    Quantum-inspired computational imaging

    Computational imaging combines measurement and computational methods with the aim of forming images even when the measurement conditions are weak, few in number, or highly indirect. The recent surge in quantum-inspired imaging sensors, together with a new wave of algorithms allowing on-chip, scalable and robust data processing, has induced an increase of activity with notable results in the domain of low-light flux imaging and sensing. We provide an overview of the major challenges encountered in low-illumination (e.g., ultrafast) imaging and how these problems have recently been addressed for imaging applications in extreme conditions.     Computer Vision from Spatial-Multiplexing Cameras at Low Measurement Rates

    abstract: In UAVs and parking lots, it is typical to first collect an enormous number of pixels using conventional imagers. This is followed by employment of expensive methods to compress by throwing away redundant data. Subsequently, the compressed data is transmitted to a ground station. The past decade has seen the emergence of novel imagers called spatial-multiplexing cameras, which offer compression at the sensing level itself by providing an arbitrary linear measurements of the scene instead of pixel-based sampling. In this dissertation, I discuss various approaches for effective information extraction from spatial-multiplexing measurements and present the trade-offs between reliability of the performance and computational/storage load of the system. In the first part, I present a reconstruction-free approach to high-level inference in computer vision, wherein I consider the specific case of activity analysis, and show that using correlation filters, one can perform effective action recognition and localization directly from a class of spatial-multiplexing cameras, called compressive cameras, even at very low measurement rates of 1\%. In the second part, I outline a deep learning based non-iterative and real-time algorithm to reconstruct images from compressively sensed (CS) measurements, which can outperform the traditional iterative CS reconstruction algorithms in terms of reconstruction quality and time complexity, especially at low measurement rates. To overcome the limitations of compressive cameras, which are operated with random measurements and not particularly tuned to any task, in the third part of the dissertation, I propose a method to design spatial-multiplexing measurements, which are tuned to facilitate the easy extraction of features that are useful in computer vision tasks like object tracking. The work presented in the dissertation provides sufficient evidence to high-level inference in computer vision at extremely low measurement rates, and hence allows us to think about the possibility of revamping the current day computer systems.Dissertation/ThesisDoctoral Dissertation Electrical Engineering 201

    Computational Imaging and Artificial Intelligence: The Next Revolution of Mobile Vision

    Signal capture stands in the forefront to perceive and understand the environment and thus imaging plays the pivotal role in mobile vision. Recent explosive progresses in Artificial Intelligence (AI) have shown great potential to develop advanced mobile platforms with new imaging devices. Traditional imaging systems based on the "capturing images first and processing afterwards" mechanism cannot meet this unprecedented demand. Differently, Computational Imaging (CI) systems are designed to capture high-dimensional data in an encoded manner to provide more information for mobile vision systems.Thanks to AI, CI can now be used in real systems by integrating deep learning algorithms into the mobile vision platform to achieve the closed loop of intelligent acquisition, processing and decision making, thus leading to the next revolution of mobile vision.Starting from the history of mobile vision using digital cameras, this work first introduces the advances of CI in diverse applications and then conducts a comprehensive review of current research topics combining CI and AI. Motivated by the fact that most existing studies only loosely connect CI and AI (usually using AI to improve the performance of CI and only limited works have deeply connected them), in this work, we propose a framework to deeply integrate CI and AI by using the example of self-driving vehicles with high-speed communication, edge computing and traffic planning. Finally, we outlook the future of CI plus AI by investigating new materials, brain science and new computing techniques to shed light on new directions of mobile vision systems

    Gaussian mixture model classifiers for detection and tracking in UAV video streams.

The automation of such systems often employs detectors, trackers and classifiers as fundamental building blocks. Detection, tracking and classification are especially useful and challenging in Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) based surveillance systems. Previous solutions have addressed challenges via complex classification methods. This dissertation proposes less complex Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) based classifiers that can simplify the process; where data is represented as a reduced set of model parameters, and classification is performed in the low dimensionality parameter-space. The specification and adoption of GMM based classifiers on the UAV visual tracking feature space formed the principal contribution of the work. This methodology can be generalised to other feature spaces. This dissertation presents two main contributions in the form of submissions to ISI accredited journals. In the first paper, objectives are demonstrated with a vehicle detector incorporating a two stage GMM classifier, applied to a single feature space, namely Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HoG). While the second paper demonstrates objectives with a vehicle tracker using colour histograms (in RGB and HSV), with Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) classifiers and a Kalman filter. The proposed works are comparable to related works with testing performed on benchmark datasets. In the tracking domain for such platforms, tracking alone is insufficient. Adaptive detection and classification can assist in search space reduction, building of knowledge priors and improved target representations. Results show that the proposed approach improves performance and robustness. Findings also indicate potential further enhancements such as a multi-mode tracker with global and local tracking based on a combination of both papers

