    Boosting Face Presentation Attack Detection in Multi-Spectral Videos Through Score Fusion of Wavelet Partition Images

    Presentation attack detection (PAD) algorithms have become an integral requirement for the secure usage of face recognition systems. As face recognition algorithms and applications increase from constrained to unconstrained environments and in multispectral scenarios, presentation attack detection algorithms must also increase their scope and effectiveness. It is important to realize that the PAD algorithms are not only effective for one environment or condition but rather be generalizable to a multitude of variabilities that are presented to a face recognition algorithm. With this motivation, as the first contribution, the article presents a unified PAD algorithm for different kinds of attacks such as printed photos, a replay of video, 3D masks, silicone masks, and wax faces. The proposed algorithm utilizes a combination of wavelet decomposed raw input images from sensor and face region data to detect whether the input image is bonafide or attacked. The second contribution of the article is the collection of a large presentation attack database in the NIR spectrum, containing images from individuals of two ethnicities. The database contains 500 print attack videos which comprise approximately 1,00,000 frames collectively in the NIR spectrum. Extensive evaluation of the algorithm on NIR images as well as visible spectrum images obtained from existing benchmark databases shows that the proposed algorithm yields state-of-the-art results and surpassed several complex and state-of-the-art algorithms. For instance, on benchmark datasets, namely CASIA-FASD, Replay-Attack, and MSU-MFSD, the proposed algorithm achieves a maximum error of 0.92% which is significantly lower than state-of-the-art attack detection algorithms

    Feature binding of MPEG-7 Visual Descriptors Using Chaotic Series

    Due to advanced segmentation and tracking algorithms, a video can be divided into numerous objects. Segmentation and tracking algorithms output different low-level object features, resulting in a high-dimensional feature vector per object. The challenge is to generate feature vector of objects which can be mapped to human understandable description, such as object labels, e.g., person, car. MPEG-7 provides visual descriptors to describe video contents. However, generally the MPEG-7 visual descriptors are highly redundant, and the feature coefficients in these descriptors need to be pre-processed for domain specific application. Ideal case would be if MPEG-7 visual descriptor based feature vector, can be processed similar to some functional simulations of human brain activity. There has been a established link between the analysis of temporal human brain oscillatory signals and chaotic dynamics from the electroencephalography (EEG) of the brain neurons. Neural signals in limited brain activities are found to be behaviorally relevant (previously appeared to be noise) and can be simulated using chaotic series. Chaotic series is referred to as either a finite-difference or an ordinary differential equation, which presents non-random, irregular fluctuations of parameter values over time in a dynamical system. The dynamics in a chaotic series can be high - or low -dimensional, and the dimensionality can be deduced from the topological dimension of the attractor of the chaotic series. An attractor is manifested by the tendency of a non-linear finite difference equation or an ordinary differential equation, under various but delimited conditions, to go to a reproducible active state, and stay there. We propose a feature binding method, using chaotic series, to generate a new feature vector, C-MP7 , to describe video objects. The proposed method considers MPEG-7 visual descriptor coefficients as dynamical systems. Dynamical systems are excited (similar to neuronal excitation) with either high- or low-dimensional chaotic series, and then histogram-based clustering is applied on the simulated chaotic series coefficients to generate C-MP7 . The proposed feature binding offers better feature vector with high-dimensional chaotic series simulation than with low-dimensional chaotic series, over MPEG-7 visual descriptor based feature vector. Diverse video objects are grouped in four generic classes (e.g., has [barbelow]person, has [barbelow]group [barbelow]of [barbelow]persons, has [barbelow]vehicle, and has [barbelow]unknown ) to observe how well C-MP7 describes different video objects compared to MPEG-7 feature vector. In C-MP7 , with high dimensional chaotic series simulation, 1). descriptor coefficients are reduced dynamically up to 37.05% compared to 10% in MPEG-7 , 2) higher variance is achieved than MPEG-7 , 3) multi-class discriminant analysis of C-MP7 with Fisher-criteria shows increased binary class separation for clustered video objects than that of MPEG-7 , and 4) C-MP7 , specifically provides good clustering of video objects for has [barbelow]vehicle class against other classes. To test C-MP7 in an application, we deploy a combination of multiple binary classifiers for video object classification. Related work on video object classification use non-MPEG-7 features. We specifically observe classification of challenging surveillance video objects, e.g., incomplete objects, partial occlusion, background over lapping, scale and resolution variant objects, indoor / outdoor lighting variations. C-MP7 is used to train different classes of video objects. Object classification accuracy is verified with both low-dimensional and high-dimensional chaotic series based feature binding for C-MP7 . Testing of diverse video objects with high-dimensional chaotic series simulation shows, 1) classification accuracy significantly improves on average, 83% compared to the 62% with MPEG-7 , 2) excellent clustering of vehicle objects leads to above 99% accuracy for only vehicles against all other objects, and 3) with diverse video objects, including objects from poor segmentation. C-MP7 is more robust as a feature vector in classification than MPEG-7 . Initial results on sub-group classification for male and female video objects in has [barbelow]person class are also presentated as subjective observations.     Seamless Multimodal Biometrics for Continuous Personalised Wellbeing Monitoring

