Sir Walter Lawrence and India 1879-1918

Walter Roper Lawrence was born in Herefordshire on 9 February 1857; he was educated at Cheltenham College (1867-76) and Balliol College, Oxford (1877-1879), being head of the Indian Civil Service exam list in 1877. Lawrence's career was unusually varied but there are two themes which unify his wide-ranging experiences. The first is a reflection of Lawrence's education and early training especially in the Punjab; his approach to administration was one of "benevolent paternalism" and he was motivated by the ideal of service. The second theme is that of Lawrence's own personal character and abilities. He was a very likeable man and an able administrator. He combined an eye for detail with the capacity to understand the broad sweep of policy. These themes are illustrated and discussed within each chapter. This study begins with an examination of the importance of Lawrence's education and his early years in the Indian Civil Service. His service in the Punjab, in Rajputana and in the Government of India between 1879 and 1889 moulded his approach to Indians and to the administration of India. In Kashmir from 1889 until 1895 Lawrence undertook the land revenue assessment and settlement. This chapter discusses the problems he faced; the mechanics of the survey; the implementation of the settlement and its aftermath. Lawrence returned to India in December 1898 as Private Secretary to Lord Curzon. Lawrence's role was to facilitate implementation of Curzon's policies. His second function was to act as confidant and adviser to Curzon. This chapter highlights these differing roles and reviews Curzon's style of administration from the perspective of his subordinates. The management of the Prince and Princess of Wales' Tour of India in 1905-06 illustrates Lawrence's abilities in liaison and organisation. Lawrence served on the Council of India from 1907 until 1909. During the First World War he was responsible for monitoring the provision of medical care for the Indian troops serving in France (1914-15). Once again his coordinating powers were utilised to the full. The study concludes with an account of the activities of Lawrence's last years; he died on 25 May 1940

The community structure and feeding ecology of the ichthyofauna in the Mngazana and Mngazi estuaries, Port St. Johns, South Africa

The Mngazana and Mngazi estuaries are situated just south of Port St. Johns close to the biogeographical boundary between the warm temperate and subtropical zones along the east coast of Southern Africa. The Mngazana estuary is a permanently open estuary with three species of mangrove. The Mngazi estuary is a temporarily open/closed system. The ichthyofauna was sampled with seine nets and gillnets during June 2005, August 2005, November 2005, February 2006 and April 2006. The fish community structure was significantly different between the two estuaries with the differences being especially noticeable in the larger fish sampled with gillnets. There were significant differences in the fish community sampled with the seine net on both spatial and temporal scales in both of the estuaries. Certain warm temperate species were less abundant and certain subtropical species were more abundant at the Mngazana estuary than they were during a study conducted in 1975. Stomach content analysis revealed that most species had similar diets in the two estuaries with the only differences occurring among benthic feeding species. The diet of sub-adult piscivores comprised of a large proportion of penaeid prawns while the juveniles feed mainly on mysids. The zooplanktivorous fish feed mainly on copepods and mysids with the proportions varying between the species. Benthic feeding fishes showed the greatest variability in diet with plant material, detritus, crabs and copepods being the main food sources. Stable isotopes revealed that particulate organic matter and microphytobenthos were the most important carbon sources to fish in the Mngazi estuary. In the Mngazana estuary a combination of mangrove material, detritus, particulate organic matter and Zostera material were the most important carbon sources. The importance of each of these sources did, however, vary greatly between the different trophic guilds of the fish in the Mngazana estuary. The distribution of certain fish species was investigated in relation to physical parameters (temperature, salinity, turbidity and depth) and biological parameters (prey and predators) in the environment. It was found that most small fish (< 100 mm SL) were strongly correlated with turbidity where-as they showed weak correlations with their prey. Sub-adult piscivores fell into two groups, i.e. those that could tolerate turbid water and those that were only found in clear water. The group that also occurred in turbid water showed very strong correlations with their prey but the clear water group did not. It would appear that the small and thus vulnerable fish seemed to occur in areas that offered them protection rather than areas where their food supply is most abundant, where-as the piscivores were more influenced by prey distribution, as long as the physical conditions were tolerable to them

Gauged Fermionic Q-balls

We present a new model for a non-topological soliton (NTS) that contains interacting fermions, scalar particles and a gauge field. Using a variational approach, we estimate the energy of the localized configuration, showing that it can be the lowest energy state of the system for a wide range of parameters.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures; revised version to appear in Phys. Inflation and the quantum measurement problem

We propose a solution to the quantum measurement problem in inflation. Our model treats Fourier modes of cosmological perturbations as analogous to particles in a weakly interacting Bose gas. We generalize the idea of a macroscopic wave function to cosmological fields, and construct a self-interaction Hamiltonian that focuses that wave function. By appropriately setting the coupling between modes, we obtain the standard adiabatic, scale-invariant power spectrum. Because of central limit theorem, we recover a Gaussian random field, consistent with observations
