    A Game Theory based Contention Window Adjustment for IEEE 802.11 under Heavy Load

    The 802.11 families are considered as the most applicable set of standards for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) where nodes make access to the wireless media using random access techniques. In such networks, each node adjusts its contention window to the minimum size irrespective of the number of competing nodes, so in saturated mode and excessive number of nodes available, the network performance is reduced due to severe collision probability. A cooperative game is being proposed to adjust the users’ contention windows in improving the network throughput, delay and packet drop ratio under heavy traffic load circumstances. The system’s performance evaluated by simulations indicate some superiorities of the proposed method over 802.11-DCF (Distribute Coordinate Function)

    Markov Decision Processes with Applications in Wireless Sensor Networks: A Survey

    Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) consist of autonomous and resource-limited devices. The devices cooperate to monitor one or more physical phenomena within an area of interest. WSNs operate as stochastic systems because of randomness in the monitored environments. For long service time and low maintenance cost, WSNs require adaptive and robust methods to address data exchange, topology formulation, resource and power optimization, sensing coverage and object detection, and security challenges. In these problems, sensor nodes are to make optimized decisions from a set of accessible strategies to achieve design goals. This survey reviews numerous applications of the Markov decision process (MDP) framework, a powerful decision-making tool to develop adaptive algorithms and protocols for WSNs. Furthermore, various solution methods are discussed and compared to serve as a guide for using MDPs in WSNs

    Collaborative Information Processing in Wireless Sensor Networks for Diffusive Source Estimation

    In this dissertation, we address the issue of collaborative information processing for diffusive source parameter estimation using wireless sensor networks (WSNs) capable of sensing in dispersive medium/environment, from signal processing perspective. We begin the dissertation by focusing on the mathematical formulation of a special diffusion phenomenon, i.e., an underwater oil spill, along with statistical algorithms for meaningful analysis of sensor data leading to efficient estimation of desired parameters of interest. The objective is to obtain an analytical solution to the problem, rather than using non-model based sophisticated numerical techniques. We tried to make the physical diffusion model as much appropriate as possible, while maintaining some pragmatic and reasonable assumptions for the simplicity of exposition and analytical derivation. The dissertation studies both source localization and tracking for static and moving diffusive sources respectively. For static diffusive source localization, we investigate two parametric estimation techniques based on the maximum-likelihood (ML) and the best linear unbiased estimator (BLUE) for a special case of our obtained physical dispersion model. We prove the consistency and asymptotic normality of the obtained ML solution when the number of sensor nodes and samples approach infinity, and derive the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) on its performance. In case of a moving diffusive source, we propose a particle filter (PF) based target tracking scheme for moving diffusive source, and analytically derive the posterior Cramer-Rao lower bound (PCRLB) for the moving source state estimates as a theoretical performance bound. Further, we explore nonparametric, machine learning based estimation technique for diffusive source parameter estimation using Dirichlet process mixture model (DPMM). Since real data are often complicated, no parametric model is suitable. As an alternative, we exploit the rich tools of nonparametric Bayesian methods, in particular the DPMM, which provides us with a flexible and data-driven estimation process. We propose DPMM based static diffusive source localization algorithm and provide analytical proof of convergence. The proposed algorithm is also extended to the scenario when multiple diffusive sources of same kind are present in the diffusive field of interest. Efficient power allocation can play an important role in extending the lifetime of a resource constrained WSN. Resource-constrained WSNs rely on collaborative signal and information processing for efficient handling of large volumes of data collected by the sensor nodes. In this dissertation, the problem of collaborative information processing for sequential parameter estimation in a WSN is formulated in a cooperative game-theoretic framework, which addresses the issue of fair resource allocation for estimation task at the Fusion center (FC). The framework allows addressing either resource allocation or commitment for information processing as solutions of cooperative games with underlying theoretical justifications. Different solution concepts found in cooperative games, namely, the Shapley function and Nash bargaining are used to enforce certain kinds of fairness among the nodes in a WSN

    Cooperative strategies have the great potential of improving network performance and spectrum utilization in future networking environments. This new paradigm in terms of network management, however, requires a novel design and analysis framework targeting a highly flexible networking solution with a distributed architecture. Game Theory is very suitable for this task, since it is a comprehensive mathematical tool for modeling the highly complex interactions among distributed and intelligent decision makers. In this way, the more convenient management policies for the diverse players (e.g. content providers, cloud providers, home providers, brokers, network providers or users) should be found to optimize the performance of the overall network infrastructure. The authors discuss in this chapter several Game Theory models/concepts that are highly relevant for enabling collaboration among the diverse players, using different ways to incentivize it, namely through pricing or reputation.     Network coding-aided MAC protocols for cooperative wireless networks