    Artificially intelligent perception is increasingly present in the lives of every one of us. Vehicles are no exception, (...) In the near future, pattern recognition will have an even stronger role in vehicles, as self-driving cars will require automated ways to understand what is happening around (and within) them and act accordingly. (...) This doctoral work focused on advancing in-vehicle sensing through the research of novel computer vision and pattern recognition methodologies for both biometrics and wellbeing monitoring. The main focus has been on electrocardiogram (ECG) biometrics, a trait well-known for its potential for seamless driver monitoring. Major efforts were devoted to achieving improved performance in identification and identity verification in off-the-person scenarios, well-known for increased noise and variability. Here, end-to-end deep learning ECG biometric solutions were proposed and important topics were addressed such as cross-database and long-term performance, waveform relevance through explainability, and interlead conversion. Face biometrics, a natural complement to the ECG in seamless unconstrained scenarios, was also studied in this work. The open challenges of masked face recognition and interpretability in biometrics were tackled in an effort to evolve towards algorithms that are more transparent, trustworthy, and robust to significant occlusions. Within the topic of wellbeing monitoring, improved solutions to multimodal emotion recognition in groups of people and activity/violence recognition in in-vehicle scenarios were proposed. At last, we also proposed a novel way to learn template security within end-to-end models, dismissing additional separate encryption processes, and a self-supervised learning approach tailored to sequential data, in order to ensure data security and optimal performance.     Image Classification of High Variant Objects in Fast Industrial Applications

    Recent advances in machine learning and image processing have expanded the applications of computer vision in many industries. In industrial applications, image classification is a crucial task since high variant objects present difficult problems because of their variety and constant change in attributes. Computer vision algorithms can function effectively in complex environments, working alongside human operators to enhance efficiency and data accuracy. However, there are still many industries facing difficulties with automation that have not yet been properly solved and put into practice. They have the need for more accurate, convenient, and faster methods. These solutions drove my interest in combining multiple learning strategies as well as sensors and image formats to enable the use of computer vision for these applications. The motivation for this work is to answer a number of research questions that aim to mitigate current problems in hinder their practical application. This work therefore aims to present solutions that contribute to enabling these solutions. I demonstrate why standard methods cannot simply be applied to an existing problem. Each method must be customized to the specific application scenario in order to obtain a working solution. One example is face recognition where the classification performance is crucial for the system’s ability to correctly identify individuals. Additional features would allow higher accuracy, robustness, safety, and make presentation attacks more difficult. The detection of attempted attacks is critical for the acceptance of such systems and significantly impacts the applicability of biometrics. Another application is tailgating detection at automated entrance gates. Especially in high security environments it is important to prevent that authorized persons can take an unauthorized person into the secured area. There is a plethora of technology that seem potentially suitable but there are several practical factors to consider that increase or decrease applicability depending which method is used. The third application covered in this thesis is the classification of textiles when they are not spread out. Finding certain properties on them is complex, as these properties might be inside a fold, or differ in appearance because of shadows and position. The first part of this work provides in-depth analysis of the three individual applications, including background information that is needed to understand the research topic and its proposed solutions. It includes the state of the art in the area for all researched applications. In the second part of this work, methods are presented to facilitate or enable the industrial applicability of the presented applications. New image databases are initially presented for all three application areas. In the case of biometrics, three methods that identify and improve specific performance parameters are shown. It will be shown how melanin face pigmentation (MFP) features can be extracted and used for classification in face recognition and PAD applications. In the entrance control application, the focus is on the sensor information with six methods being presented in detail. This includes the use of thermal images to detect humans based on their body heat, depth images in form of RGB-D images and 2D image series, as well as data of a floor mounted sensor-grid. For textile defect detection several methods and a novel classification procedure, in free-fall is presented. In summary, this work examines computer vision applications for their practical industrial applicability and presents solutions to mitigate the identified problems. In contrast to previous work, the proposed approaches are (a) effective in improving classification performance (b) fast in execution and (c) easily integrated into existing processes and equipment

    Unsupervised Selection and Estimation of Non-Gaussian Mixtures for High Dimensional Data Analysis

