    A feature-based approach for monocular camera tracking in unknown environments

    © 2017 IEEE. Camera tracking is an important issue in many computer vision and robotics applications, such as, augmented reality and Simultaneous Localization And Mapping (SLAM). In this paper, a feature-based technique for monocular camera tracking is proposed. The proposed approach is based on tracking a set of sparse features, which are successively tracked in a stream of video frames. In the developed system, camera initially views a chessboard with known cell size for few frames to be enabled to construct initial map of the environment. Thereafter, Camera pose estimation for each new incoming frame is carried out in a framework that is merely working with a set of visible natural landmarks. Estimation of 6-DOF camera pose parameters is performed using a particle filter. Moreover, recovering depth of newly detected landmarks, a linear triangulation method is used. The proposed method is applied on real world videos and positioning error of the camera pose is less than 3 cm in average that indicates effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method

    Vision-based indoor localization via a visual slam approach

    With an increasing interest in indoor location based services, vision-based indoor localization techniques have attracted many attentions from both academia and industry. Inspired by the development of simultaneous localization and mapping technique (SLAM), we present a visual SLAM-based approach to achieve a 6 degrees of freedom (DoF) pose in indoor environment. Firstly, the indoor scene is explored by a keyframe-based global mapping technique, which generates a database from a sequence of images covering the entire scene. After the exploration, a feature vocabulary tree is trained for accelerating feature matching in the image retrieval phase, and the spatial structures obtained from the keyframes are stored. Instead of querying by a single image, a short sequence of images in the query site are used to extract both features and their relative poses, which is a local visual SLAM procedure. The relative poses of query images provide a pose graph-based geometric constraint which is used to assess the validity of image retrieval results. The final positioning result is obtained by selecting the pose of the first correct corresponding image. © Authors 2019

    Large-scale monocular SLAM by local bundle adjustment and map joining

    This paper first demonstrates an interesting property of bundle adjustment (BA), "scale drift correction". Here "scale drift correction" means that BA can converge to the correct solution (up to a scale) even if the initial values of the camera pose translations and point feature positions are calculated using very different scale factors. This property together with other properties of BA makes it the best approach for monocular Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM), without considering the computational complexity. This naturally leads to the idea of using local BA and map joining to solve large-scale monocular SLAM problem, which is proposed in this paper. The local maps are built through Scale-Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) for feature detection and matching, random sample consensus (RANSAC) paradigm at different levels for robust outlier removal, and BA for optimization. To reduce the computational cost of the large-scale map building, the features in each local map are judiciously selected and then the local maps are combined using a recently developed 3D map joining algorithm. The proposed large-scale monocular SLAM algorithm is evaluated using a publicly available dataset with centimeter-level ground truth. ©2010 IEEE

    "A Novel Feature-Based Approach for Indoor Monocular SLAM"

    Camera tracking and the construction of a robust and accurate map in unknown environments are still challenging tasks in computer vision and robotic applications. Visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) along with Augmented Reality (AR) are two important applications, and their performance is entirely dependent on the accuracy of the camera tracking routine. This paper presents a novel feature-based approach for the monocular SLAM problem using a hand-held camera in room-sized workspaces with a maximum scene depth of 4–5 m. In the core of the proposed method, there is a Particle Filter (PF) responsible for the estimation of extrinsic parameters of the camera. In addition, contrary to key-frame based methods, the proposed system tracks the camera frame by frame and constructs a robust and accurate map incrementally. Moreover, the proposed algorithm initially constructs a metric sparse map. To this end, a chessboard pattern with a known cell size has been placed in front of the camera for a few frames. This enables the algorithm to accurately compute the pose of the camera and therefore, the depth of the primary detected natural feature points are easily calculated. Afterwards, camera pose estimation for each new incoming frame is carried out in a framework that is merely working with a set of visible natural landmarks. Moreover, to recover the depth of the newly detected landmarks, a delayed approach based on linear triangulation is used. The proposed method is applied to a realworld VGA quality video (640 × 480 pixels) where the translation error of the camera pose is less than 2 cm on average and the orientation error is less than 3 degrees, which indicates the effectiveness and accuracy of the developed algorithm

    Monocular graph SLAM with complexity reduction

    Abstract-We present a graph-based SLAM approach, using monocular vision and odometry, designed to operate on computationally constrained platforms. When computation and memory are limited, visual tracking becomes difficult or impossible, and map representation and update costs must remain low. Our system constructs a map of structured views using only weak temporal assumptions, and performs recognition and relative pose estimation over the set of views. Visual observations are fused with differential sensors in an incrementally optimized graph representation. Using variable elimination and constraint pruning, the graph complexity and storage is kept linear in explored space rather than in time. We evaluate performance on sequences with ground truth, and also compare to a standard graph SLAM approach
