TRUST MANAGEMENT – AN INFORMATION SYSTEMS PERSPECTIVE

    Get PDF
The focus of the Information Systems (IS) research on trust has been on the perception of trust and explaining the concept in terms of its antecedents. The merits of this descriptive and explanatory knowledge notwithstanding, the usefulness and applicability of this knowledge for organizations that aim at actively influencing their trust position is limited. In light of recent public scandals in areas such as social media, car manufacturing or financial services, organizations require an understanding of how customer trust can be managed using contemporary information systems solutions. In this paper we propose trust management as an IS theme of increasing relevance and draw upon extant research in IS, psychology, and marketing to bridge the gap between topics such as risk management, compliance management and governance on the one hand and trust management on the other. We utilize Botsman’s concept of uncertainty as a proxy for customer trust to bring together organizational approaches that can objectively reduce uncertainty linked to an organization, its processes, products, and services with the customer’s perception of this uncertainty. We contribute to the further maturity of trust management by providing new foundations and providing explicit advice on how to improve trust in organizations

This paper analyses Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Knowledge Management (KM) and focuses primarily on examining to what degree AI can help companies in their efforts to handle information and manage knowledge effectively. A search was carried out for relevant electronic bibliographic databases and reference lists of relevant review articles. Articles were screened and the eligibility was based on participants, procedures, comparisons, outcomes (PICO) model, and criteria for PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews). The results reveal that knowledge management and AI are interrelated fields as both are intensely connected to knowledge; the difference reflects in how – while AI offers machines the ability to learn, KM offers a platform to better understand knowledge. The research findings further point out that communication, trust, information systems, incentives or rewards, and the structure of an organization; are related to knowledge sharing in organizations. This systematic literature review is the first to throw light on KM practices & the knowledge cycle and how the integration of AI aids knowledge management systems, enterprise performance & distribution of knowledge within the organization. The outcomes offer a better understanding of efficient and effective knowledge resource management for organizational advantage. Future research is necessary on smart assistant systems thus providing social benefits that strengthen competitive advantage. This study indicates that organizations must take note of definite KM leadership traits and organizational arrangements to achieve stable performance through KM

What Do Organizations Learn From Conflict? A Grounded Meta-Analysis Approach to Developing an Integrated Conflict System Roadmap

    Get PDF
Organizational systems from a variety of fields and industries have begun to investigate and evaluate the skills, strategies, and lessons learned from conflict. Yet, many of the findings are isolated to their specific organizations or industries, decreasing the impact of the newly emerging knowledge. Due to the lack of interconnectedness in the fields and industries, this study poses the following research question: How do organizations develop skills and strategies to respond to internal and external conflict within systems? The purpose of this grounded meta-analysis was to discover what skills and strategies organizations learn through the process of managing conflict and to utilize the findings to develop a comprehensive integrated conflict development model to aid organizations in the development of their systems. The study utilized Hossler and Scalese-Love’s (1989) grounded meta-analysis methodology. Theories such as systems theory, social constructivism, and frame analysis were used to inform the development of the new theoretical framework: the roadmap for organizational conflict management systems (ROC framework). From an initial sample of 33 reports from 1990 to the present indicating conflict, I reviewed 12 executive reports and publications relating to conflict in organizations (before, during, or after conflict). Data analysis produced a framework including a holistic, transparent, and innovative context for learning, using strategies of communication, knowledge sharing, support, and collaboration. The resulting ROC framework is presented in the form of a chart to assist organizations in developing an integrated conflict management system resulting in organizational effectiveness, cooperative conflict management, and a culture of openness and trust

