Uniqueness of Normal Forms is Decidable for Shallow Term Rewrite Systems
Uniqueness of normal forms (UN=) is an important property of term rewrite systems. UN= is decidable for ground (i.e., variable-free) systems and undecidable in general. Recently it was shown to be decidable for linear, shallow systems. We generalize this previous result and show that this property is decidable for shallow rewrite systems, in contrast to confluence, reachability and other properties, which are all undecidable for flat systems. Our result is also optimal in some sense, since we prove that the UN= property is undecidable for two superclasses of flat systems: left-flat, left-linear systems in which right-hand sides are of depth at most two and right-flat, right-linear systems in which left-hand sides are of depth at most two
Termination of Rewriting with Right-Flat Rules Modulo Permutative Theories
We present decidability results for termination of classes of term rewriting
systems modulo permutative theories. Termination and innermost termination
modulo permutative theories are shown to be decidable for term rewrite systems
(TRS) whose right-hand side terms are restricted to be shallow (variables occur
at depth at most one) and linear (each variable occurs at most once). Innermost
termination modulo permutative theories is also shown to be decidable for
shallow TRS. We first show that a shallow TRS can be transformed into a flat
(only variables and constants occur at depth one) TRS while preserving
termination and innermost termination. The decidability results are then proved
by showing that (a) for right-flat right-linear (flat) TRS, non-termination
(respectively, innermost non-termination) implies non-termination starting from
flat terms, and (b) for right-flat TRS, the existence of non-terminating
derivations starting from a given term is decidable. On the negative side, we
show PSPACE-hardness of termination and innermost termination for shallow
right-linear TRS, and undecidability of termination for flat TRS.Comment: 20 page
Model Checking Classes of Metric LTL Properties of Object-Oriented Real-Time Maude Specifications
This paper presents a transformational approach for model checking two
important classes of metric temporal logic (MTL) properties, namely, bounded
response and minimum separation, for nonhierarchical object-oriented Real-Time
Maude specifications. We prove the correctness of our model checking
algorithms, which terminate under reasonable non-Zeno-ness assumptions when the
reachable state space is finite. These new model checking features have been
integrated into Real-Time Maude, and are used to analyze a network of medical
devices and a 4-way traffic intersection system.Comment: In Proceedings RTRTS 2010, arXiv:1009.398
Rewrite based Verification of XML Updates
We consider problems of access control for update of XML documents. In the
context of XML programming, types can be viewed as hedge automata, and static
type checking amounts to verify that a program always converts valid source
documents into also valid output documents. Given a set of update operations we
are particularly interested by checking safety properties such as preservation
of document types along any sequence of updates. We are also interested by the
related policy consistency problem, that is detecting whether a sequence of
authorized operations can simulate a forbidden one. We reduce these questions
to type checking problems, solved by computing variants of hedge automata
characterizing the set of ancestors and descendants of the initial document
type for the closure of parameterized rewrite rules
Identities in the Algebra of Partial Maps
We consider the identities of a variety of semigroup-related algebras modelling the algebra of partial maps. We show that the identities are intimately related to a weak semigroup deductive system and we show that the equational theory is decidable. We do this by giving a term rewriting system for the variety. We then show that this variety has many subvarieties whose equational theory interprets the full uniform word problem for semigroups and consequently are undecidable. As a corollary it is shown that the equational theory of Clifford semigroups whose natural order is a semilattice is undecidable
CoLoR: a Coq library on well-founded rewrite relations and its application to the automated verification of termination certificates
Termination is an important property of programs; notably required for
programs formulated in proof assistants. It is a very active subject of
research in the Turing-complete formalism of term rewriting systems, where many
methods and tools have been developed over the years to address this problem.
Ensuring reliability of those tools is therefore an important issue. In this
paper we present a library formalizing important results of the theory of
well-founded (rewrite) relations in the proof assistant Coq. We also present
its application to the automated verification of termination certificates, as
produced by termination tools
Controlled Term Rewriting
International audienceMotivated by the problem of verification of imperative tree transformation programs, we study the combination, called controlled term rewriting systems (CntTRS), of term rewriting rules with con- straints selecting the possible rewrite positions. These constraints are specified, for each rewrite rule, by a selection automaton which defines a set of positions in a term based on tree automata computations. We show that reachability is PSPACE-complete for so-called monotonic CntTRS, such that the size of every left-hand-side of every rewrite rule is larger or equal to the size of the corresponding right-hand-side, and also for the class of context-free non-collapsing CntTRS, which transform Context-Free (CF) tree language into CF tree languages. When allowing size-reducing rules, reachability becomes undecidable, even for flat CntTRS (both sides of rewrite rules are of depth at most one) when restricting to words (i.e. function symbols have arity at most one), and for ground CntTRS (rewrite rules have no variables). We also consider a restricted version of the control such that a position is selected if the sequence of symbols on the path from that position to the root of the tree belongs to a given regular language. This restriction enables decision results in the above cases
