    Grasping and Assembling with Modular Robots

    A wide variety of problems, from manufacturing to disaster response and space exploration, can benefit from robotic systems that can firmly grasp objects or assemble various structures, particularly in difficult, dangerous environments. In this thesis, we study the two problems, robotic grasping and assembly, with a modular robotic approach that can facilitate the problems with versatility and robustness. First, this thesis develops a theoretical framework for grasping objects with customized effectors that have curved contact surfaces, with applications to modular robots. We present a collection of grasps and cages that can effectively restrain the mobility of a wide range of objects including polyhedra. Each of the grasps or cages is formed by at most three effectors. A stable grasp is obtained by simple motion planning and control. Based on the theory, we create a robotic system comprised of a modular manipulator equipped with customized end-effectors and a software suite for planning and control of the manipulator. Second, this thesis presents efficient assembly planning algorithms for constructing planar target structures collectively with a collection of homogeneous mobile modular robots. The algorithms are provably correct and address arbitrary target structures that may include internal holes. The resultant assembly plan supports parallel assembly and guarantees easy accessibility in the sense that a robot does not have to pass through a narrow gap while approaching its target position. Finally, we extend the algorithms to address various symmetric patterns formed by a collection of congruent rectangles on the plane. The basic ideas in this thesis have broad applications to manufacturing (restraint), humanitarian missions (forming airfields on the high seas), and service robotics (grasping and manipulation)

    Whole-Hand Robotic Manipulation with Rolling, Sliding, and Caging

    Traditional manipulation planning and modeling relies on strong assumptions about contact. Specifically, it is common to assume that contacts are fixed and do not slide. This assumption ensures that objects are stably grasped during every step of the manipulation, to avoid ejection. However, this assumption limits achievable manipulation to the feasible motion of the closed-loop kinematic chains formed by the object and fingers. To improve manipulation capability, it has been shown that relaxing contact constraints and allowing sliding can enhance dexterity. But in order to safely manipulate with shifting contacts, other safeguards must be used to protect against ejection. “Caging manipulation,” in which the object is geometrically trapped by the fingers, can be employed to guarantee that an object never leaves the hand, regardless of constantly changing contact conditions. Mechanical compliance and underactuated joint coupling, or carefully chosen design parameters, can be used to passively create a caging grasp – protecting against accidental ejection – while simultaneously manipulating with all parts of the hand. And with passive ejection avoidance, hand control schemes can be made very simple, while still accomplishing manipulation. In place of complex control, better design can be used to improve manipulation capability—by making smart choices about parameters such as phalanx length, joint stiffness, joint coupling schemes, finger frictional properties, and actuator mode of operation. I will present an approach for modeling fully actuated and underactuated whole-hand-manipulation with shifting contacts, show results demonstrating the relationship between design parameters and manipulation metrics, and show how this can produce highly dexterous manipulators

    Neuromorphic event-based slip detection and suppression in robotic grasping and manipulation

    Slip detection is essential for robots to make robust grasping and fine manipulation. In this paper, a novel dynamic vision-based finger system for slip detection and suppression is proposed. We also present a baseline and feature based approach to detect object slips under illumination and vibration uncertainty. A threshold method is devised to autonomously sample noise in real-time to improve slip detection. Moreover, a fuzzy based suppression strategy using incipient slip feedback is proposed for regulating the grip force. A comprehensive experimental study of our proposed approaches under uncertainty and system for high-performance precision manipulation are presented. We also propose a slip metric to evaluate such performance quantitatively. Results indicate that the system can effectively detect incipient slip events at a sampling rate of 2kHz (Δt=500μs\Delta t = 500\mu s) and suppress them before a gross slip occurs. The event-based approach holds promises to high precision manipulation task requirement in industrial manufacturing and household services.Comment: 18 pages, 14 figure

