    MobiHealth-Innovative 2.5/3G mobile services and applications for health care

    MobiHealth aims at introducing new mobile value added services in the area of healthcare, based on 2.5 (GPRS) and 3G (UMTS) technologies, thus promoting the use and deployment of GPRS and UMTS. This will be achieved by the integration of sensors and actuators to a Wireless Body Area Network (BAN). These sensors and actuators will continuously measure and transmit vital constants along with audio and video to health service providers and brokers, improving on one side the life of patients and allowing on the other side the introduction of new value-added services in the areas of disease prevention and diagnostic, remote assistance, para-health services, physical state monitoring (sports) and even clinical research. Furthermore, the MobiHealth BAN system will support the fast and reliable application of remote assistance in case of accidents by allowing the paramedics to send reliable vital constants data as well as audio and video directly from the accident site

    Cellular networks have existed for almost forty years. During the course of their history, they have transformed from wireless voice communication providers to wireless network providers. Nowadays mobile broadband data forms the bulk of the cellular data transfer which was a staggering 14 exabytes per month in year 2017, or 2.9 gigabytes per smartphone per month. The Internet of Things is changing this connectivity landscape by introducing devices in the millions but with scarce individual resources and data usage. However, there are some challenges related to cellular data connections in constrained IoT devices. This thesis identifies those challenges and proposes solutions to overcome them for enabling simpler cellular data connectivity. We first present the technical challenges and solutions found in today’s cellular IoT devices. We then present a proof of concept prototype that realizes automatic cellular connectivity in a very constrained IoT device. The prototype is capable of connecting to a management system and reporting sensor readings without requiring any user interaction. Besides recognizing important improvements in the next generation of cellular IoT technology, the thesis concludes with suggestions on how to improve the usability of programming interfaces for cellular connectivity.Lähes neljäkymmenvuotisen historiansa aikana atkapuhelinverkot ovat muuttuneet puheen välittäjistä langattomaksi dataverkoksi. Nykyään langaton laajakaista muodostaa suuren osan matkapuhelinverkoissa siirretystä datasta, jota oli 14 exatavua kuukaudessa vuonna 2017. Esineiden Internet tuo verkkoon miljoonia laitteita joiden yksittäinen datansiirron tarve on vähäinen. Matkapuhelinverkon datayhteyden käyttö ei kuitenkaan ole ongelmatonta rajoittuneissa Esineiden Internetin laitteissa. Tämä diplomityö tunnistaa ja luokittelee näitä teknisiä haasteita ja ehdottaa ratkaisuja niihin. Esittelemme prototyypin joka toteuttaa automaatisen matkapuhelinverkon datayhteyden luonnin rajoittuneessa laitteessa. Prototyyppi ottaa yhteyden hallintajärjestelmään ja raportoi mittausdataa ilman käyttäjältä vaadittavia toimia. Johtopäätöksenä tämä diplomityö esittää parannuksia tehtäväksi matkapuhelinverkkojen datayhteyksien ohjelmointirajapintoihin niitä käyttävissä laitteissa. Löysimme myös tärkeitä parannuksia joita on jo tehty tulevan sukupolven matkapuhelinverkon määrittelyssä

    Mobile Life: A Research Foundation for Mobile Services

    The telecom and IT industry is now facing the challenge of a second IT-revolution, where the spread of mobile and ubiquitous services will have an even more profound effect on commercial and social life than the recent Internet revolution. Users will expect services that are unique and fully adapted for the mobile setting, which means that the roles of the operators will change, new business models will be required, and new methods for developing and marketing services have to be found. Most of all, we need technology and services that put people at core. The industry must prepare to design services for a sustainable web of work, leisure and ubiquitous technology we can call the mobile life. In this paper, we describe the main components of a research agenda for mobile services, which is carried out at the Mobile Life Center at Stockholm University. This research program takes a sustainable approach to research and development of mobile and ubiquitous services, by combining a strong theoretical foundation (embodied interaction), a welldefined methodology (user-centered design) and an important domain with large societal importance and commercial potential (mobile life). Eventually the center will create an experimental mobile services ecosystem, which will serve as an open arena where partners from academia and industry can develop our vision an abundant future marketplace for future mobile servĂ­ces

