    TLAD 2010 Proceedings:8th international workshop on teaching, learning and assesment of databases (TLAD)

    This is the eighth in the series of highly successful international workshops on the Teaching, Learning and Assessment of Databases (TLAD 2010), which once again is held as a workshop of BNCOD 2010 - the 27th International Information Systems Conference. TLAD 2010 is held on the 28th June at the beautiful Dudhope Castle at the Abertay University, just before BNCOD, and hopes to be just as successful as its predecessors.The teaching of databases is central to all Computing Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems and Information Technology courses, and this year, the workshop aims to continue the tradition of bringing together both database teachers and researchers, in order to share good learning, teaching and assessment practice and experience, and further the growing community amongst database academics. As well as attracting academics from the UK community, the workshop has also been successful in attracting academics from the wider international community, through serving on the programme committee, and attending and presenting papers.This year, the workshop includes an invited talk given by Richard Cooper (of the University of Glasgow) who will present a discussion and some results from the Database Disciplinary Commons which was held in the UK over the academic year. Due to the healthy number of high quality submissions this year, the workshop will also present seven peer reviewed papers, and six refereed poster papers. Of the seven presented papers, three will be presented as full papers and four as short papers. These papers and posters cover a number of themes, including: approaches to teaching databases, e.g. group centered and problem based learning; use of novel case studies, e.g. forensics and XML data; techniques and approaches for improving teaching and student learning processes; assessment techniques, e.g. peer review; methods for improving students abilities to develop database queries and develop E-R diagrams; and e-learning platforms for supporting teaching and learning

    Predicting the Relationship between Student, Faculty, and Institutional Diversity with Graduation Rates in Higher Education

    The importance and significance of diversifying higher education are undeniable. Research has examined that diversifying higher education may produce more graduates, predominantly minority students. However, more literature is needed on how diversifying faculty and students relate to and impacts overall undergraduate graduation rates in higher education in the United States. This study aimed to gauge the predictive relationships between student diversity, faculty diversity, institutional locale, enrollment size and admissions selectivity and construct a relationship with graduation rates. The study examined a random sample of 291 Title IV, four-year postsecondary institutions, and Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) employed for the data collection process. From IPEDS, the researcher obtained six years of cohort data from 2015-2020 for race and ethnicity of students and faculty, enrollment, admissions, and 2016-2021 graduation rates data, combined, averaged, and used for analysis. The study utilized a quantitative predictive correlational research design, and multiple linear regression analysis was used to analyze the data. A significant predictive relationship was found (F = 29.985, r = .623, p \u3c .001) between student diversity, institutional locale, enrollment size, admissions selectivity, and graduation rates. However, no significant predictive relationship (p = .568) was found between faculty diversity and graduation rates. The effect size was large (R=0.623), and the null hypothesis was rejected at the .05 alpha (α) significance level. Future research should be conducted to include more institutions from towns and rural areas to assess the further impact on minority students’ graduation rates

    ERP implementation methodologies and frameworks: a literature review

    Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementation is a complex and vibrant process, one that involves a combination of technological and organizational interactions. Often an ERP implementation project is the single largest IT project that an organization has ever launched and requires a mutual fit of system and organization. Also the concept of an ERP implementation supporting business processes across many different departments is not a generic, rigid and uniform concept and depends on variety of factors. As a result, the issues addressing the ERP implementation process have been one of the major concerns in industry. Therefore ERP implementation receives attention from practitioners and scholars and both, business as well as academic literature is abundant and not always very conclusive or coherent. However, research on ERP systems so far has been mainly focused on diffusion, use and impact issues. Less attention has been given to the methods used during the configuration and the implementation of ERP systems, even though they are commonly used in practice, they still remain largely unexplored and undocumented in Information Systems research. So, the academic relevance of this research is the contribution to the existing body of scientific knowledge. An annotated brief literature review is done in order to evaluate the current state of the existing academic literature. The purpose is to present a systematic overview of relevant ERP implementation methodologies and frameworks as a desire for achieving a better taxonomy of ERP implementation methodologies. This paper is useful to researchers who are interested in ERP implementation methodologies and frameworks. Results will serve as an input for a classification of the existing ERP implementation methodologies and frameworks. Also, this paper aims also at the professional ERP community involved in the process of ERP implementation by promoting a better understanding of ERP implementation methodologies and frameworks, its variety and history