Abstract An Empirical Study on the Impacts of the Knowledge Sharing Intention on the Use of Knowledge Management Systems. - The Comparable Analysis between Public and Private Sectors in the Maritime and Port - Kim, ChulHyun Department of Shipping Management The Graduate School, Korea Maritime University (Directed by Professor Chang, MyungHee) Recently, the knowledge management has been applied extensively in public organizations for their competitiveness in rapidly changing environment. Otherwise the cognizance on necessity of the knowledge management and earlier studies are insufficient, although infrastructure or tools like groupware, intranet for constructing and operating the knowledge management systems are constructed in the maritime sectors. This study confirms factors for knowledge sharing intention in the whole, public and private sectors of maritime and port. And this paper reveals that how does knowledge sharing intention effect the use of the knowledge management systems by empirical analysis in the whole, public and private sectors of the maritime and port. Also, this study is to provide differential guidelines for organizations considering the introduction of the knowledge management systems and confirm the differences through the comparative study between public and private sector of maritime and port. The factors on the knowledge sharing intention as support of CEO, the sense of self-worth, the trust among colleagues, the trust towards executives and incentives and the use of knowledge management systems are assorted through the literature reviews. The survey were sent to each of these 4 organizations implementation of knowledge management systems, department of Ministry of Maritime Affairs & Fisheries, Korean Container Terminal Authority within public organizations and Hanjin shipping, Hyundai Merchant Marine within private corporations, with 320 responses retruned (89 percent response rate). The results through statistical analyses are as follows: First, the support of CEO was not valid statistically on the knowledge sharing intention and the use of knowledge management systems in the whole, public and private sector of maritime and port. The reason are as follows1) The results of the knowledge management systems did not exceed expectation to CEO in the maritime and port sectors. 2) The groupware could be a role as knowledge management systems in the field, the use of the knowledge management systems was not essential to knowledge workers in the maritime and port sectors. Second, the sense of self-worth effects the knowledge sharing intention in the whole, public and private sectors of maritime and port. Third, the trust among colleagues and the trust towards executives effect the knowledge sharing intention in the whole, public and private sectors of maritime and port. The trust among colleagues effect the knowledge sharing intention in the public and private sectors of maritime and port. However, the relation between the knowledge sharing intention and the trust towards executives is not valid statistically in the public and private sectors of maritime and port. The result that the trust between demanders and suppliers influences the knowledge sharing intention and also find out that the knowledge management systems is drawing for the knowledge sharing among colleagues in the maritime and port sector. Fourth, that the incentives are not valid statistically on the knowledge sharing intention and use of the knowledge management systems in the whole sectors of maritime and port. Because the knowledge management systems was introduced during short-term and the effective incentives for the knowledge management were not settled yet. In the comparative analysis between public and private sectors, the incentives effect the knowledge sharing intention in the private sector. This result shows that the efficient system for incentives is operated in private sectors more than public sectors. Finally, that the knowledge sharing intention effects the use of knowledge management system in the whole, public and private sectors of maritime and port. The result of this study would be applied as a basic idea to seek the plan of the promotion through the knowledge management systems for the future by addressing the problems on the use of the knowledge management systems to users in the maritime and port sectors. Also, this study suggests proper methods for introduction of the knowledge management systems to corporations preparing the systems by addressing influential factors for increasing use of the knowledge management systems in the maritime and port sectors. Networks and trust: systems for understanding and supporting internet security

    Get PDF
Includes bibliographical references.2022 Fall. This dissertation takes a systems-level view of the multitude of existing trust management systems to make sense of when, where and how (or, in some cases, if) each is best utilized. Trust is a belief by one person that by transacting with another person (or organization) within a specific context, a positive outcome will result. Trust serves as a heuristic that enables us to simplify the dozens decisions we make each day about whom we will transact with. In today's hyperconnected world, in which for many people a bulk of their daily transactions related to business, entertainment, news, and even critical services like healthcare take place online, we tend to rely even more on heuristics like trust to help us simplify complex decisions. Thus, trust plays a critical role in online transactions. For this reason, over the past several decades researchers have developed a plethora of trust metrics and trust management systems for use in online systems. These systems have been most frequently applied to improve recommender systems and reputation systems. They have been designed for and applied to varied online systems including peer-to-peer (P2P) filesharing networks, e-commerce platforms, online social networks, messaging and communication networks, sensor networks, distributed computing networks, and others. However, comparatively little research has examined the effects on individuals, organizations or society of the presence or absence of trust in online sociotechnical systems. Using these existing trust metrics and trust management systems, we design a set of experiments to benchmark the performance of these existing systems, which rely heavily on network analysis methods. Drawing on the experiments' results, we propose a heuristic decision-making framework for selecting a trust management system for use in online systems. In this dissertation we also investigate several related but distinct aspects of trust in online sociotechnical systems. Using network/graph analysis methods, we examine how trust (or lack of trust) affects the performance of online networks in terms of security and quality of service. We explore the structure and behavior of online networks including Twitter, GitHub, and Reddit through the lens of trust. We find that higher levels of trust within a network are associated with more spread of misinformation (a form of cybersecurity threat, according to the US CISA) on Twitter. We also find that higher levels of trust in open source developer networks on GitHub are associated with more frequent incidences of cybersecurity vulnerabilities. Using our experimental and empirical findings previously described, we apply the Systems Engineering Process to design and prototype a trust management tool for use on Reddit, which we dub Coni the Trust Moderating Bot. Coni is, to the best of our knowledge, the first trust management tool designed specifically for use on the Reddit platform. Through our work with Coni, we develop and present a blueprint for constructing a Reddit trust tool which not only measures trust levels, but can use these trust levels to take actions on Reddit to improve the quality of submissions within the community (a subreddit)

