    Polarization fields: dynamic light field display using multi-layer LCDs

    We introduce polarization field displays as an optically-efficient design for dynamic light field display using multi-layered LCDs. Such displays consist of a stacked set of liquid crystal panels with a single pair of crossed linear polarizers. Each layer is modeled as a spatially-controllable polarization rotator, as opposed to a conventional spatial light modulator that directly attenuates light. Color display is achieved using field sequential color illumination with monochromatic LCDs, mitigating severe attenuation and moiré occurring with layered color filter arrays. We demonstrate such displays can be controlled, at interactive refresh rates, by adopting the SART algorithm to tomographically solve for the optimal spatially-varying polarization state rotations applied by each layer. We validate our design by constructing a prototype using modified off-the-shelf panels. We demonstrate interactive display using a GPU-based SART implementation supporting both polarization-based and attenuation-based architectures. Experiments characterize the accuracy of our image formation model, verifying polarization field displays achieve increased brightness, higher resolution, and extended depth of field, as compared to existing automultiscopic display methods for dual-layer and multi-layer LCDs.National Science Foundation (U.S.) (Grant IIS-1116452)United States.     Full-Color Stereoscopic Imaging With a Single-Pixel Photodetector

    We present an optical system for stereoscopic color imaging by using a single-pixel detector. The system works by illuminating the input scene with a sequence of microstructured light patterns generated by a color digital light projector (DLP). A single monochromatic photodiode, synchronized with the DLP, measures the light scattered by the object for each pattern. The image is recovered computationally by applying compressive sensing techniques. The RGB chromatic components of the image are discriminated by exploiting the time-multiplexed color codification of the DLP. The stereoscopic pair is obtained by splitting the light field generated by the DLP and projecting microstructured light patterns onto the sample from two different directions. The experimental setup is configured by simple optical components, a commercial photodiode and an off-the-shelf DLP projector.     Extended depth-of-field imaging and ranging in a snapshot

    Traditional approaches to imaging require that an increase in depth of field is associated with a reduction in numerical aperture, and hence with a reduction in resolution and optical throughput. In their seminal work, Dowski and Cathey reported how the asymmetric point-spread function generated by a cubic-phase aberration encodes the detected image such that digital recovery can yield images with an extended depth of field without sacrificing resolution [Appl. Opt. 34, 1859 (1995)]. Unfortunately recovered images are generally visibly degraded by artifacts arising from subtle variations in point-spread functions with defocus. We report a technique that involves determination of the spatially variant translation of image components that accompanies defocus to enable determination of spatially variant defocus. This in turn enables recovery of artifact-free, extended depth-of-field images together with a two-dimensional defocus and range map of the imaged scene. We demonstrate the technique for high-quality macroscopic and microscopic imaging of scenes presenting an extended defocus of up to two waves, and for generation of defocus maps with an uncertainty of 0.036 waves

    A compressive light field projection system

    For about a century, researchers and experimentalists have strived to bring glasses-free 3D experiences to the big screen. Much progress has been made and light field projection systems are now commercially available. Unfortunately, available display systems usually employ dozens of devices making such setups costly, energy inefficient, and bulky. We present a compressive approach to light field synthesis with projection devices. For this purpose, we propose a novel, passive screen design that is inspired by angle-expanding Keplerian telescopes. Combined with high-speed light field projection and nonnegative light field factorization, we demonstrate that compressive light field projection is possible with a single device.     High-dynamic-range Foveated Near-eye Display System

    Wearable near-eye display has found widespread applications in education, gaming, entertainment, engineering, military training, and healthcare, just to name a few. However, the visual experience provided by current near-eye displays still falls short to what we can perceive in the real world. Three major challenges remain to be overcome: 1) limited dynamic range in display brightness and contrast, 2) inadequate angular resolution, and 3) vergence-accommodation conflict (VAC) issue. This dissertation is devoted to addressing these three critical issues from both display panel development and optical system design viewpoints. A high-dynamic-range (HDR) display requires both high peak brightness and excellent dark state. In the second and third chapters, two mainstream display technologies, namely liquid crystal display (LCD) and organic light emitting diode (OLED), are investigated to extend their dynamic range. On one hand, LCD can easily boost its peak brightness to over 1000 nits, but it is challenging to lower the dark state to \u3c 0.01 nits. To achieve HDR, we propose to use a mini-LED local dimming backlight. Based on our simulations and subjective experiments, we establish practical guidelines to correlate the device contrast ratio, viewing distance, and required local dimming zone number. On the other hand, self-emissive OLED display exhibits a true dark state, but boosting its peak brightness would unavoidably cause compromised lifetime. We propose a systematic approach to enhance OLED\u27s optical efficiency while keeping indistinguishable angular color shift. These findings will shed new light to guide future HDR display designs. In Chapter four, in order to improve angular resolution, we demonstrate a multi-resolution foveated display system with two display panels and an optical combiner. The first display panel provides wide field of view for peripheral vision, while the second panel offers ultra-high resolution for the central fovea. By an optical minifying system, both 4x and 5x enhanced resolutions are demonstrated. In addition, a Pancharatnam-Berry phase deflector is applied to actively shift the high-resolution region, in order to enable eye-tracking function. The proposed design effectively reduces the pixelation and screen-door effect in near-eye displays. The VAC issue in stereoscopic displays is believed to be the main cause of visual discomfort and fatigue when wearing VR headsets. In Chapter five, we propose a novel polarization-multiplexing approach to achieve multiplane display. A polarization-sensitive Pancharatnam-Berry phase lens and a spatial polarization modulator are employed to simultaneously create two independent focal planes. This method enables generation of two image planes without the need of temporal multiplexing. Therefore, it can effectively reduce the frame rate by one-half.
