We launched a project aimed to organize and create digital archives for library and information professions that will contribute to both research and education. The archive will comprise historical materials owned by the University of Tsukuba\u27s Graduate School of Library, Information and Media Studies, which shaped the history of the education of library and information professions for most of the 20th century. This project includes the formation of a comprehensive system for collecting and conserving materials and the implementation of a system for their utilization. The aims of this project are twofold: (1) to examine a methodological synthesis of library and information science and archival science and (2) to re-examine the history of the library and information professions and education.Major users of the archives are library and information science researchers specialized in library and information professions and the history of librarianship. This system will establish a multilingual interface for international researchers who are interested in comparing professional development models of education for librarianship. Museum materials will be used for educational content on the history of media technology. There are no precedents for a comprehensive archival system for the education of library and information professions that includes archival documents and museum documents. This archive thus has the potential to serve as an international model for knowledge-sharing on library and information science.Six subordinate cross-disciplinary studies are in progress under the project. They comprise (1) A detailed examination of the collection and oral histories investigation, (2) Information architecture for digital archives, (3) Historical research on library and information professions and education, using archival materials, (4) Modeling, implementation and evaluation of the archive, (5) Modeling of the exhibition space, and (6) Analysis of the research project (museums, libraries and archives collaboration). This poster presentation focuses on studies in progress on (2) Information Architecture for digital archives and (3) Historical research on library and information professions and education, using archival materials. The first study reconsidered “digital archives” to drive forward the project entitled “21st Century Archives for the Research Foundation of the Library and Information Professions and Education.” As a result, digital archives are defined as mapping of the original archives, holding to the principles of provenance, respect for the original order, preservation of the original forms of the archives, and permanent preservation. A real digital archive must be constructed based on an information architecture methodology.Information architecture is the structural design of shared information environments; the art and science of organizing and labeling websites, intranets, online communities and software to support usability and findability. It involves analysis of information context and organization, labeling, navigation and retrieval using a consistent design philosophy. Information design prioritizes how information is presented on a website. Information architecture, on the other hand, is a website construction method that focuses on how to organize information elements. This study aims to achieve faithful mapping between the context of the original resources and electronic resources through the application of information architecture methodology to the establishment of digital archives. In the second study, we adopted the methodology of digital humanities as our analytical scheme to clarify the historical development, current conditions, and future vision of the library and information professions and education. The materials in our archive collections for historical research of librarianship are periodicals, annual reports, minutes of meetings, syllabuses, business diaries, photographs, audio materials, video materials and films. They include unpublished and handwritten materials. Whatever their form, these materials are an aggregation of the memory of the philosophy of an institution and records of past activities. Previous studies have not included these materials due to their uncatalogued nature and often poor state of preservation. We used two illustrative examples that utilize digital archive collections to demonstrate the progress of research. The first attempt was to trace the history of library and information professions focusing on changes in nominal designations of librarians/information professionals. The other was a consideration of the gender issue concerning female librarians, using digital images from the archive. These primary investigations have suggested the potential for reconstructing a discourse on the library and information professions and education.Japanese Association for Digital Humanities Conference 2014, at University of Tsukuba, September 19-21, 2014 (Poster session 2

The result shows that the digitization of library resources in Donald E. U. Ekong library is at a very high extent and the librarians involved in the digitization of library resources are competent and possesses the necessary skills required. Digitization of library resources is challenged by several factors such as power supply, security of databases, infrastructure to contain the digitization process, staff capacity to manage the process, users’ dependency in traditional library resources, etc. and that the strategies for enhancing digitization of library resources include the installation of alternative to power supply such as standby power generating set, solar power system, utility power systems, etc., installation of anti-virus, malware and hacks proof software, inclusion of digitization sections while planning for library buildings, library user education should include skills needed for use of digital libraries The study concluded that in order to remain relevant in the present digital environment, libraries especially in developing countries should make every effort to digitize their local content for preservation and easy access

