry practises in a middle-school context

The aim of the present study was to investigate the challenges that relate to the implementation of virtual inquiry practises in middle school. The case was a school course in which a group of Finnish students (N = 14) and teachers (N = 7) completed group inquiries through virtual collaboration, using a web-based learning environment. The task was to accomplish a cross-disciplinary inquiry into cultural issues. The students worked mainly at home and took much responsibility for their course achievements. The investigators analysed the pedagogical design of the course and the content of the participants' interaction patterns in the web-based environment, using qualitative content analysis and social network analysis. The findings suggest that the students succeeded in producing distinctive cultural products, and both the students and the teachers adopted novel roles during the inquiry. The web-based learning environment was used more as a coordination tool for organizing the collaborative work than as a forum for epistemic inquiry. The tension between the school curriculum and the inquiry practises was manifest in the participants' discussions of the assessment criteria of the course. The aim of the present study was to investigate the challenges that relate to the implementation of virtual inquiry practises in middle school.