    Context-aware and automatic configuration of mobile devices in cloud-enabled ubiquitous computing

One exciting research area that is still very much in the realm of possibilities is that of cloud computing, and in this paper, we present our work, which explores the overlap of these two research areas. Accordingly, this paper explores the notion of cross-source integration of cloud-based, context-aware information in ubiquitous computing through a developed prototypical solution. Moreover, the described solution incorporates remote and automatic configuration of Android smartphones and advances the research area of context-aware information by harvesting information from several sources to build a rich foundation on which algorithms for context-aware computation can be based. Evaluation results show the viability of integrating and tailoring contextual information to provide users with timely, relevant and adapted application behaviour and content

    Information systems architecture for fire emergency response

    Purpose There has been a lack of meaningful information systems architecture, which comprehensively conceptualise the essential components and functionality of an information system for fire emergency response addressing needs of different job roles. This study proposes a comprehensive information systems architecture which would best support four of the key fire-fighter job roles. Design The study has built on the outcomes of two previous preliminary studies on information and human-computer interaction needs of core fire fighter job roles. Scenario based action research was conducted with fire fighters in a range of roles, to evaluate human computer interaction needs while using various technology platforms. Findings Several key themes were identified and led us to propose several layers of an integrated architecture, their composition and interactions. Research limitations The selected fire scenarios may not represent every type of fire expected in high risk built environments. Practical implications The current paper represents a shared discussion among end users, system architects and designers, to understand and improve essential components. It, therefore, provides a reference point for the development of an information system architecture for fire emergency response. Originality The proposed information system architecture is novel because it outlines specific architectural elements required to meet the specific situation awareness needs of four of the key firefighters job roles

    An Android-based personalized public transportation advisor

    This work presents the development of a mobile application which allows the user to access real time data related with public transportation information. This application combines the geographic user context and preferences with the data provided by a public transportation information system, fulfilling the necessities of today’s passengers and providing an incentive for the population to use the public transportation infrastructure. The proposed application, still in prototype stage, allows the user to benefit from real time access to public transportation data in a simple and intuitive form.     MIPv6 Experimental Evaluation using Overlay Networks

    The commercial deployment of Mobile IPv6 has been hastened by the concepts of Integrated Wireless Networks and Overlay Networks, which are present in the notion of the forthcoming generation of wireless communications. Individual wireless access networks show limitations that can be overcome through the integration of different technologies into a single unified platform (i.e., 4G systems). This paper summarises practical experiments performed to evaluate the impact of inter-networking (i.e. vertical handovers) on the Network and Transport layers. Based on our observations, we propose and evaluate a number of inter-technology handover optimisation techniques, e.g., Router Advertisements frequency values, Binding Update simulcasting, Router Advertisement caching, and Soft Handovers. The paper concludes with the description of a policy-based mobility support middleware (PROTON) that hides 4G networking complexities from mobile users, provides informed handover-related decisions, and enables the application of different vertical handover methods and optimisations according to context.Publicad

    Design and Experimental Evaluation of a Route Optimisation Solution for NEMO

    An important requirement for Internet protocol (IP) networks to achieve the aim of ubiquitous connectivity is network mobility (NEMO). With NEMO support we can provide Internet access from mobile platforms, such as public transportation vehicles, to normal nodes that do not need to implement any special mobility protocol. The NEMO basic support protocol has been proposed in the IETF as a first solution to this problem, but this solution has severe performance limitations. This paper presents MIRON: Mobile IPv6 route optimization for NEMO, an approach to the problem of NEMO support that overcomes the limitations of the basic solution by combining two different modes of operation: a Proxy-MR and an address delegation with built-in routing mechanisms. This paper describes the design and rationale of the solution, with an experimental validation and performance evaluation based on an implementation.Publicad
