DVB-T Positioning with a One Shot Receiver

    Get PDF
In this paper a one shot receiver for DVB-T positioning is presented. DVB-T SFN signals can be used as Signals-of-Opportunity in urban environment to assist GNSS in case the GNSS-only positioning shows degraded performance. The normal mechanism of DVB-T positioning involves a tracking stage to refine the coarse delay estimation obtained by the acquisition stage. However due to the high SNR of DVB-T signals, the delay estimation can be refined by some simple interpolation methods with lower complexity and power consumption. Two different interpolation methods, linear interpolation and sinc interpolation, are analysed in the paper. Simulation results show that the one shot receiver proposed in this paper behaves as a tracking-based receiver, but exhibits a lower complexit

Cooperative localization by dual foot-mounted inertial sensors and inter-agent ranging

The implementation challenges of cooperative localization by dual foot-mounted inertial sensors and inter-agent ranging are discussed and work on the subject is reviewed. System architecture and sensor fusion are identified as key challenges. A partially decentralized system architecture based on step-wise inertial navigation and step-wise dead reckoning is presented. This architecture is argued to reduce the computational cost and required communication bandwidth by around two orders of magnitude while only giving negligible information loss in comparison with a naive centralized implementation. This makes a joint global state estimation feasible for up to a platoon-sized group of agents. Furthermore, robust and low-cost sensor fusion for the considered setup, based on state space transformation and marginalization, is presented. The transformation and marginalization are used to give the necessary flexibility for presented sampling based updates for the inter-agent ranging and ranging free fusion of the two feet of an individual agent. Finally, characteristics of the suggested implementation are demonstrated with simulations and a real-time system implementation.Comment: 14 page

Development of a 2-dimensional angulation algorithm target locating error estimation technique

    Get PDF
A multiangulation (MANG) system determines an emitting target location using the angle of arrival (AOA) measurement estimated from its emission with an angulation algorithm. Prior to deployment of the system, it is important to know if the horizontal coordinate (HC) root mean square error (RMSE)s obtained by the system at certain target locations given an AOA error are within approved standards set by the international regulatory bodies. For this reason, a MANG system target locating error estimation technique based on Euclidean geometrical analysis and linear regression is proposed in this paper. This is to assist in the systematic determination and prediction of the HC RMSE obtained by the angulation algorithm of the MANG system. The proposed technique is validated by comparison with the Monte Carlo (MC) simulation at some randomly selected target locations using a square receiving station (RS) configuration. Result comparison shows that the proposed technique predicts the target HC RMSE obtained by the angulation algorithm within a system coverage of 10 km by 10 km with a prediction accuracy of about ±5 m.Keywords: Multiangulation system; Angle of arrival: Angulation Algorithm; Error prediction; Linear regressio

OGSR: A Low Complexity Galileo Software Receiver using Orthogonal Data and Pilot Channels

    Get PDF
To improve localisation accuracy and multipath rejection, the Galileo-OS signal offers a new modulation with efficient power distribution technique between the two data and pilot navigation components. To achieve the full benefits of this modulation, a robust acquisition and tracking methods must be deployed. For example, using two parallel correlation channels to acquire these data and pilot will gain 3dB over using a single channel acquisition correlating with either one of them. However, dual channel SW receivers cost more processing overheads. In this paper, the authors propose to orthogonalise the received data and pilot signals so to enable their acquisition in a single correlation channel bandpass sampling receiver. Our simulation results, using Simulink, prove that OGSR performance is maintained (preserving the 3dB gain) with less processing time while the implementation complexity is reduced by 50%

Backscatter Transponder Based on Frequency Selective Surface for FMCW Radar Applications

    Get PDF
This paper describes an actively-controlled frequency selective surface (FSS) to implement a backscatter transponder. The FSS is composed by dipoles loaded with switching PIN diodes. The transponder exploits the change in the radar cross section (RCS) of the FSS with the bias of the diodes to modulate the backscattered response of the tag to the FMCW radar. The basic operation theory of the system is explained here. An experimental setup based on a commercial X-band FMCW radar working as a reader is proposed to measure the transponders. The transponder response can be distinguished from the interference of non-modulated clutter, modulating the transponder’s RCS. Some FSS with different number of dipoles are studied, as a proof of concept. Experimental results at several distances are provided