    Flexible Object Manipulation

    Flexible objects are a challenge to manipulate. Their motions are hard to predict, and the high number of degrees of freedom makes sensing, control, and planning difficult. Additionally, they have more complex friction and contact issues than rigid bodies, and they may stretch and compress. In this thesis, I explore two major types of flexible materials: cloth and string. For rigid bodies, one of the most basic problems in manipulation is the development of immobilizing grasps. The same problem exists for flexible objects. I have shown that a simple polygonal piece of cloth can be fully immobilized by grasping all convex vertices and no more than one third of the concave vertices. I also explored simple manipulation methods that make use of gravity to reduce the number of fingers necessary for grasping. I have built a system for folding a T-shirt using a 4 DOF arm and a fixed-length iron bar which simulates two fingers. The main goal with string manipulation has been to tie knots without the use of any sensing. I have developed single-piece fixtures capable of tying knots in fishing line, solder, and wire, along with a more complex track-based system for autonomously tying a knot in steel wire. I have also developed a series of different fixtures that use compressed air to tie knots in string. Additionally, I have designed four-piece fixtures, which demonstrate a way to fully enclose a knot during the insertion process, while guaranteeing that extraction will always succeed

    Autonomous task-based grasping for mobile manipulators

    A fully integrated grasping system for a mobile manipulator to grasp an unknown object of interest (OI) in an unknown environment is presented. The system autonomously scans its environment, models the OI, plans and executes a grasp, while taking into account base pose uncertainty and obstacles in its way to reach the object. Due to inherent line of sight limitations in sensing, a single scan of the OI often does not reveal enough information to complete grasp analysis; as a result, our system autonomously builds a model of an object via multiple scans from different locations until a grasp can be performed. A volumetric next-best-view (NBV) algorithm is used to model an arbitrary object and terminates modelling when grasp poses are discovered on a partially observed object. Two key sets of experiments are presented: i) modelling and registration error in the OI point cloud model is reduced by selecting viewpoints with more scan overlap, and ii) model construction and grasps are successfully achieved while experiencing base pose uncertainty. A generalized algorithm is presented to discover grasp pose solutions for multiple grasp types for a multi-fingered mechanical gripper using sensed point clouds. The algorithm introduces two key ideas: 1) a histogram of finger contact normals is used to represent a grasp “shape” to guide a gripper orientation search in a histogram of object(s) surface normals, and 2) voxel grid representations of gripper and object(s) are cross-correlated to match finger contact points, i.e. grasp “size”, to discover a grasp pose. Constraints, such as collisions with neighbouring objects, are incorporated in the cross-correlation computation. Simulations and preliminary experiments show that 1) grasp poses for three grasp types are found in near real-time, 2) grasp pose solutions are consistent with respect to voxel resolution changes for both partial and complete point cloud scans, 3) a planned grasp pose is executed with a mechanical gripper, and 4) grasp overlap is presented as a feature to identify regions on a partial object model ideal for object transfer or securing an object

    Interlocking structure design and assembly

    Many objects in our life are not manufactured as whole rigid pieces. Instead, smaller components are made to be later assembled into larger structures. Chairs are assembled from wooden pieces, cabins are made of logs, and buildings are constructed from bricks. These components are commonly designed by many iterations of human thinking. In this report, we will look at a few problems related to interlocking components design and assembly. Given an atomic object, how can we design a package that holds the object firmly without a gap in-between? How many pieces should the package be partitioned into? How can we assemble/extract each piece? We will attack this problem by first looking at the lower bound on the number of pieces, then at the upper bound. Afterwards, we will propose a practical algorithm for designing these packages. We also explore a special kind of interlocking structure which has only one or a small number of movable pieces. For example, a burr puzzle. We will design a few blocks with joints whose combination can be assembled into almost any voxelized 3D model. Our blocks require very simple motions to be assembled, enabling robotic assembly. As proof of concept, we also develop a robot system to assemble the blocks. In some extreme conditions where construction components are small, controlling each component individually is impossible. We will discuss an option using global controls. These global controls can be from gravity or magnetic fields. We show that in some special cases where the small units form a rectangular matrix, rearrangement can be done in a small space following a technique similar to bubble sort algorithm