The DigitalCommons@CalPoly: A Case Study on the Development and Implementation of the Institutional Repository

    Get PDF
Academe first took notice of institutional repositories (IRs) in 2002, when universities began offering in-house services to manage and disseminate digital materials created by students and faculty. These repositories developed in response to profound changes, both in the needs of faculty and students and in scholarly communication itself. As the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC) notes, “…This increased visibility [and] demonstration of value can translate into tangible benefits, including the funding – from both public and private sources – that derives in part from an institution\u27s status and reputation.”1 The Cal Poly Provost and the Library Director viewed an IR as a mechanism to increase the visibility of - and access to - scholarship by Cal Poly faculty, students and campus constituents. At the same time, Cal Poly would join its peers in higher education by contributing to the emerging model of distributed, interoperable repositories that provide the foundation for the new model of scholarly publishing. The Provost pledged an initial 3-year funding commitment to the Library, with expenses from subsequent years to be covered by other means. At the request of the Provost, a Task Group consisting of Library and Campus Information Technology Services convened in 2006 to investigate the feasibility of launching an IR at Cal Poly. After investigating the resources required to launch a campus IR using open-source and hosted repository options, the committee arrived at the recommendation of using a hosted repository system (Berkeley Electronic Press’ DigitalCommons platform), and hiring two positions (Digital Repository Librarian and Library Assistant). The Kennedy Library deliberately chose a hosted software solution from Berkeley Electronic Press to keep new staffing at minimum and to focus on contributor recruitment and content management. The Digital Repository Librarian would reach out to contributors and to manage digital assets and their metadata. A support staff position would secure intellectual property permissions and communicate with publishers. Using student assistants, the repository staff members would manage the internal process of bibliographic searching and digitizing articles for ingest into the repository. Organizationally, DigitalCommons staff was located in Special Collections & University Archives to benefit from existing collections and knowledge of the campus. A later reorganization has relocated staff to report to the Director, Information, Resources and Archives within the Library. 1Crow, Raym (2002). The cybrary and the consortium: mutual benefits. The University of Queensland Cybrary and the Queensland University Libraries Office of Cooperation

This paper looks at the procedures and processes involved at the University of Queensland Library in its transition to a digital library, now known as the Cybrary, and describes the resultant information services available to students, scholars, and practitioners. As Australia’s first virtual library, the University of Queensland Library has been recognised by the Australian Award for University Teaching in 1998 and again in 2000. (http://www.cybrary.uq.edu.au ) The UQ Library is also a member of QULOC, the Queensland University Libraries Office of Cooperation, a consortium which initiates and supports cooperative world class solutions to information resource needs of university libraries in its member institutions. The traditional paradigm of the library was a physical place where scholars and students went to gain access to recorded knowledge using bibliographic records to guide them to rows of shelves of printed materials. Librarians guarded collections and assisted users. Much has changed in recent times. With the availability of electronic forms of information, stored locally, and accessed remotely, the new paradigm is the Cybrary – a gateway for clients located anywhere to access electronic resources everywhere and at any time. The Cybrarian is a navigator and guide. The Cybrary is the window on the world of knowledge. The effectiveness of the Cybrary in service delivery is dependent upon the effective implementation of information technology, combined with appropriate training for both cybrary staff and end users. The Cybrary uses a single interface to provide integrated access to its printed and electronic resources and services - the Library’s website. From the website, the information searcher has access to electronic databases, electronic journals, and Internet resources all of which can be searched/browsed by subject. Help tools are also available online to guide the searcher through the range of resources. The availability of remote access to information greatly facilitates the delivery of education to distant students, and enables the access to information by remote workers in the field. It revolutionises opportunity for students, scholars and practitioners alike. Many of the functions of the Cybrary are enhanced and supported through its membership of the Consortium, which is used as a vehicle for such activities as information sharing, continuing education, staff development, and cooperative research and development projects
