Meanwhile, visible light communication (VLC) using light devices such as light emitting diodes (LEDs) has been deemed to be a promising candidate in the heterogeneous wireless networks that may collaborate with radio frequencies (RF) wireless networks. In particular, light-fidelity has a great potential for deployment in future indoor environments because of its high throughput and security advantages. This paper provides a comprehensive study of a novel positioning technology based on visible white LED lights, which has attracted much attention from both academia and industry. The essential characteristics and principles of this system are deeply discussed, and relevant positioning algorithms and designs are classified and elaborated. This paper undertakes a thorough investigation into current LED-based indoor positioning systems and compares their performance through many aspects, such as test environment, accuracy, and cost. It presents indoor hybrid positioning systems among VLC and other systems (e.g., inertial sensors and RF systems). We also review and classify outdoor VLC positioning applications for the first time. Finally, this paper surveys major advances as well as open issues, challenges, and future research directions in VLC positioning systems.Peer reviewe

    SenSys: A Smartphone-Based Framework for ITS applications

    Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) use different methods to collect and process traffic data. Conventional techniques suffer from different challenges, like the high installation and maintenance cost, connectivity and communication problems, and the limited set of data. The recent massive spread of smartphones among drivers encouraged the ITS community to use them to solve ITS challenges. Using smartphones in ITS is gaining an increasing interest among researchers and developers. Typically, the set of sensors that comes with smartphones is utilized to develop tools and services in order to enhance safety and driving experience. GPS, cameras, Bluetooth, inertial sensors and other embedded sensors are used to detect and analyze drivers\u27 behavior and vehicles\u27 motion. The use of smartphones made the data collection process easier because of their availability among drivers, the set of different sensors, the computation ability, and the low installation and maintenance cost. On the other hand, different smartphones sensors have diverse characteristics and accuracy and each one of them needs special fusion, processing, and filtration methods to generate more stable and accurate data. Using smartphones in ITS faces different challenges like inaccurate readings, weak GPS reception, noisy sensors and unaligned readings.These challenges waste researchers and developers time and effort, and they prevent them from building accurate ITS applications. This work proposes SenSys a smartphone framework that collects and processes traffic data and then analyzes and extracts vehicle dynamics and vehicle activities which can be used by developers and researchers to create their navigation, communication, and safety ITS applications. SenSys framework fuses and filters smartphone\u27s sensors readings which result in enhancing the accuracy of tracking and analyzing various vehicle dynamics such as vehicle\u27s stops, lane changes, turn detection, and accurate vehicle speed calculation that, in turn, will enable development of new ITS applications and services

    Robust Algorithms for Estimating Vehicle Movement from Motion Sensors Within Smartphones

    Building sustainable traffic control solutions for urban streets (e.g., eco-friendly signal control) and highways requires effective and reliable sensing capabilities for monitoring traffic flow conditions so that both the temporal and spatial extents of congestion are observed. This would enable optimal control strategies to be implemented for maximizing efficiency and for minimizing the environmental impacts of traffic. Various types of traffic detection systems, such as inductive loops, radar, and cameras have been used for these purposes. However, these systems are limited, both in scope and in time. Using GPS as an alternative method is not always viable because of problems such as urban canyons, battery depletion, and precision errors. In this research, a novel approach has been taken, in which smartphone low energy sensors (such as the accelerometer) are exploited. The ubiquitous use of smartphones in everyday life, coupled with the fact that they can collect, store, compute, and transmit data, makes them a feasible and inexpensive alternative to the mainstream methods. Machine learning techniques have been used to develop models that are able to classify vehicle movement and to detect the stop and start points during a trip. Classifiers such as logistic regression, discriminant analysis, classification trees, support vector machines, neural networks, and Hidden Markov models have been tested. Hidden Markov models substantially outperformed all the other methods. The feature quality plays a key role in the success of a model. It was found that, the features which exploited the variance of the data were the most effective. In order to assist in quantifying the performance of the machine learning models, a performance metric called Change Point Detection Performance Metric (CPDPM) was developed. CPDPM proved to be very useful in model evaluation in which the goal was to find the change points in time series data with high accuracy and precision. The integration of accelerometer data, even in the motion direction, yielded an estimated speed with a steady slope, because of factors such as phone sensor bias, vibration, gravity, and other white noise. A calibration method was developed that makes use of the predicted stop and start points and the slope of integrated accelerometer data, which achieves great accuracy in estimating speed. The developed models can serve as the basis for many applications. One such field is fuel consumption and CO2 emission estimation, in which speed is the main input. Transportation mode detection can be improved by integrating speed information. By integrating Vehicle (Phone) to Infrastructure systems (V2I), the model outputs, such as the stop and start instances, average speed along a corridor, and queue length at an intersection, can provide useful information for traffic engineers, planners, and decision makers