    The introduction of third generation (3G) technologies has caused a vast proliferation of wireless devices and networks, generating an increasing demand for high level Quality of Service (QoS). The wide spread of mobile applications has further reinforced the user need for communication, motivating at the same time the concepts of user cooperation and data dissemination. However, this trend towards continuous exchange of information and ubiquitous connectivity is inherently restricted by the energy-greedy functionalities of high-end devices. These limitations, along with the pressure exerted on the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry towards energy awareness, have induced the design of novel energy efficient schemes and algorithms. In this context, the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer plays a key role, since it is mainly responsible for the channel access regulation, the transmission scheduling and the resource allocation, thus constituting an appropriate point to effectively address energy efficiency issues that arise due to the users overcrowding. This dissertation provides a contribution to the design, analysis and evaluation of novel MAC protocols for cooperative wireless networks. In our attempt to design energy efficient MAC schemes, we were extensively assisted by the introduction of new techniques, such as Network Coding (NC), that intrinsically bring considerable gains in system performance. The main thesis contributions are divided into two parts. The first part presents NCCARQ, a novel NC-aided Cooperative Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ) MAC protocol for wireless networks. NCCARQ introduces a new access paradigm for cooperative ARQ schemes, exploiting NC benefits in bidirectional communication among wireless users. The NCCARQ performance in terms of QoS and energy efficiency is assessed by means of analytical probabilistic models and extensive computer-based simulations, revealing the significant gains we can achieve compared to standardized MAC solutions. In addition, the impact of realistic wireless channel conditions on the MAC protocol operation further motivated us to study the NCCARQ performance in wireless links affected by correlated shadowing, showing that the channel correlation may adversely affect the distributed cooperation benefits. The second part of the thesis is dedicated to the investigation of MAC issues in wireless data dissemination scenarios. In particular, the existence of multiple source nodes in such scenarios generates conflicting situations, considering the selfish behavior of the wireless devices that want to maximize their battery lifetime. Bearing in mind the energy efficiency importance, we propose game theoretic medium access strategies, applying energy-based utility functions which inherently imply energy awareness. In addition, Random Linear NC (RLNC) techniques are adopted to eliminate the need of exchanging excessive control packets, while Analog NC (ANC) is employed to efface the impact of collisions throughout the communication. During the elaboration of this thesis, two general key conclusions have been extracted. First, there is a fundamental requirement for implementation of new MAC protocols in order to effectively deal with state-of-the-art techniques (e.g., NC), recently introduced to enhance both the performance and the energy efficiency of the network. Second, we highlight the importance of designing novel energy efficient MAC protocols, taking into account that traditional approaches - designed mainly to assist the collision avoidance in wireless networks - tend to be obsolete.La presente tesis doctoral contribuye al diseño, análisis y evaluación de nuevos protocolos MAC cooperativos para redes inalámbricas. La introducción de nuevas técnicas, tales como la codificación de red (NC), que intrínsecamente llevan un considerable aumento en el rendimiento del sistema, nos ayudó ampliamente durante el diseño de protocolos MAC energéticamente eficientes. Las principales contribuciones de esta tesis se dividen en dos partes. La primera parte presenta el NCCARQ, un protocolo cooperativo de retransmisión automática (ARQ), asistido por NC para redes inalámbricas. La segunda parte de la tesis se centra en el diseño de protocolos de capa MAC en escenarios inalámbricos de difusión de datos. Teniendo en cuenta la importancia de la eficiencia energética, se proponen técnicas de acceso al medio basadas en teoría de juegos dónde las funciones objetivo están motivadas por el consumo energético.     A non-cooperative game approach for power control MAC in wireless sensor networks

    U bežičnim senzorsim mrežama, uspješna komunikacija je glavni cilj protokola za kontrolu pristupa bežičnom mediju za prijenos podataka (MAC). Istovremeni prijenos je jedan od glavnih načina rješavanja pitanja tradicionalnih MAC protokola s malom propusnošću i akumuliranim zastojem u bežičnim senzorskim mrežama s visokim opterećenjem i intenzivnim čvorovima. U ovom se radu predlaže novi MAC protokol s istovremenim prijenosom koji koristi zahvat kanala omogućujući uspješni istovremeni prijenos da bi se osigurala učinkovita komunikacija. Koristimo algoritam kontrole snage temeljen na ne-kooperativnoj teoriji igre s nepoptpunim informacijama u svrhu postizanja istovremenog prijenosa višestruke veze na istom kanalu. Uz to, uvodi se Bayesian-Nashov poučak ekvilibrija za dobivanje dokaza o njegovom postojanju i jedinstvenosti. Rezultati simulacije pokazuju da protokol koji predlažemo može dobro funkcionirati u okruženju interferencije za istovremeni prijenos podataka. Značajno je da je poboljšan protok mreže i da su smanjeni zastoji u širenju podataka te je tako došlo i do uštede energije. Također, budući da efikasno koristimo resurse kanala, učinkovitost ponovne uporabe prostora značajno je poboljšana.In wireless sensor networks, efficient communication is the ultimate goal of a wireless medium access control (MAC) protocol. Concurrent transmission is one of the main ways to solve the issues of traditional MAC protocols with low throughput and accumulated delay in wireless sensor networks with high-load and intensive nodes. In this paper, a novel concurrent transmission MAC protocol is proposed that exploits channel capture allowing successful concurrent transmission to ensure effective communication. We use a power control algorithm based on non-cooperative game theory with incomplete information to achieve multiple link concurrent transmission on the same channel. Moreover, the Bayesian-Nash equilibrium theorem is introduced to determine its existence and uniqueness proof. Simulation results show that the protocol we proposed can perform well in an interference environment for concurrent data transmission. Significantly, the network throughput is improved and the data propagation delays are reduced therefore saving energy. Also, since we use the channel resources effectively, spatial reusing efficiency is improved significantly
