Synthesizing framework models for symbolic execution

    Get PDF
Symbolic execution is a powerful program analysis technique, but it is difficult to apply to programs built using frameworks such as Swing and Android, because the framework code itself is hard to symbolically execute. The standard solution is to manually create a framework model that can be symbolically executed, but developing and maintaining a model is difficult and error-prone. In this paper, we present Pasket, a new system that takes a first step toward automatically generating Java framework models to support symbolic execution. Pasket's focus is on creating models by instantiating design patterns. Pasket takes as input class, method, and type information from the framework API, together with tutorial programs that exercise the framework. From these artifacts and Pasket's internal knowledge of design patterns, Pasket synthesizes a framework model whose behavior on the tutorial programs matches that of the original framework. We evaluated Pasket by synthesizing models for subsets of Swing and Android. Our results show that the models derived by Pasket are sufficient to allow us to use off-the-shelf symbolic execution tools to analyze Java programs that rely on frameworks.National Science Foundation (U.S.) (CCF-1139021)National Science Foundation (U.S.) (CCF-1139056)National Science Foundation (U.S.) (CCF-1161775

The worldwide use of computers : a description of main trends

    Get PDF
This paper examines some of the main findings from the IEA Computers in Education survey. The results show that with respect to the future of computers in education there is reason for optimism as well as for pessimism. The optimistic part of the story is that new technologies in the form of computers are nowadays available for many schools in most so-called developed countries, and that despite the complexity of this innovation educational practitioners and students are still very enthusiastic about this technology. The pessimistic part is that there is still much inequity of access to computers. Once computers are available they tend to be used most frequently as an add-on to the existing curriculum. It is probably this lack of integration of computers in existing curricula which is most challenging in determining our agenda for the future

Clinical pathology of parrots : auto tutorial programs

    Get PDF
At the Veterinary Medicine Programme there is very little time allotted paid to exotic pets, which include psittacine birds, compared to other kinds of animals. However parrots are quite often seen as patients in the animal clinics in Sweden currently. Many veterinarians have unfortunately not enough knowledge to take care of such patients in a proper manner. The aim of this degree project was to put together a CD with information about hematology and clinical chemistry in parrots. The information is supposed to be easily available and designed for interested veterinary students and veterinarians. The CD also includes information about how to collect blood samples and common avian diseases. It consists of five Power Point presentations: Collecting Samples for Testing, Avian Hematology, Avian Biochemistry, Common Avian Diseases and Avian Cases. The language is English to make this project also available for foreign students and veterinarians.På veterinärutbildningen vid Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet ägnas knappt någon tid alls åt de udda sällskapsdjuren, dit papegojor räknas, i jämförelse med andra djurslag.

Adjustment and Developmental Outcomes of Students Engaged in Service Learning

    Get PDF
In an effort to better understand the psychosocial and adjustment processes experienced by college students engaged in service learning, 22 randomly selected reflection journals were content-analyzed from a class of 44 child development students who had been engaged in service learning in a variety settings. Three of the themes that emerged in the journals involved students: feeling awkward during the first visits; feeling uncertain about redirecting children\u27s misbehavior; and having ambivalent feelings when bringing their service learning experiences to an end. The coping mechanisms and resources upon which students draw to successfully grow beyond these initial challenges are discussed, as well as practical suggestions for facilitators of the service learning experience

Classical Estimation of Multivariate Markov-Switching Models using MSVARlib

    Get PDF
This paper introduces an upgraded version of MSVARlib, a Gauss and Ox- Gauss compliant library, focusing on Multivariate Markov Switching Regressions in their most general specification. This new set of procedures allows to estimate, through classical optimization methods, models belonging to the MSI(M)(AH)-VARX ``intercept regime dependent'' family. This research enhances the first package MSVARlib 1.1, which has been deeply inspired by the works of Hamilton and Krolzig. Not to mention the extension to a generalized multivariate regression framework, it notably augments the range of models with a possibly unlimited finite number of Markov states, offers automatic or manual intialization procedures and adds new statistical tests. The first part of this article provides the basic theoretical grounds of the related Markov-switching models. Following sections give some illustrations of the programs through univariate and multivariate examples. One is based on a non-linear reading of the american unemployment rate. A second study is focused on coincident stochastic models of US recessions and slowdowns. The paper concludes on possible extensions and new applications. Detailed guidelines in appendices and tutorial programs are provided to help the reader handling the Gauss package and the joined replication files.Multivariate Markov-Switching Regressions, Hidden markov Models, Non linear regressions, Open source Gauss library, Business cycle, EM algorithm, Kittagawa-Hamilton Filtering, Recession Detection Models, MSVAR, MS-VAR, Hamilton's Model, Krolzig MSVAR library,Filtered probabilities, Smoothed probabilities.