    Geo-tagging and privacy-preservation in mobile cloud computing

    With the emerge of the cloud computing service and the explosive growth of the mobile devices and applications, mobile computing technologies and cloud computing technologies have been drawing significant attentions. Mobile cloud computing, with the synergy between the cloud and mobile technologies, has brought us new opportunities to develop novel and practical systems such as mobile multimedia systems and cloud systems that provide collaborative data-mining services for data from disparate owners (e.g., mobile users). However, it also creates new challenges, e.g., the algorithms deployed in the computationally weak mobile device require higher efficiency, and introduces new problems such as the privacy concern when the private data is shared in the cloud for collaborative data-mining. The main objectives of this dissertation are: 1. to develop practical systems based on the unique features of mobile devices (i.e., all-in-one computing platform and sensors) and the powerful computing capability of the cloud; 2. to propose solutions protecting the data privacy when the data from disparate owners are shared in the cloud for collaborative data-mining. We first propose a mobile geo-tagging system. It is a novel, accurate and efficient image and video based remote target localization and tracking system using the Android smartphone. To cope with the smartphones' computational limitation, we design light-weight image/video processing algorithms to achieve a good balance between estimation accuracy and computational complexity. Our system is first of its kind and we provide first hand real-world experimental results, which demonstrate that our system is feasible and practicable. To address the privacy concern when data from disparate owners are shared in the cloud for collaborative data-mining, we then propose a generic compressive sensing (CS) based secure multiparty computation (MPC) framework for privacy-preserving collaborative data-mining in which data mining is performed in the CS domain. We perform the CS transformation and reconstruction processes with MPC protocols. We modify the original orthogonal matching pursuit algorithm and develop new MPC protocols so that the CS reconstruction process can be implemented using MPC. Our analysis and experimental results show that our generic framework is capable of enabling privacy preserving collaborative data-mining. The proposed framework can be applied to many privacy preserving collaborative data-mining and signal processing applications in the cloud. We identify an application scenario that requires simultaneously performing secure watermark detection and privacy preserving multimedia data storage. We further propose a privacy preserving storage and secure watermark detection framework by adopting our generic framework to address such a requirement. In our secure watermark detection framework, the multimedia data and secret watermark pattern are presented to the cloud for secure watermark detection in a compressive sensing domain to protect the privacy. We also give mathematical and statistical analysis to derive the expected watermark detection performance in the compressive sensing domain, based on the target image, watermark pattern and the size of the compressive sensing matrix (but without the actual CS matrix), which means that the watermark detection performance in the CS domain can be estimated during the watermark embedding process. The correctness of the derived performance has been validated by our experiments. Our theoretical analysis and experimental results show that secure watermark detection in the compressive sensing domain is feasible. By taking advantage of our mobile geo-tagging system and compressive sensing based privacy preserving data-mining framework, we develop a mobile privacy preserving collaborative filtering system. In our system, mobile users can share their personal data with each other in the cloud and get daily activity recommendations based on the data-mining results generated by the cloud, without leaking the privacy and secrecy of the data to other parties. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed system is effective in enabling efficient mobile privacy preserving collaborative filtering services.Includes bibliographical references (pages 126-133)

    Compressive Sensing for Target Detection and Tracking within Wireless Visual Sensor Networks-based Surveillance applications

    Wireless Visual Sensor Networks (WVSNs) have gained significant importance in the last few years and have emerged in several distinctive applications. The main aim of this research is to investigate the use of adaptive Compressive Sensing (CS) for efficient target detection and tracking in WVSN-based surveillance applications. CS is expected to overcome the WVSN resource constraints such as memory limitation, communication bandwidth and battery constraints. In addition, adaptive CS dynamically chooses variable compression rates according to different data sets to represent captured images in an efficient way hence saving energy and memory space. In this work, a literature review on compressive sensing, target detection and tracking for WVSN is carried out to investigate existing techniques. Only single view target tracking is considered to keep minimum number of visual sensor nodes in a wake-up state to optimize the use of nodes and save battery life which is limited in WVSNs. To reduce the size of captured images an adaptive block CS technique is proposed and implemented to compress the high volume data images before being transmitted through the wireless channel. The proposed technique divides the image to blocks and adaptively chooses the compression rate for relative blocks containing the target according to the sparsity nature of images. At the receiver side, the compressed image is then reconstructed and target detection and tracking are performed to investigate the effect of CS on the tracking performance. Least mean square adaptive filter is used to predicts target’s next location, an iterative quantized clipped LMS technique is proposed and compared with other variants of LMS and results have shown that it achieved lower error rates than other variants of lMS. The tracking is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments for single/multi targets. Results have shown that with adaptive block compressive sensing (CS) up to 31% measurements of data are required to be transmitted for less sparse images and 15% for more sparse, while preserving the 33dB image quality and the required detection and tracking performance.