Strategic management of family planning programs

    Get PDF
Program management has received insufficient attention among family planning leaders, possibly because of medical or demographic background of many leaders, a focus on other program priorities (such as sheer survival), the pressure to expand programs rapidly, and limited donor interest in the subject. As programs grow in complexity, the problems resulting from weak management systems become more obvious, and organizations are compelled to introduce rational systems. The more successful family planning programs have paid close attention to key aspects of management and have striven to continually improve their systems. According to the principles of strategic management, there is no single"best"solution to the various problems organizations face. Each organization must work out a response appropriate to a given situation. But managers should know more about possible options and their effectiveness in other settings. In family planning, a dearth of research on options - compounded by the fact that many programs do not collect basic information about program inputs and outputs - makes it difficult to analyze which programs work and why. Logistics management is the Achilles heel of family planning programs. Many programs experience depleted supplies of contraceptives in demand and oversupplies of others. Lack of contraceptives not only leads to pregnancies but erodes client trust in the service provider and undermines staff morale. Measures to improve logistics management are readily accessible. What is lacking is a commitment from high-level managers to introduce the needed changes. Staff development also merits more attention from managers, as high-caliber staff can make a big difference in program performance. Managers do not always have flexibility about staff recruitment, promotion, and retention, but they should strive for as much leverage as possible. Little research has been done on the impact of training, so managers should assess the relative effectiveness and costs of different approaches. The key factor seems to the relevance to the training content to the individual's job responsibilities.Health Monitoring&Evaluation,ICT Policyand Strategies,Agricultural Knowledge&Information Systems,Enterprise Development&Reform,Community Development and Empowerment

Deepening the Knowledge on Information Security Management in Developing Countries: Evidence from Ghana

Following the seamless integration of the internet with computer information systems and the rapid increase in the number of people worldwide who possess the skills needed to launch cyber-attacks on public communication systems, businesses and organizations can hardly assume adequate security by depending on anonymity and geographical location. The basis of this study deepens knowledge on information security management in developing countries. This study uses both quantitative and qualitative approaches to examine the information security management practices of Social Security and National Trust in Ghana. Findings from results from the study suggest significant indications of human factor vulnerabilities and threats to information security. Findings also suggest that high levels of vulnerability to an external attack. Other findings however indicate management level recognition of education and training as very essential in improving information security practices. Although the results of this study may not be generalizable, we recommend that the issue of education and training on information security management should be made top priority on the IT agendas of all organizations in Ghana. A further study is proposed to assess the value placed on information security management within the context of developing countries and the factors that influence these values. Managing five paradoxes of knowledge exchange in networked organizations: new priorities for HRM?

    Get PDF
The life-blood of most organizations is knowledge. Too often, the very mechanisms set up to facilitate knowledge-flow militate against it. This is because they are instituted in a top-down way, they are cumbersome to manage and the bridges of trust fail to get built. In their thirst for innovation, the tendency is for firms to set up elaborate transmission channels and governance systems. As a result, staff are drowned in a deluge of mundane intranet messages and bewildered by matrix structures, while off-the-wall ideas and mold-breaking insights are routinely missed. Added to this is the challenge of operating across professional, cultural, regional and linguistic boundaries, where ways of sharing knowledge differ markedly, even within the same project team. Drawing upon extensive research with scientists in the ATLAS collaboration (a high-energy particle physics experiment comprising 3,500 scientists from 38 countries) we explore five paradoxes associated with knowledge exchange in global networks. Each paradox leads to a proposition which takes the theory and practice of knowledge management in a fresh direction. We conclude by outlining a number of HRM priorities for international knowledge-intensive organizations

The Effects of Social Capital and Individual Factors on Knowledge Sharing Among ERP System Users

    Get PDF
Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system is a management technology that advocates an integrated approach to conduct business. Before organizations apply technology to improve the overall performance, they must understand what their employees need to use it. ERP systems are knowledge intensive, which require high level of knowledge absorption and knowledge sharing between organizational members in order to be used successfully. Since the knowledge sharing is a key factor to use the ERP system, therefore this study aims to identify the social capital and individual factors affecting knowledge sharing among ERP users in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). A quantitative method was employed using a self-administered questionnaire technique to collect data from 413 ERP users in Jordanian SMEs and SPSS software to analyse the data. This study found that social networks, trust, shared vision, self-efficacy, absorptive capacity; extrinsic motivation and intrinsic factors have influenced significantly on knowledge sharing among ERP users. Such a finding could provide guidelines for the management to enhance knowledge sharing among ERP users for successful ERP system usage
