    Smart Power Grid Synchronization With Fault Tolerant Nonlinear Estimation

    Effective real-time state estimation is essential for smart grid synchronization, as electricity demand continues to grow, and renewable energy resources increase their penetration into the grid. In order to provide a more reliable state estimation technique to address the problem of bad data in the PMU-based power synchronization, this paper presents a novel nonlinear estimation framework to dynamically track frequency, voltage magnitudes and phase angles. Instead of directly analyzing in abc coordinate frame, symmetrical component transformation is employed to separate the positive, negative, and zero sequence networks. Then, Clarke\u27s transformation is used to transform the sequence networks into the αβ stationary coordinate frame, which leads to system model formulation. A novel fault tolerant extended Kalman filter based real-time estimation framework is proposed for smart grid synchronization with noisy bad data measurements. Computer simulation studies have demonstrated that the proposed fault tolerant extended Kalman filter (FTEKF) provides more accurate voltage synchronization results than the extended Kalman filter (EKF). The proposed approach has been implemented with dSPACE DS1103 and National Instruments CompactRIO hardware platforms. Computer simulation and hardware instrumentation results have shown the potential applications of FTEKF in smart grid synchronization

    Grid Voltage Synchronization for Unbalanced Voltages Using the Energy Operator

    This paper presents a novel synchronization technique which can identify the grid voltage frequency and phase angle under unbalanced grid voltage conditions. The method combines the features of two different energy operator schemes: the basic one for estimating the frequency of the grid voltages and the cross-energy operator for phase tracking. Using a moving data window of five samples the algorithm can track the fundamental frequency and phase angle quickly and accurately. The paper discusses the fundamental principles of the method, highlights its features and filter requirements in implementation. An experimental implementation of this method is presented which validates its performance for practical operation. The ability of the proposed method to enable a STATCOM riding-through unbalanced grid voltage condition is verified by the results from a power network simulation study

    Exploiting generative adversarial networks as an oversampling method for fault diagnosis of an industrial robotic manipulator

    Data-driven machine learning techniques play an important role in fault diagnosis, safety, and maintenance of the industrial robotic manipulator. However, these methods require data that, more often that not, are hard to obtain, especially data collected from fault condition states and, without enough and appropriated (balanced) data, no acceptable performance should be expected. Generative adversarial networks (GAN) are receiving a significant interest, especially in the image analysis field due to their outstanding generative capabilities. This paper investigates whether or not GAN can be used as an oversampling tool to compensate for an unbalanced data set in an industrial manipulator fault diagnosis task. A comprehensive empirical analysis is performed taking into account six different scenarios for mitigating the unbalanced data, including classical under and oversampling (SMOTE) methods. In all of these, a wavelet packet transform is used for feature generation while a random forest is used for fault classification. Aspects such as loss functions, learning curves, random input distributions, data shuffling, and initial conditions were also considered. A non-parametric statistical test of hypotheses reveals that all GAN based fault-diagnosis outperforms both under and oversampling classical methods while, within GAN based methods, an average accuracy difference as high as 1.68% can be achieved.FCT-through IDMEC, under LAETA, project UIDB/50022/2020.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Fault Management in DC Microgrids:A Review of Challenges, Countermeasures, and Future Research Trends

    The significant benefits of DC microgrids have instigated extensive efforts to be an alternative network as compared to conventional AC power networks. Although their deployment is ever-growing, multiple challenges still occurred for the protection of DC microgrids to efficiently design, control, and operate the system for the islanded mode and grid-tied mode. Therefore, there are extensive research activities underway to tackle these issues. The challenge arises from the sudden exponential increase in DC fault current, which must be extinguished in the absence of the naturally occurring zero crossings, potentially leading to sustained arcs. This paper presents cut-age and state-of-the-art issues concerning the fault management of DC microgrids. It provides an account of research in areas related to fault management of DC microgrids, including fault detection, location, identification, isolation, and reconfiguration. In each area, a comprehensive review has been carried out to identify the fault management of DC microgrids. Finally, future trends and challenges regarding fault management in DC-microgrids are also discussed

    A Fast Diagnosis Method for Both IGBT Faults and Current Sensor Faults in Grid-Tied Three-Phase Inverters With Two Current Sensors

This article considers fault detection in the case of a three-phase three-wire (3P3W) inverter, when only two current sensors are used to save cost or due to a faulty current sensor. With two current sensors, there is no current method addressing the diagnosis of both IGBT open-circuit (OC) faults and current sensor faults. In order to solve this problem, this article proposes a method which innovatively combines two kinds of diagnosis variables, line voltage deviations and phase voltage deviations. The unique faulty characteristics of diagnosis variables for each fault are extracted and utilized to distinguish the fault. Using an average model, the method only needs the signals already available in the controller. Both IGBT OC faults and current sensor faults can be detected quickly in inverter mode and rectifier mode, so that the converter can be protected in a timely way to avoid further damages. In addition, error-adaptive thresholds are adopted to make the method robust. Effects such as system unbalance are analyzed to ensure that the method is robust and feasible. Simulation and experimental results are used to verify and validate the effectiveness of the method
