Towards an aspect weaving BPEL engine
This position paper proposes the use of dynamic aspects and
the visitor design pattern to obtain a highly configurable and
extensible BPEL engine. Using these two techniques, the
core of this infrastructural software can be customised to
meet new requirements and add features such as debugging,
execution monitoring, or changing to another Web Service
selection policy. Additionally, it can easily be extended to
cope with customer-specific BPEL extensions. We propose
the use of dynamic aspects not only on the engine itself
but also on the workflow in order to tackle the problems of
Web Service hot deployment and hot fixes to long running
processes. In this way, composing aWeb Service "on-the-fly"
means weaving its choreography interface into the workflow
Theories about architecture and performance of multi-agent systems
Multi-agent systems are promising as models of organization because they are based on the idea that most work in human organizations is done based on intelligence, communication, cooperation, and massive parallel processing. They offer an alternative for system theories of organization, which are rather abstract of nature and do not pay attention to the agent level. In contrast, classical organization theories offer a rather rich source of inspiration for developing multi-agent models because of their focus on the agent level. This paper studies the plausibility of theoretical choices in the construction of multi-agent systems. Multi-agent systems have to be plausible from a philosophical, psychological, and organizational point of view. For each of these points of view, alternative theories exist. Philosophically, the organization can be seen from the viewpoints of realism and constructivism. Psychologically, several agent types can be distinguished. A main problem in the construction of psychologically plausible computer agents is the integration of response function systems with representational systems. Organizationally, we study aspects of the architecture of multi-agent systems, namely topology, system function decomposition, coordination and synchronization of agent processes, and distribution of knowledge and language characteristics among agents. For each of these aspects, several theoretical perspectives exist.
Staging Transformations for Multimodal Web Interaction Management
Multimodal interfaces are becoming increasingly ubiquitous with the advent of
mobile devices, accessibility considerations, and novel software technologies
that combine diverse interaction media. In addition to improving access and
delivery capabilities, such interfaces enable flexible and personalized dialogs
with websites, much like a conversation between humans. In this paper, we
present a software framework for multimodal web interaction management that
supports mixed-initiative dialogs between users and websites. A
mixed-initiative dialog is one where the user and the website take turns
changing the flow of interaction. The framework supports the functional
specification and realization of such dialogs using staging transformations --
a theory for representing and reasoning about dialogs based on partial input.
It supports multiple interaction interfaces, and offers sessioning, caching,
and co-ordination functions through the use of an interaction manager. Two case

On the evolution of conceptual modeling
Since the 1980s the need increased for overcoming idiosyncrasies of approaches to modeling in the various sub-disciplines of computing. The theoretical model of evolution is used in this paper for analyzing how computing and conceptual modeling have changed. It is concluded that computing has changed into a social phenomenon with a technical core and that therefore relying on (formal) model semantics as the sole tool for the discussion of conceptual modeling is no more adequate. A number of language games of computing is identified and the task set to describe these language games to the extent necessary for deciding whether or not they can serve as the foundation of computing
Early aspects: aspect-oriented requirements engineering and architecture design
This paper reports on the third Early Aspects: Aspect-Oriented Requirements Engineering and Architecture Design Workshop, which has been held in Lancaster, UK, on March 21, 2004. The workshop included a presentation session and working sessions in which the particular topics on early aspects were discussed. The primary goal of the workshop was to focus on challenges to defining methodical software development processes for aspects from early on in the software life cycle and explore the potential of proposed methods and techniques to scale up to industrial applications
Edicts: implementing features with flexible binding times
ManuscriptIn a software product line, the binding time of a feature is the time at which one decides to include or exclude a feature from a product. Typical binding site implementations are intended to support a single binding time only, e.g., compile time or run time. Sometimes, however, a product line must support features with variable binding times. For instance, a product line may need to include both embedded system configurations, in which features are selected and optimized early, and desktop configurations, in which client programs choose features on demand. We present a new technique for implementing the binding sites of features that require flexible binding times. Our technique combines design patterns and aspect-oriented programming: a pattern encapsulates the variation point, and targeted aspects-called edicts-set the binding times of the pattern participants. We describe our approach and demonstrate its usefulness by creating a middleware product line capable of serving the desktop and embedded domains. Our product line is based on JacORB, a middleware platform with many dynamically configurable features. By using edicts to select features at compile time, we create a version of JacORB more suited to resource-constrained environments. By configuring four JacORB subsystems via edicts, we achieve a 32.2% reduction in code size. Our examples show that our technique effectively modularizes binding-time concerns, supporting both compile-time optimization and run-time flexibility as needed
Semantics of trace relations in requirements models for consistency checking and inferencing
Requirements traceability is the ability to relate requirements back to stakeholders and forward to corresponding design artifacts, code, and test cases. Although considerable research has been devoted to relating requirements in both forward and backward directions, less attention has been paid to relating requirements with other requirements. Relations between requirements influence a number of activities during software development such as consistency checking and change management. In most approaches and tools, there is a lack of precise definition of requirements relations. In this respect, deficient results may be produced. In this paper, we aim at formal definitions of the relation types in order to enable reasoning about requirements relations. We give a requirements metamodel with commonly used relation types. The semantics of the relations is provided with a formalization in first-order logic. We use the formalization for consistency checking of relations and for inferring new relations. A tool has been built to support both reasoning activities. We illustrate our approach in an example which shows that the formal semantics of relation types enables new relations to be inferred and contradicting relations in requirements documents to be determined. The application of requirements reasoning based on formal semantics resolves many of the deficiencies observed in other approaches. Our tool supports better understanding of dependencies between requirements
