    Parallel and Distributed Simulation from Many Cores to the Public Cloud (Extended Version)

    In this tutorial paper, we will firstly review some basic simulation concepts and then introduce the parallel and distributed simulation techniques in view of some new challenges of today and tomorrow. More in particular, in the last years there has been a wide diffusion of many cores architectures and we can expect this trend to continue. On the other hand, the success of cloud computing is strongly promoting the everything as a service paradigm. Is parallel and distributed simulation ready for these new challenges? The current approaches present many limitations in terms of usability and adaptivity: there is a strong need for new evaluation metrics and for revising the currently implemented mechanisms. In the last part of the paper, we propose a new approach based on multi-agent systems for the simulation of complex systems. It is possible to implement advanced techniques such as the migration of simulated entities in order to build mechanisms that are both adaptive and very easy to use. Adaptive mechanisms are able to significantly reduce the communication cost in the parallel/distributed architectures, to implement load-balance techniques and to cope with execution environments that are both variable and dynamic.     Performance evaluation of a TDMA-based multi-hop communication scheme for reliable delivery of warning messages in vehicular networks

    International audienceVehicular Ad hoc NETworks, known as VANETs, are deployed to reduce the risk of road accidents as well as to improve passenger comfort by allowing vehicles to exchange different kinds of data, both between the vehicles themselves and potentially between the vehicles and the infrastructure. One of the major issues in VANETs is the need to improve safety information delivery over long distances. Hence, VANETs require efficient and stable routing protocols that can allow the safety information to be disseminated in a timely manner. We recently proposed TRPM, a TDMA-aware routing protocol for multi-hop communication based on a cross layer approach between the Medium Access Control (MAC) and the routing layers, in which the intermediate vehicles are selected according to their geographic position and the position of their time-slot in the TDMA scheduling frame. The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the efficiency of the TRPM protocol. To do so an analytical model is presented in which expressions are derived to calculate two performance metrics: the delivery delay and packet loss rate. In order to validate the mathematical model and the protocol, a comparison between simulation and analytical results is presented using the network simulator ns-2 and the realistic road traffic simulator MOVE/SUMO

    MEDAVET: Traffic Vehicle Anomaly Detection Mechanism based on spatial and temporal structures in vehicle traffic

    Currently, there are computer vision systems that help us with tasks that would be dull for humans, such as surveillance and vehicle tracking. An important part of this analysis is to identify traffic anomalies. An anomaly tells us that something unusual has happened, in this case on the highway. This paper aims to model vehicle tracking using computer vision to detect traffic anomalies on a highway. We develop the steps of detection, tracking, and analysis of traffic: the detection of vehicles from video of urban traffic, the tracking of vehicles using a bipartite graph and the Convex Hull algorithm to delimit moving areas. Finally for anomaly detection we use two data structures to detect the beginning and end of the anomaly. The first is the QuadTree that groups vehicles that are stopped for a long time on the road and the second that approaches vehicles that are occluded. Experimental results show that our method is acceptable on the Track4 test set, with an F1 score of 85.7% and a mean squared error of 25.432.Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures, submitted to Journal of Internet Services and Applications - JIS

Cognitive radio network is employed in VANET to ensure the efficient use of spectrum, as well as to support VANET’s deployment. Random increase and decrease of spectrum users, unpredictable nature of VANET, high mobility, varying interference, security, packet scheduling, and priority assignment are the challenges encountered in a typical cognitive VANET environment. This paper provides survey and critical analysis on different challenges of cognitive radio VANET, with discussion on the open issues, challenges, and performance metrics for different cognitive radio VANET applications

    Interference-aware multipath video streaming in vehicular environments

    The multipath transmission is one of the suitable transmission methods for high data rate oriented communication such as video streaming. Each video packets are split into smaller frames for parallel transmission via different paths. One path may interfere with another path due to these parallel transmissions. The multipath oriented interference is due to the route coupling which is one of the major challenges in vehicular traffic environments. The route coupling increases channel contention resulting in video packet collision. In this context, this paper proposes an Interference-aware Multipath Video Streaming (I-MVS) framework focusing on link and node disjoint optimal paths. Specifically, a multipath vehicular network model is derived. The model is utilized to develop interference-aware video streaming method considering angular driving statistics of vehicles. The quality of video streaming links is measured based on packet error rate considering non-circular transmission range oriented shadowing effects. Algorithms are developed as a complete operational I-MVS framework. The comparative performance evaluation attests the benefit of the proposed framework considering various video streaming related metrics