    Lately, the enormous generation of databases in almost every aspect of life has created a great demand for new, powerful tools for turning data into useful information. Therefore, researchers were encouraged to explore and develop new machine learning ideas and methods. Mixture models are one of the machine learning techniques receiving considerable attention due to their ability to handle efficiently and effectively multidimensional data. Generally, four critical issues have to be addressed when adopting mixture models in high dimensional spaces: (1) choice of the probability density functions, (2) estimation of the mixture parameters, (3) automatic determination of the number of components M in the mixture, and (4) determination of what features best discriminate among the different components. The main goal of this thesis is to summarize all these challenging interrelated problems in one unified model. In most of the applications, the Gaussian density is used in mixture modeling of data. Although a Gaussian mixture may provide a reasonable approximation to many real-world distributions, it is certainly not always the best approximation especially in computer vision and image processing applications where we often deal with non-Gaussian data. Therefore, we propose to use three highly flexible distributions: the generalized Gaussian distribution (GGD), the asymmetric Gaussian distribution (AGD), and the asymmetric generalized Gaussian distribution (AGGD). We are motivated by the fact that these distributions are able to fit many distributional shapes and then can be considered as a useful class of flexible models to address several problems and applications involving measurements and features having well-known marked deviation from the Gaussian shape. Recently, researches have shown that model selection and parameter learning are highly dependent and should be performed simultaneously. For this purpose, many approaches have been suggested. The vast majority of these approaches can be classified, from a computational point of view, into two classes: deterministic and stochastic methods. Deterministic methods estimate the model parameters for a set of candidate models using the Expectation-Maximization (EM) framework, then choose the model that maximizes a model selection criterion. Stochastic methods such as Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) can be used in order to sample from the full a posteriori distribution with M considered unknown. Hence, in this thesis, we propose three learning techniques capable of automatically determining model complexity while learning its parameters. First, we incorporate a Minimum Message Length (MML) penalty in the model learning step performed using the EM algorithm. Our second approach employs the Rival Penalized EM (RPEM) algorithm which is able to select an appropriate number of densities by fading out the redundant densities from a density mixture. Last but not least, we incorporate the nonparametric aspect of mixture models by assuming a countably infinite number of components and using Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulations for the estimation of the posterior distributions. Hence, the difficulty of choosing the appropriate number of clusters is sidestepped by assuming that there are an infinite number of mixture components. Another essential issue in the case of statistical modeling in general and finite mixtures in particular is feature selection (i.e. identification of the relevant or discriminative features describing the data) especially in the case of high-dimensional data. Indeed, feature selection has been shown to be a crucial step in several image processing, computer vision and pattern recognition applications not only because it speeds up learning but also because it improves model accuracy and generalization. Moreover, the learning of the mixture parameters ( i.e. both model selection and parameters estimation) is greatly affected by the quality of the features used. Hence, in this thesis, we are trying to solve the feature selection problem in unsupervised learning by casting it as an estimation problem, thus avoiding any combinatorial search. Finally, the effectiveness of our approaches is evaluated by applying them to different computer vision and image processing applications

    Derivation of forest inventory parameters from high-resolution satellite imagery for the Thunkel area, Northern Mongolia. A comparative study on various satellite sensors and data analysis techniques.

    With the demise of the Soviet Union and the transition to a market economy starting in the 1990s, Mongolia has been experiencing dramatic changes resulting in social and economic disparities and an increasing strain on its natural resources. The situation is exacerbated by a changing climate, the erosion of forestry related administrative structures, and a lack of law enforcement activities. Mongolia’s forests have been afflicted with a dramatic increase in degradation due to human and natural impacts such as overexploitation and wildfire occurrences. In addition, forest management practices are far from being sustainable. In order to provide useful information on how to viably and effectively utilise the forest resources in the future, the gathering and analysis of forest related data is pivotal. Although a National Forest Inventory was conducted in 2016, very little reliable and scientifically substantiated information exists related to a regional or even local level. This lack of detailed information warranted a study performed in the Thunkel taiga area in 2017 in cooperation with the GIZ. In this context, we hypothesise that (i) tree species and composition can be identified utilising the aerial imagery, (ii) tree height can be extracted from the resulting canopy height model with accuracies commensurate with field survey measurements, and (iii) high-resolution satellite imagery is suitable for the extraction of tree species, the number of trees, and the upscaling of timber volume and basal area based on the spectral properties. The outcomes of this study illustrate quite clearly the potential of employing UAV imagery for tree height extraction (R2 of 0.9) as well as for species and crown diameter determination. However, in a few instances, the visual interpretation of the aerial photographs were determined to be superior to the computer-aided automatic extraction of forest attributes. In addition, imagery from various satellite sensors (e.g. Sentinel-2, RapidEye, WorldView-2) proved to be excellently suited for the delineation of burned areas and the assessment of tree vigour. Furthermore, recently developed sophisticated classifying approaches such as Support Vector Machines and Random Forest appear to be tailored for tree species discrimination (Overall Accuracy of 89%). Object-based classification approaches convey the impression to be highly suitable for very high-resolution imagery, however, at medium scale, pixel-based classifiers outperformed the former. It is also suggested that high radiometric resolution bears the potential to easily compensate for the lack of spatial detectability in the imagery. Quite surprising was the occurrence of dark taiga species in the riparian areas being beyond their natural habitat range. The presented results matrix and the interpretation key have been devised as a decision tool and/or a vademecum for practitioners. In consideration of future projects and to facilitate the improvement of the forest inventory database, the establishment of permanent sampling plots in the Mongolian taigas is strongly advised.2021-06-0