    Grasping for the Task:Human Principles for Robot Hands

    The significant advances made in the design and construction of anthropomorphic robot hands, endow them with prehensile abilities reaching that of humans. However, using these powerful hands with the same level of expertise that humans display is a big challenge for robots. Traditional approaches use finger-tip (precision) or enveloping (power) methods to generate the best force closure grasps. However, this ignores the variety of prehensile postures available to the hand and also the larger context of arm action. This thesis explores a paradigm for grasp formation based on generating oppositional pressure within the hand, which has been proposed as a functional basis for grasping in humans (MacKenzie and Iberall, 1994). A set of opposition primitives encapsulates the hand's ability to generate oppositional forces. The oppositional intention encoded in a primitive serves as a guide to match the hand to the object, quantify its functional ability and relate this to the arm. In this thesis we leverage the properties of opposition primitives to both interpret grasps formed by humans and to construct grasps for a robot considering the larger context of arm action. In the first part of the thesis we examine the hypothesis that hand representation schemes based on opposition are correlated with hand function. We propose hand-parameters describing oppositional intention and compare these with commonly used methods such as joint angles, joint synergies and shape features. We expect that opposition-based parameterizations, which take an interaction-based perspective of a grasp, are able to discriminate between grasps that are similar in shape but different in functional intent. We test this hypothesis using qualitative assessment of precision and power capabilities found in existing grasp taxonomies. The next part of the thesis presents a general method to recognize oppositional intention manifested in human grasp demonstrations. A data glove instrumented with tactile sensors is used to provide the raw information regarding hand configuration and interaction force. For a grasp combining several cooperating oppositional intentions, hand surfaces can be simultaneously involved in multiple oppositional roles. We characterize the low-level interactions between different surfaces of the hand based on captured interaction force and reconstructed hand surface geometry. This is subsequently used to separate out and prioritize multiple and possibly overlapping oppositional intentions present in the demonstrated grasp. We evaluate our method on several human subjects across a wide range of hand functions. The last part of the thesis applies the properties encoded in opposition primitives to optimize task performance of the arm, for tasks where the arm assumes the dominant role. For these tasks, choosing the strongest power grasp available (from a force-closure sense) may constrain the arm to a sub-optimal configuration. Weaker grasp components impose fewer constraints on the hand, and can therefore explore a wider region of the object relative pose space. We take advantage of this to find the good arm configurations from a task perspective. The final hand-arm configuration is obtained by trading of overall robustness in the grasp with ability of the arm to perform the task. We validate our approach, using the tasks of cutting, hammering, screw-driving and opening a bottle-cap, for both human and robotic hand-arm systems

    Learning deep representations for robotics applications

    In this thesis, two hierarchical learning representations are explored in computer vision tasks. First, a novel graph theoretic method for statistical shape analysis, called Compositional Hierarchy of Parts (CHOP), was proposed. The method utilises line-based features as its building blocks for the representation of shapes. A deep, multi-layer vocabulary is learned by recursively compressing this initial representation. The key contribution of this work is to formulate layerwise learning as a frequent sub-graph discovery problem, solved using the Minimum Description Length (MDL) principle. The experiments show that CHOP employs part shareability and data compression features, and yields state-of- the-art shape retrieval performance on 3 benchmark datasets. In the second part of the thesis, a hybrid generative-evaluative method was used to solve the dexterous grasping problem. This approach combines a learned dexterous grasp generation model with two novel evaluative models based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). The data- efficient generative method learns from a human demonstrator. The evaluative models are trained in simulation, using the grasps proposed by the generative approach and the depth images of the objects from a single view. On a real grasp dataset of 49 scenes with previously unseen objects, the proposed hybrid architecture outperforms the purely generative method, with a grasp success rate of 77.7% to 57.1%. The thesis concludes by comparing the two families of deep architectures, compositional hierarchies and DNNs, providing insights on their strengths and weaknesses
