    An Information Theoretic Approach For Feature Selection And Segmentation In Posterior Fossa Tumors

    Posterior Fossa (PF) is a type of brain tumor located in or near brain stem and cerebellum. About 55% - 70 % pediatric brain tumors arise in the posterior fossa, compared with only 15% - 20% of adult tumors. For segmenting PF tumors we should have features to study the characteristics of tumors. In literature, different types of texture features such as Fractal Dimension (FD) and Multifractional Brownian Motion (mBm) have been exploited for measuring randomness associated with brain and tumor tissues structures, and the varying appearance of tissues in magnetic resonance images (MRI). For selecting best features techniques such as neural network and boosting methods have been exploited. However, neural network cannot descirbe about the properties of texture features. We explore methods such as information theroetic methods which can perform feature selection based on properties of texture features. The primary contribution of this dissertation is investigating efficacy of different image features such as intensity, fractal texture, and level - set shape in segmentation of PF tumor for pediatric patients. We explore effectiveness of using four different feature selection and three different segmentation techniques respectively to discriminate tumor regions from normal tissue in multimodal brain MRI. Our research suggest that Kullback - Leibler Divergence (KLD) measure for feature ranking and selection and Expectation Maximization (EM) algorithm for feature fusion and tumor segmentation offer the best performance for the patient data in this study. To improve segmentation accuracy, we need to consider abnormalities such as cyst, edema and necrosis which surround tumors. In this work, we exploit features which describe properties of cyst and technique which can be used to segment it. To achieve this goal, we extend the two class KLD techniques to multiclass feature selection techniques, so that we can effectively select features for tumor, cyst and non tumor tissues. We compute segemntation accuracy by computing number of pixels segemented to total number of pixels for the best features. For automated process we integrate the inhomoheneity correction, feature selection using KLD and segmentation in an integrated EM framework.     Artificially intelligent eyes, built on machine and deep learning technologies, can empower our capability of analysing patients’ images. By revealing information invisible at our eyes, we can build decision aids that help our clinicians to provide more effective treatment, while reducing side effects. The power of these decision aids is to be based on patient tumour biologically unique properties, referred to as biomarkers. To fully translate this technology into the clinic we need to overcome barriers related to the reliability of image-derived biomarkers, trustiness in AI algorithms and privacy-related issues that hamper the validation of the biomarkers. This thesis developed methodologies to solve the presented issues, defining a road map for the responsible usage of quantitative imaging into the clinic as decision support system for better patient care

    Advances in Hyperspectral Image Classification Methods for Vegetation and Agricultural Cropland Studies