    Road Grade Estimation Using Crowd-Sourced Smartphone Data

    Estimates of road grade/slope can add another dimension of information to existing 2D digital road maps. Integration of road grade information will widen the scope of digital map's applications, which is primarily used for navigation, by enabling driving safety and efficiency applications such as Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), eco-driving, etc. The huge scale and dynamic nature of road networks make sensing road grade a challenging task. Traditional methods oftentimes suffer from limited scalability and update frequency, as well as poor sensing accuracy. To overcome these problems, we propose a cost-effective and scalable road grade estimation framework using sensor data from smartphones. Based on our understanding of the error characteristics of smartphone sensors, we intelligently combine data from accelerometer, gyroscope and vehicle speed data from OBD-II/smartphone's GPS to estimate road grade. To improve accuracy and robustness of the system, the estimations of road grade from multiple sources/vehicles are crowd-sourced to compensate for the effects of varying quality of sensor data from different sources. Extensive experimental evaluation on a test route of ~9km demonstrates the superior performance of our proposed method, achieving 5×5\times improvement on road grade estimation accuracy over baselines, with 90\% of errors below 0.3^\circ.Comment: Proceedings of 19th ACM/IEEE Conference on Information Processing in Sensor Networks (IPSN'20

    Sensing Human Activity for Smart Cities’ Mobility Management

    Knowledge about human mobility patterns is the key element towards efficient mobility management. Traditionally, these data are collected by paper/phone household surveys or travel diaries and serve as input for transportation planning models. In this chapter, we report on current state-of-the-art techniques for sensing human activity and report on their applicability for smart city mobility management purposes. We particularly focus on the use of location-enabled devices and their potential towards replacing traditional data collection approaches. Furthermore, to illustrate applicability of smartphones as ubiquitous sensing devices we report on the use of Routecoach application that was used for mobility data collection in the city of Leuven, Belgium. We provide insights into lessons learned, ways in which collected data were used by different stakeholders, and identify existing gaps and future research needs in this field

    Design and implementation of an open framework for ubiquitous carbon footprint calculator applications

    As climate change is becoming an important global issue, more and more people are beginning to pay attention to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. To measure personal or household carbon dioxide emission, there are already plenty of carbon footprint calculators available on the web. Most of these calculators use quantitative models to estimate carbon emission caused by a user\u27s activities. Although these calculators can promote public awareness regarding carbon emission due to an individual\u27s behavior, there are concerns about the consistency and transparency of these existing CO2 calculators. Apart from a small group of smart phone based carbon footprint calculator applications, most of the existing CO2 calculators require users to input data manually. This not only provides a poor user experience but also makes the calculation less accurate. The use of a standard framework for various carbon footprint application developments can increase the accuracy of overall calculations, which in turn may increase energy awareness at the individual human level. We aim for developing a carbon footprint calculation framework that can serve as a platform for various carbon footprint calculator applications. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a platform-agnostic Open Carbon Footprint Framework (OCFF) that will provide the necessary interfaces for software developers to incorporate the latest scientific knowledge regarding climate change into their applications. OCFF will maintain a clouded knowledge base that will give developers access to a dynamic source of computational information that can be brought to bear on real-time sensor data. Based on the OCFF platform, we developed a Ubiquitous Carbon Footprint Calculator application (UCFC) that allows the user to be aware of their personal carbon footprint based on their ubiquitous activity and act accordingly. The major contribution of this paper is the presentation of the quantitative model of the platform along with the entire design and implementation of UCFC application. We also present the results, analysis, and findings of an extensive survey that has been conducted to find users’ awareness of increased carbon footprint, feature requirements, and expectations and desires to alleviate CO2 emissions by using a footprint calculator. The design of UCFC application incorporates the analysis and inferences of the survey results. We are also developing a fuel efficient mobile GPS application for iPhone suggesting the greenest/most fuel efficient route to the user.     Algorithms for Constructing Vehicle Trajectories in Urban Networks Using Inertial Sensors Data from Mobile Devices

