    Modelling Instrumental Gestures and Techniques: A Case Study of Piano Pedalling

    PhD ThesisIn this thesis we propose a bottom-up approach for modelling instrumental gestures and techniques, using piano pedalling as a case study. Pedalling gestures play a vital role in expressive piano performance. They can be categorised into di erent pedalling techniques. We propose several methods for the indirect acquisition of sustain-pedal techniques using audio signal analyses, complemented by the direct measurement of gestures with sensors. A novel measurement system is rst developed to synchronously collect pedalling gestures and piano sound. Recognition of pedalling techniques starts by using the gesture data. This yields high accuracy and facilitates the construction of a ground truth dataset for evaluating the audio-based pedalling detection algorithms. Studies in the audio domain rely on the knowledge of piano acoustics and physics. New audio features are designed through the analysis of isolated notes with di erent pedal e ects. The features associated with a measure of sympathetic resonance are used together with a machine learning classi er to detect the presence of legato-pedal onset in the recordings from a speci c piano. To generalise the detection, deep learning methods are proposed and investigated. Deep Neural Networks are trained using a large synthesised dataset obtained through a physical-modelling synthesiser for feature learning. Trained models serve as feature extractors for frame-wise sustain-pedal detection from acoustic piano recordings in a proposed transfer learning framework. Overall, this thesis demonstrates that recognising sustain-pedal techniques is possible to a high degree of accuracy using sensors and also from audio recordings alone. As the rst study that undertakes pedalling technique detection in real-world piano performance, it complements piano transcription methods. Moreover, the underlying relations between pedalling gestures, piano acoustics and audio features are identi ed. The varying e ectiveness of the presented features and models can also be explained by di erences in pedal use between composers and musical eras

    Real-time hit classification in a smart cajón

    © 2018 Turchet, McPherson and Barthet. Smartmusical instruments are a class of IoT devices formusicmaking, which encompass embedded intelligence as well as wireless connectivity. In previous work, we established design requirements for a novel smart musical instrument, a smart cajón, following a user-centered approach. This paper describes the implementation and technical evaluation of the designed component of the smart cajón related to hit classification and repurposing. A conventional acoustic cajón was enhanced with sensors to classify position of the hit and the gesture that produced it. The instrument was equipped with five piezo pickups attached to the internal panels and a condenser microphone located inside. The developed sound engine leveraged digital signal processing, sensor fusion, and machine learning techniques to classify the position, dynamics, and timbre of each hit. The techniques were devised and implemented to achieve low latency between action and the electronically-generated sounds, as well as keep computational efficiency high. The system was tuned to classify two main cajón playing techniques at different locations and we conducted evaluations using over 2,000 hits performed by two professional players. We first assessed the classification performance when training and testing data related to recordings fromthe same player. In this configuration, classification accuracies of 100% were obtained for hit detection and location. Accuracies of over 90% were obtained when classifying timbres produced by the two playing techniques. We then assessed the classifier in a cross-player configuration (training and testing were performed using recordings from different players). Results indicated that while hit location scales relatively well across different players, gesture identification requires that the involved classifiers are trained specifically for each musician

    Establishing a Framework for the development of Multimodal Virtual Reality Interfaces with Applicability in Education and Clinical Practice

    The development of Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) content with multiple sources of both input and output has led to countless contributions in a great many number of fields, among which medicine and education. Nevertheless, the actual process of integrating the existing VR/AR media and subsequently setting it to purpose is yet a highly scattered and esoteric undertaking. Moreover, seldom do the architectures that derive from such ventures comprise haptic feedback in their implementation, which in turn deprives users from relying on one of the paramount aspects of human interaction, their sense of touch. Determined to circumvent these issues, the present dissertation proposes a centralized albeit modularized framework that thus enables the conception of multimodal VR/AR applications in a novel and straightforward manner. In order to accomplish this, the aforesaid framework makes use of a stereoscopic VR Head Mounted Display (HMD) from Oculus Rift©, a hand tracking controller from Leap Motion©, a custom-made VR mount that allows for the assemblage of the two preceding peripherals and a wearable device of our own design. The latter is a glove that encompasses two core modules in its innings, one that is able to convey haptic feedback to its wearer and another that deals with the non-intrusive acquisition, processing and registering of his/her Electrocardiogram (ECG), Electromyogram (EMG) and Electrodermal Activity (EDA). The software elements of the aforementioned features were all interfaced through Unity3D©, a powerful game engine whose popularity in academic and scientific endeavors is evermore increasing. Upon completion of our system, it was time to substantiate our initial claim with thoroughly developed experiences that would attest to its worth. With this premise in mind, we devised a comprehensive repository of interfaces, amid which three merit special consideration: Brain Connectivity Leap (BCL), Ode to Passive Haptic Learning (PHL) and a Surgical Simulator

    Tangible user interfaces : past, present and future directions

    In the last two decades, Tangible User Interfaces (TUIs) have emerged as a new interface type that interlinks the digital and physical worlds. Drawing upon users' knowledge and skills of interaction with the real non-digital world, TUIs show a potential to enhance the way in which people interact with and leverage digital information. However, TUI research is still in its infancy and extensive research is required in or- der to fully understand the implications of tangible user interfaces, to develop technologies that further bridge the digital and the physical, and to guide TUI design with empirical knowledge. This paper examines the existing body of work on Tangible User In- terfaces. We start by sketching the history of tangible user interfaces, examining the intellectual origins of this field. We then present TUIs in a broader context, survey application domains, and review frame- works and taxonomies. We also discuss conceptual foundations of TUIs including perspectives from cognitive sciences, phycology, and philoso- phy. Methods and technologies for designing, building, and evaluating TUIs are also addressed. Finally, we discuss the strengths and limita- tions of TUIs and chart directions for future research
