Combined automotive safety and security pattern engineering approach
Automotive systems will exhibit increased levels of automation as well as ever tighter integration with other vehicles, traffic infrastructure, and cloud services. From safety perspective, this can be perceived as boon or bane - it greatly increases complexity and uncertainty, but at the same time opens up new opportunities for realizing innovative safety functions. Moreover, cybersecurity becomes important as additional concern because attacks are now much more likely and severe. However, there is a lack of experience with security concerns in context of safety engineering in general and in automotive safety departments in particular. To address this problem, we propose a systematic pattern-based approach that interlinks safety and security patterns and provides guidance with respect to selection and combination of both types of patterns in context of system engineering. A combined safety and security pattern engineering workflow is proposed to provide systematic guidance to support non-expert engineers based on best practices. SmartMirror: A Glance into the Future
In todays society, information is available to us at a glance through our phones, our laptops, our desktops, and more. But an extra level of interaction is required in order to access the information. As technology grows, technology should grow further and further away from the traditional style of interaction with devices. In the past, information was relayed through paper, then through computers, and in todays day and age, through our phones and multiple other mediums. Technology should become more integrated into our lives - more seamless and more invisible. We hope to push the envelope further, into the future. We propose a new simple way of connecting with your morning newspaper. We present our idea, the SmartMirror, information at a glance. Our system aims to deliver your information quickly and comfortably, with a new modern aesthetic. While modern appliances require input through modules such as keyboards or touch screen, we hope to follow a model that can function purely on voice and gesture. We seek to deliver your information during your morning routine and throughout the day, when taking out your phone is not always possible. This will cater to a larger audience base, as the average consumer nowadays hopes to accomplish tasks with minimal active interaction with their adopted technology. This idea has many future applications, such as integration with new virtual or augmented reality devices, or simplifying consumer personal media sources
The ARIEL Instrument Control Unit design for the M4 Mission Selection Review of the ESA's Cosmic Vision Program
The Atmospheric Remote-sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large-survey mission
(ARIEL) is one of the three present candidates for the ESA M4 (the fourth
medium mission) launch opportunity. The proposed Payload will perform a large
unbiased spectroscopic survey from space concerning the nature of exoplanets
atmospheres and their interiors to determine the key factors affecting the
formation and evolution of planetary systems. ARIEL will observe a large number
(>500) of warm and hot transiting gas giants, Neptunes and super-Earths around
a wide range of host star types, targeting planets hotter than 600 K to take
advantage of their well-mixed atmospheres. It will exploit primary and
secondary transits spectroscopy in the 1.2-8 um spectral range and broad-band
photometry in the optical and Near IR (NIR). The main instrument of the ARIEL
Payload is the IR Spectrometer (AIRS) providing low-resolution spectroscopy in
two IR channels: Channel 0 (CH0) for the 1.95-3.90 um band and Channel 1 (CH1)
for the 3.90-7.80 um range. It is located at the intermediate focal plane of
the telescope and common optical system and it hosts two IR sensors and two
cold front-end electronics (CFEE) for detectors readout, a well defined process
calibrated for the selected target brightness and driven by the Payload's

Information and communication on the designation and management of Natura2000 sites. Main Report 3: Towards Integrated Management
Following the selection of Special Protection Areas (SPA) and Sites of Community Importance (SCI) according to the Birds and the Habitats Directives, most European Member States are now in process of formally designating SPAs and SCIs as Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) or Natura2000 sites. These protected areas collectively form the European Union’s Natura2000 network. Member States are also selecting and implementing adequate management approaches and instruments to maintain and restore the favourable conservation status of protected species and habitat types and to prevent damage to the integrity of the sites. Both actions follow Articles 6.1 and 6.2 of the Habitats Directive.
To help the Member States, the European Commission wishes to improve the knowledge and exchange of information and good practice both on the designation process of SPAs and SACs and on the establishment of conservation measures and instruments for these areas. Furthermore, the Commission wants to stress the importance of the sites and their management by involving a wider group of stakeholders in the development of so-called integrated management, in accordance with Article 2 of the Habitats Directive.
The project ‘PREPARATORY ACTIONS- Lot 2: Information and communication on the designation and management of sites’ (tender ENV.B.2/SER/2007/0076) is intended to help the Commission to achieve these objectives. In this report we will elaborate on the concept of integrated management as an option for managing the sites. In the first part the meaning of integrated management will be explored. In a second part we give some examples of management approaches that we think illustrate best the concept of integrated management and its potential to achieve the Natura2000 goals
Geometric equations of state in Friedmann-Lema\^{i}tre universes admitting matter and Ricci Collineations
As a rule in General Relativity the spacetime metric fixes the Einstein
tensor and through the Field Equations (FE) the energy-momentum tensor. However
one cannot write the FE explicitly until a class of observers has been
considered. Every class of observers defines a decomposition of the
energy-momentum tensor in terms of the dynamical variables energy density
(), the isotropic pressure (), the heat flux and the traceless
anisotropic pressure tensor . The solution of the FE requires
additional assumptions among the dynamical variables known with the generic
name equations of state. These imply that the properties of the matter for a
given class of observers depends not only on the energy-momentum tensor but on
extra a priori assumptions which are relevant to that particular class of
observers. This makes difficult the comparison of the Physics observed by
different classes of observers for the {\it same} spacetime metric. One way to
overcome this unsatisfactory situation is to define the extra condition
required among the dynamical variables by a geometric condition, which will be
based on the metric and not to the observers. Among the possible and multiple
conditions one could use the consideration of collineations. We examine this
possibility for the Friedmann-Lema\^{i}tre-Robertson-Walker models admitting
matter and Ricci collineations and determine the equations of state for the
comoving observers. We find linear and non-linear equations of state, which
lead to solutions satisfying the energy conditions, therefore describing