    Hyperspectral data are becoming more widely available via sensors on airborne and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platforms, as well as proximal platforms. While space-based hyperspectral data continue to be limited in availability, multiple spaceborne Earth-observing missions on traditional platforms are scheduled for launch, and companies are experimenting with small satellites for constellations to observe the Earth, as well as for planetary missions. Land cover mapping via classification is one of the most important applications of hyperspectral remote sensing and will increase in significance as time series of imagery are more readily available. However, while the narrow bands of hyperspectral data provide new opportunities for chemistry-based modeling and mapping, challenges remain. Hyperspectral data are high dimensional, and many bands are highly correlated or irrelevant for a given classification problem. For supervised classification methods, the quantity of training data is typically limited relative to the dimension of the input space. The resulting Hughes phenomenon, often referred to as the curse of dimensionality, increases potential for unstable parameter estimates, overfitting, and poor generalization of classifiers. This is particularly problematic for parametric approaches such as Gaussian maximum likelihoodbased classifiers that have been the backbone of pixel-based multispectral classification methods. This issue has motivated investigation of alternatives, including regularization of the class covariance matrices, ensembles of weak classifiers, development of feature selection and extraction methods, adoption of nonparametric classifiers, and exploration of methods to exploit unlabeled samples via semi-supervised and active learning. Data sets are also quite large, motivating computationally efficient algorithms and implementations. This chapter provides an overview of the recent advances in classification methods for mapping vegetation using hyperspectral data. Three data sets that are used in the hyperspectral classification literature (e.g., Botswana Hyperion satellite data and AVIRIS airborne data over both Kennedy Space Center and Indian Pines) are described in Section 3.2 and used to illustrate methods described in the chapter. An additional high-resolution hyperspectral data set acquired by a SpecTIR sensor on an airborne platform over the Indian Pines area is included to exemplify the use of new deep learning approaches, and a multiplatform example of airborne hyperspectral data is provided to demonstrate transfer learning in hyperspectral image classification. Classical approaches for supervised and unsupervised feature selection and extraction are reviewed in Section 3.3. In particular, nonlinearities exhibited in hyperspectral imagery have motivated development of nonlinear feature extraction methods in manifold learning, which are outlined in Section 3.3.1.4. Spatial context is also important in classification of both natural vegetation with complex textural patterns and large agricultural fields with significant local variability within fields. Approaches to exploit spatial features at both the pixel level (e.g., co-occurrencebased texture and extended morphological attribute profiles [EMAPs]) and integration of segmentation approaches (e.g., HSeg) are discussed in this context in Section 3.3.2. Recently, classification methods that leverage nonparametric methods originating in the machine learning community have grown in popularity. An overview of both widely used and newly emerging approaches, including support vector machines (SVMs), Gaussian mixture models, and deep learning based on convolutional neural networks is provided in Section 3.4. Strategies to exploit unlabeled samples, including active learning and metric learning, which combine feature extraction and augmentation of the pool of training samples in an active learning framework, are outlined in Section 3.5. Integration of image segmentation with classification to accommodate spatial coherence typically observed in vegetation is also explored, including as an integrated active learning system. Exploitation of multisensor strategies for augmenting the pool of training samples is investigated via a transfer learning framework in Section 3.5.1.2. Finally, we look to the future, considering opportunities soon to be provided by new paradigms, as hyperspectral sensing is becoming common at multiple scales from ground-based and airborne autonomous vehicles to manned aircraft and space-based platforms

    Multisource and Multitemporal Data Fusion in Remote Sensing

    The sharp and recent increase in the availability of data captured by different sensors combined with their considerably heterogeneous natures poses a serious challenge for the effective and efficient processing of remotely sensed data. Such an increase in remote sensing and ancillary datasets, however, opens up the possibility of utilizing multimodal datasets in a joint manner to further improve the performance of the processing approaches with respect to the application at hand. Multisource data fusion has, therefore, received enormous attention from researchers worldwide for a wide variety of applications. Moreover, thanks to the revisit capability of several spaceborne sensors, the integration of the temporal information with the spatial and/or spectral/backscattering information of the remotely sensed data is possible and helps to move from a representation of 2D/3D data to 4D data structures, where the time variable adds new information as well as challenges for the information extraction algorithms. There are a huge number of research works dedicated to multisource and multitemporal data fusion, but the methods for the fusion of different modalities have expanded in different paths according to each research community. This paper brings together the advances of multisource and multitemporal data fusion approaches with respect to different research communities and provides a thorough and discipline-specific starting point for researchers at different levels (i.e., students, researchers, and senior researchers) willing to conduct novel investigations on this challenging topic by supplying sufficient detail and references

    A fault diagnosis framework for centrifugal pumps by scalogram-based imaging and deep learning.