    Active Methodologies for the Promotion of Mathematical Learning

    In recent years, the methodologies of teaching have been in a process of transition. Multiple active methodologies have proliferated, with the aim of changing the concept we have had of teaching so far. These advocate for a student who plays a leading role in the process of building learning, while the teacher acts as a figure who facilitates and glimpses the paths to learning. In order to be able to carry out this type of teaching in an optimal way, it is necessary for the teaching and research community to be correctly trained in its pedagogical principles and in the tools that boost its implementation. Among these principles and tools, it is of vital importance that information and communication technologies (ICT) be adequately handled. The use of active methodologies (project-based learning, problem-based learning, service learning, flipped classroom, mobile learning, etc.) or innovative pedagogical approaches (simulation, role-playing, gamification, etc.) promotes an improvement in the motivation of students as well as their skills. This aspect is especially important in the area of mathematics, whose contents are characterized by their abstraction, thus highlighting the need for its dynamization in classrooms of different educational stages

    State Appropriations and Allocation Ratios to Predict Financial Condition at Public Higher Education Institutions

    The higher education industry has faced increased competition in recent years from new institutions and learning platforms entering the marketplace. Public higher education institutions, in particular, have been forced to develop strategic plans due to limited state funding in recent years. These colleges and universities face the challenge of allocating their limited financial resources in a manner that will optimize financial strength and ensure long-term sustainability. Institutions classify their operating expenses into several different functional expense categories, including instruction, academic support, student services and operations and maintenance of plant. This paper analyzed the relationship between changes in state appropriations, allocation ratios of functional expenses, and an institution’s financial condition. Bivariate and multiple regression analysis was performed to determine how fluctuations in state appropriations and financial allocation ratios impact an institution’s financial condition. The research could aide higher education institutions in strategically allocating resources to improve their financial position. God has called us all to live in community and flourish. Higher education institutions promote community among students, faculty, and staff as well as provide knowledge and skills for individuals to flourish upon graduation

    Understanding of photosynthesis concepts related to students’ age

    In Croatian schools, the complex photosynthesis concept is presented several times during primary and secondary school, each time with more detail. The problems in understanding photosynthesis processes are known from many previous studies and our own research ; thus we aimed to investigate how the students’ understanding of the basic photosynthesis concepts increases during the schooling period, and is it enhanced by gradual introduction of new contents. The present study was conducted on 269 students from 6 schools and 35 students preparing to be biology teachers. To test the students’ conceptual understanding, we implemented a question about the trends of O2 and CO2 gas concentrations during the night, which was expected to lead students to a correct explanation of photosynthesis, including the issues of the plants’ respiration and the absence of photosynthesis. Students of all age groups gave mainly incomplete explanations. The best result was achieved by the youngest participants in the age of 11, who have relied on the freshly acquired and well trained, but reproductive knowledge. Older students’ answers (aged 15, 17 and 22), which include more detail about the light-dependent and light-independent reactions, suggested that they developed misconceptions such as the belief that “oxygen is produced in Calvin cycle during the night” and that “CO2 converts to O2”. Student's explanations indicate the consistency of their understanding of the process, which does not change with gradual introduction of new contents as they are older. The observed misunderstanding could be linked to the cumulative introduction of the complex theoretical contents, but excluding research- based learning, as well as to inadequate time dedicated to establishing connections between students’ pre-conceptions and novel information. Our research results might be a strong argument supporting the upcoming change in the national curriculum

    Using a Student Success Course and Transferred Credit Hours to Predict Student\u27s Likelihood to Retain in Online Higher Education

    As online education permeates a larger percentage of postsecondary student attendance, higher education institutions place a greater focus on online student retention. Online learners are entering college with varied backgrounds, demographics, and prior experience, yet most institutions are not differentiating the first-year programs for their incoming students with previous college-level experience. The following research used a binomial logistic regression analysis to explore existing, archival data to determine whether college transfer credit and a student success course can predict short- or long-term online student retention. This correlational study evaluated a randomized sample of 3,000 students who took a student success course and transferred in fewer than 60 credit hours and evaluated whether the success course could predict their retention at the university for the subsequent term (short-term) or through current enrollment (long-term). Results from the quantitative study showed that both predictor variables were statistically significant as predictors of student retention, both in the short- and long-term
