Mohawk promotes the maintenance and regeneration of the outer annulus fibrosus of intervertebral discs.
The main pathogenesis of intervertebral disc (IVD) herniation involves disruption of the annulus fibrosus (AF) caused by ageing or excessive mechanical stress and the resulting prolapse of the nucleus pulposus. Owing to the avascular nature of the IVD and lack of understanding the mechanisms that maintain the IVD, current therapies do not lead to tissue regeneration. Here we show that homeobox protein Mohawk (Mkx) is a key transcription factor that regulates AF development, maintenance and regeneration. Mkx is mainly expressed in the outer AF (OAF) of humans and mice. In Mkx(-/-) mice, the OAF displays a deficiency of multiple tendon/ligament-related genes, a smaller OAF collagen fibril diameter and a more rapid progression of IVD degeneration compared with the wild type. Mesenchymal stem cells overexpressing Mkx promote functional AF regeneration in a mouse AF defect model, with abundant collagen fibril formation. Our results indicate a therapeutic strategy for AF regeneration

The extraordinary outflow length and morphology of Addams crater deposits are compared with the Saharan submarine debris flow off Northwest Africa. Vapor cloud modelling and comparison of sonar data with radar images suggest a possible similar origin for the Addams crater outflow deposits

Lunar targeting study: Lunar and planetary Ephemeris tapes
The Univac 1108 computer tape data formats are documented for the ephermeris tape generated by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the ephemeris tape used by the Quick Response Targeting Program (QRTP). Ephermeris tapes are used as the data source for the position and velocity components of those celestial bodies being considered in an integrated trajectory simulation program. The QRTP ephemeris tape has data only for lunar mission simulations. The JPL ephemeris tape has data for the moon and the nine planets. The ephemeris tapes, the data formats, the coordinate systems, and units are defined. The transformation from the mean-of-1950 coordinate system to the nearest mean Besselian year is given
Analysis of some global optimization algorithms for space trajectory design
In this paper, we analyze the performance of some global search algorithms on a number of space trajectory design problems. A rigorous testing procedure is introduced to measure the ability of an algorithm to identify the set of ²-optimal solutions. From the analysis of the test results, a novel algorithm is derived. The development of the novel algorithm starts from the redefinition of some evolutionary heuristics in the form of a discrete dynamical system. The convergence properties of this discrete dynamical system are used to derive a hybrid evolutionary algorithm that displays very good performance on the particular class of problems presented in this paper
Venus and Mercury as Planets
A general evolutionary history of the solar planetary system is given. The previously observed characteristics of Venus and Mercury (i.e. length of day, solar orbit, temperature) are discussed. The role of the Mariner 10 space probe in gathering scientific information on the two planets is briefly described
UV photography of the earth and the moon
The fundamental aim of this experiment was the acquisition of ultraviolet photographs of the earth and the moon that could be used to interpret similar imagery of Mars and Venus. Venus shows no markings whatever when viewed in visible light, a phenomenon that is in keeping with its immensely thick atmosphere and perpetual cloud cover, but in the near ultraviolet, the planet exhibits low contrast markings which vary in position and appearance with time. Mars posed just the opposite problem from Venus at wavelengths below 4500 A, Mars shows very little detail, sometimes none at all, whereas at longer wavelengths, the surface is clearly visible. Occasionally observers have reported that this obscuration has lifted and the ground has become visible at the shorter wavelengths as well. Such events have been labeled blue clearings and led to the suggestion that the ultraviolet obscuration was caused by an atmospheric haze. Mariner 6 and 7 observations of Mars failed to find such a haze and lent support to the alternative view that ascribed the absence of detail on UV photographs to a simple lack of contrast between Martian surface features at these wavelengths
A Global Optimisation Toolbox for Massively Parallel Engineering Optimisation
A software platform for global optimisation, called PaGMO, has been developed
within the Advanced Concepts Team (ACT) at the European Space Agency, and was
recently released as an open-source project. PaGMO is built to tackle
high-dimensional global optimisation problems, and it has been successfully
used to find solutions to real-life engineering problems among which the
preliminary design of interplanetary spacecraft trajectories - both chemical
(including multiple flybys and deep-space maneuvers) and low-thrust (limited,
at the moment, to single phase trajectories), the inverse design of
nano-structured radiators and the design of non-reactive controllers for
planetary rovers. Featuring an arsenal of global and local optimisation
algorithms (including genetic algorithms, differential evolution, simulated
annealing, particle swarm optimisation, compass search, improved harmony
search, and various interfaces to libraries for local optimisation such as
SNOPT, IPOPT, GSL and NLopt), PaGMO is at its core a C++ library which employs
an object-oriented architecture providing a clean and easily-extensible
optimisation framework. Adoption of multi-threaded programming ensures the
efficient exploitation of modern multi-core architectures and allows for a
straightforward implementation of the island model paradigm, in which multiple
populations of candidate solutions asynchronously exchange information in order
to speed-up and improve the optimisation process. In addition to the C++
interface, PaGMO's capabilities are exposed to the high-level language Python,
so that it is possible to easily use PaGMO in an interactive session and take