    Centrifugal pumps are the most vital part of any process industry. A fault in centrifugal pump can affect imperative industrial processes. To ensure reliable operation of the centrifugal pump, this paper proposes a novel automated health state diagnosis framework for centrifugal pump that combines a signal to time-frequency imaging technique and an Adaptive Deep Convolution Neural Network model (ADCNN). First, the vibration signals corresponding to different health conditions of the centrifugal pump are acquired. Vibration signals obtained from the centrifugal pump carry a great deal of information and generally, statistical features are extracted from the vibration signals to retain meaningful fault information. However, these features are either insensitive to weak incipient faults or unsuitable for tracking severe faults, thus, decreasing the fault classification accuracy. To tackle this problem, a signal to time-frequency imaging technique is applied to the pump vibration signals. For this purpose, Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) is applied to decompose the vibration signals over different time-frequency scales and extract the pump fault information in both the time and frequency domains. The CWT scales form two-dimensional time-frequency images commonly referred to as scalograms. The CWT scalograms are then converted into grayscale images (SGI). Over the past few decades, CNN models have been established as an effective practice to process images for classification and pattern recognition. Consequently, the extracted CWTSGIs are finally provided as inputs to the proposed ADCNN architecture to achieve feature extraction and classification for centrifugal pump faults. The performance of the proposed diagnostic framework (CWTSGI + ADCNN) is validated with a vibration dataset collected from a testbed specifically designed for centrifugal pump diagnosis. The experimental results suggest that the proposed technique based on CWTSGI and ADCNN outperformed existing methods with an average performance improvement of 4.7 - 15.6%

    An explainable AI-based fault diagnosis model for bearings.

    In this paper, an explainable AI-based fault diagnosis model for bearings is proposed with five stages, i.e., (1) a data preprocessing method based on the Stockwell Transformation Coefficient (STC) is proposed to analyze the vibration signals for variable speed and load conditions, (2) a statistical feature extraction method is introduced to capture the significance from the invariant pattern of the analyzed data by STC, (3) an explainable feature selection process is proposed by introducing a wrapper-based feature selector—Boruta, (4) a feature filtration method is considered on the top of the feature selector to avoid the multicollinearity problem, and finally, (5) an additive Shapley ex-planation followed by k-NN is proposed to diagnose and to explain the individual decision of the k-NN classifier for debugging the performance of the diagnosis model. Thus, the idea of explaina-bility is introduced for the first time in the field of bearing fault diagnosis in two steps: (a) incorpo-rating explainability to the feature selection process, and (b) interpretation of the classifier performance with respect to the selected features. The effectiveness of the proposed model is demon-strated on two different datasets obtained from separate bearing testbeds. Lastly, an assessment of several state-of-the-art fault diagnosis algorithms in rotating machinery is included

    Multisource Remote Sensing based Impervious Surface Mapping

    Impervious surface (IS) not only serves as a key indicator of urbanization, but also affects the micro-ecosystem. Therefore, it is essential to monitor IS distribution timely and accurately. Remote sensing is an effective approach as it can provide straightforward and consistent information over large area with low cost. This thesis integrates multi-source remote sensing data to interpretate urban patterns and provide more reliable IS mapping results. Registration of optical daytime and nighttime lights (NTL) data is developed in the first contribution. An impervious surface based optical-to-NTL image registration algorithm with iterative blooming effect reduction (IS_iBER) algorithm is proposed. This coarse-to-fine procedure investigates the correlation between optical and NTL features. The iterative registration and blooming effect reduction method obtains precise matching results and reduce the spatial extension of NTL. Considering the spatial transitional nature of urban-rural fringes (URF) areas, the second study proposed approach for URF delineation, namely optical and nighttime lights (NTL) data based multi-scale URF (msON_URF).The landscape heterogeneity and development vitality derived from optical and NTL features are analyzed at a series of scales to illustrate the urban-URF-rural pattern. Results illustrate that msON_URF is effective and practical for not only concentric, but also polycentric urban patterns. The third study proposes a nighttime light adjusted impervious surface index (NAISI) to detect IS area. Parallel to baseline subtraction approaches, NAISI takes advantage of features, rather than spectral band information to map IS. NAISI makes the most of independence between NTL-ISS and pervious surface to address the high spectral similarity between IS and bare soil in optical image. An optical and NTL based spectral mixture analysis (ON_SMA) is proposed to achieve sub-pixel IS mapping result in the fourth study. It integrates characteristics of optical and NTL imagery to adaptively select local endmembers. Results illustrate the proposed method yields effective improvement and highlight the potential of NTL data in IS mapping. In the fifth study, GA-SVM IS mapping algorithm is investigated with introduction of the achieved urban-URF-rural spatial structure. The combination of optical, NTL and SAR imagery is discussed. GA is implemented for feature selection and parameter optimization in each urban scenario