    Vehicle trajectories are an important source of information for estimating traffic flow characteristics. Lately, several studies have focused on identifying a vehicle’s trajectory in traffic network using data from mobile devices. However, these studies predominantly employed GPS coordinate information for tracking a vehicle’s speed and position in the transportation network. Considering the known limitations of GPS, such as, connectivity issues at urban canyons and underpasses, low precision of localization, high power consumption of device while GPS is in use, this research focuses on developing alternate methods for identifying a vehicle’s trajectory at an intersection and at a urban grid network using sensor data other than GPS in order to minimize GPS dependency. In particular, accelerometer and gyroscope data collected using smartphone’s inertial sensors, and speed data collected using an on-board diagnostics (OBD) device, are utilized to develop algorithms for maneuver (i.e., left/right turn and through), trip direction, and trajectory identification. Different algorithms using threshold of gyroscope and magnetometer readings, and machine learning techniques such as k-medoids clustering and dynamic time warping are developed for maneuver identification and their accuracy is tested on collected field data. It is found that, clustering based on maximum and minimum value of gyroscope readings is effective for maneuver identification. For trip direction identification at an intersection, two different methods are developed and tested. The first method utilizes accelerometer, gyroscope and OBD speed data, and the 2nd method employs magnetometer and acceleration data. The results demonstrate that the developed method using accelerometer, gyroscope and OBD speed data are effective in identifying a vehicle’s direction. An effective algorithm is developed using OBD speed information, maneuver and trip direction identification algorithms to identify vehicle’s trajectory at a grid network. Techniques for noise removal and orientation correction to transfer the raw data from phone’s local coordinate to global coordinate system are also demonstrated. Overall, this research eliminates the need for continuous GPS connectivity for trajectory identification. This research can be incorporated in methods developed by researchers to estimate traffic flow, delays, and queue lengths at intersections. This information can lead to better signal timings, travel recommendations, and traffic updates

    Roadmap on measurement technologies for next generation structural health monitoring systems

    Structural health monitoring (SHM) is the automation of the condition assessment process of an engineered system. When applied to geometrically large components or structures, such as those found in civil and aerospace infrastructure and systems, a critical challenge is in designing the sensing solution that could yield actionable information. This is a difficult task to conduct cost-effectively, because of the large surfaces under consideration and the localized nature of typical defects and damages. There have been significant research efforts in empowering conventional measurement technologies for applications to SHM in order to improve performance of the condition assessment process. Yet, the field implementation of these SHM solutions is still in its infancy, attributable to various economic and technical challenges. The objective of this Roadmap publication is to discuss modern measurement technologies that were developed for SHM purposes, along with their associated challenges and opportunities, and to provide a path to research and development efforts that could yield impactful field applications. The Roadmap is organized into four sections: distributed embedded sensing systems, distributed surface sensing systems, multifunctional materials, and remote sensing. Recognizing that many measurement technologies may overlap between sections, we define distributed sensing solutions as those that involve or imply the utilization of numbers of sensors geometrically organized within (embedded) or over (surface) the monitored component or system. Multi-functional materials are sensing solutions that combine multiple capabilities, for example those also serving structural functions. Remote sensing are solutions that are contactless, for example cell phones, drones, and satellites. It also includes the notion of remotely controlled robots
