Kannada Character Recognition System A Review

Intensive research has been done on optical character recognition ocr and a large number of articles have been published on this topic during the last few decades. Many commercial OCR systems are now available in the market, but most of these systems work for Roman, Chinese, Japanese and Arabic characters. There are no sufficient number of works on Indian language character recognition especially Kannada script among 12 major scripts in India. This paper presents a review of existing work on printed Kannada script and their results. The characteristics of Kannada script and Kannada Character Recognition System kcr are discussed in detail. Finally fusion at the classifier level is proposed to increase the recognition accuracy.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figure

This paper proposes the combined methods of Wavelet Transform (WT) and Euclidean Distance (ED) to estimate the expected value of the possibly feature vector of Indonesian syllables. This research aims to find the best properties in effectiveness and efficiency on performing feature extraction of each syllable sound to be applied in the speech recognition systems. This proposed approach which is the state-of-the-art of the previous study consist of three main phase. In the first phase, the speech signal is segmented and normalized. In the second phase, the signal is transformed into frequency domain by using the WT. In the third phase, to estimate the expected feature vector, the ED algorithm is used. Th e result shows the list of features of each syllables can be used for the next research, and some recommendations on the most effective and efficient WT to be used in performing syllable sound recognition

Electroencephalogram (EEG) is a technique for recording asynchronous activation of neuronal firing inside the brain with non-invasive scalp electrodes. EEG signal is well studied to evaluate the cognitive state, detect brain diseases such as epilepsy, dementia, coma, autism spectral disorder (ASD), etc. In this dissertation, the EEG signal is studied for the early detection of the Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). MCI is the preliminary stage of Dementia that may ultimately lead to Alzheimers disease (AD) in the elderly people. Our goal is to develop a minimalistic MCI detection system that could be integrated to the wearable sensors. This contribution has three major aspects: 1) cleaning the EEG signal, 2) detecting MCI, and 3) predicting the severity of the MCI using the data obtained from a single-channel EEG electrode. Artifacts such as eye blink activities can corrupt the EEG signals. We investigate unsupervised and effective removal of ocular artifact (OA) from single-channel streaming raw EEG data. Wavelet transform (WT) decomposition technique was systematically evaluated for effectiveness of OA removal for a single-channel EEG system. Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) and Stationary Wavelet Transform (SWT), is studied with four WT basis functions: haar, coif3, sym3, and bior4.4. The performance of the artifact removal algorithm was evaluated by the correlation coefficients (CC), mutual information (MI), signal to artifact ratio (SAR), normalized mean square error (NMSE), and time-frequency analysis. It is demonstrated that WT can be an effective tool for unsupervised OA removal from single channel EEG data for real-time applications. For the MCI detection from the clean EEG data, we collected the scalp EEG data, while the subjects were stimulated with five auditory speech signals. We extracted 590 features from the Event-Related Potential (ERP) of the collected EEG signals, which included time and spectral domain characteristics of the response. The top 25 features, ranked by the random forest method, were used for classification models to identify subjects with MCI. Robustness of our model was tested using leave-one-out cross-validation while training the classifiers. Best results (leave-one-out cross-validation accuracy 87.9%, sensitivity 84.8%, specificity 95%, and F score 85%) were obtained using support vector machine (SVM) method with Radial Basis Kernel (RBF) (sigma = 10, cost = 102). Similar performances were also observed with logistic regression (LR), further validating the results. Our results suggest that single-channel EEG could provide a robust biomarker for early detection of MCI. We also developed a single channel Electro-encephalography (EEG) based MCI severity monitoring algorithm by generating the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) scores from the features extracted from EEG. We performed multi-trial and single-trail analysis for the algorithm development of the MCI severity monitoring. We studied Multivariate Regression (MR), Ensemble Regression (ER), Support Vector Regression (SVR), and Ridge Regression (RR) for multi-trial and deep neural regression for the single-trial analysis. In the case of multi-trial, the best result was obtained from the ER. In our single-trial analysis, we constructed the time-frequency image from each trial and feed it to the convolutional deep neural network (CNN). Performance of the regression models was evaluated by the RMSE and the residual analysis. We obtained the best accuracy with the deep neural regression method

In this paper two new methods for feature extraction are presented for speech recognition the first method use a combination of  linear predictive coding technique(LPC) and skewness equation. The second one(WLPCC) use a combination of linear predictive coding technique(LPC),  discrete wavelet transform(DWT), and cpestrum analysis. The objective of this method is to enhance the performance of the proposed method by introducing more features from the signal. Neural Network(NN) and Neuro-Fuzzy Network are used in the proposed methods for classification. Test result show that the WLPCC method in the process of features extraction, and the neuro fuzzy network in the classification process had highest recognition rate for both the trained and non trained data. The proposed system has been built using MATLAB software and the data involve ten isolated Arabic words that are (الله، محمد، خديجة، ياسين، يتكلم، الشارقة، لندن، يسار، يمين، أحزان), for fifteen male speakers. The recognition rate of trained data is (97.8%) and non-trained data  is (81.1%). Keywords: Speech Recognition, Feature Extraction, Linear Predictive Coding (LPC),Neural Network, Fuzzy networ

Training of a neural network with using deterministic transforms

Deep neural networks have been a leading research topic within the machine learning field for the past few years. The introduction of graphical processing units (GPUs) and hardware ad- vances made possible the training of deep neural networks. Previously the training procedure was impossible due to the huge amount of training samples required. The new trained introduced architectures have outperformed the classical methods in different classification and regression problems. With the introduction of 5G technology, related to low-latency and online applica- tions, the research on decreasing the computational cost of deep learning architectures while maintaining state-of-art performance has gained huge interest. This thesis focuses on the use of Self Size-estimating Feedforward Network (SSFN), a feed- forward multilayer network. SSFN presents low complexity on the training procedure due to a random matrix instance used in its weights. Its weight matrices are trained using a layer-wise convex optimization approach (a supervised training) combined with a random matrix instance (an unsupervised training). The use of deterministic transforms is explored to replace random matrix instances on the SSFN weight matrices. The use of deterministic transforms automat- ically reduces the computational complexity, as its structure allows to compute them by fast algorithms. Several deterministic transforms such as discrete cosine transform, Hadamard trans- form and wavelet transform, among others, are investigated. To this end, two methods based on features statistical parameters are developed. The proposed methods are implemented on each layer to decide the deterministic transform to use. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is illustrated by SSFN for object classification tasks using several benchmark datasets. The results show a proper performance, similar to the original SSFN, and also consistency across the different datasets. Therefore, the possibility of introducing deterministic transformations in machine learning research is demonstrated
