    A benefit-oriented framework for the decision-making process on the application of KMS in SME

    The result of the presented PhD project is an artifact providing the SME practitioner with the KinS conceptual framework including method support. Therefore concepts from KM and KMS are newly combined and validated applying the perceived benefit approach of the KMS Success Model. The KinS framework uses the demand for support as the starting point for the perceived benefit and analyzes it with regard to the support opportunities by knowledge services. With the help of the framework, the gap in the knowledge base can be addressed and benefit-orientation in the KMS support can be provided

    Digital Transformation and Social Business: A Practice-Based Pathway Framework for SMEs

    This research focuses on the lessons learnt from case studies involving the digital transformation of three London SMEs. The companies adopted social technologies to renovate operations, develop new sets of skills and capabilities and remodel customer value propositions. The transformation processes had common elements that fed through to the companies’ strategies. We conceptualised our research as a network, regarding roles and interventions as network effects, to analyse the adoption process and dynamically link the technology and social context with digital transformation strategy. The lessons learned were distilled into a framework whose two-fold aim is to (a) support organisations through digital transformation and (b) inform organisational strategy. The framework is modular with components that assist and guide the various phases of designing, deploying, implementing and sustaining this transition

    Knowledge Sharing Initiatives in a Chinese Professional Services Firm

    Knowledge management has received increasing attention from both academics and practitioners in the past few years. However, much of what we know is limited to larger organisations in developed economies. In this study, we describe and analyse the impact of an knowledge sharing project in a medium sized Chinese professional services firm. Employing Canonical Action Research, we describe how we diagnosed the organisational situation, planned theory-driven changes, implemented a new knowledge sharing platform and then evaluated the outcomes of the implementation. Key findings relate to the importance of guanxi (relationships) between employees and the role of instant messaging technology. The theoretical and practical implications of these findings for knowledge management in the Chinese context are discussed. Recommendations for future research and additional technology applications are identified

This paper uses meta-analysis as the tool of analysis to identify and classify literatures that have been used as sthe foundation of overview regarding innovation and knowedge management system in creative industry. Traditional companies have goals orientations in the form of labor, buildings, land, and financial capital nowadays has changed with the rapidity of competition, competitive intensity, information intensity, market uncertainty, and the use of technology. Knowledge has become an important organizational strategic asset. Creative industry is an industry that empowers innovation to added value that comes from creative people. The existence of creative people in creative industry emphasizes the fact that companies can not build innovative concepts without considering the purpose and motivation of creative people in generating innovative work. Without such considerations The literatures viewed that creative industries can not last long and at risk of losing creative people. During the last few years, KM becomes one of the essential factors for the successful business and companies are becoming more knowledge-based, and they are focusing more on the people's 'minds' rather than their 'hands' to fulfil the need to knowledge (Wong, 2005). The main focus of this study is in success factors of KM having in consideration that Small and Medium Enterprises (hereinafter: SMEs) have fewer resources and opportunities, both human and financial (Farvaque & Voss, 2009). This research is about the main factors of KM that plays a successful role in SMEs in the United Arab Emirates (hereinafter: UAE), Qatar & Pakistan.     Knowledge management systems : an adoption framework for small and medium enterprises (SMEs)

    Technology is becoming increasingly affordable and accessible through advances in innovation. At the same time, valuable organisational resources are moving from tangible (e.g., steel) to intangible resources (e.g., knowledge). For this reason, knowledge is viewed by many scholars as a sustainable competitive advantage. To compete successfully in the knowledge economy, organisational knowledge should be appropriately managed through management practices encompassing the creation, storage, retrieval, transfer and application of knowledge using IT systems. The combination of hardware and software to drive knowledge management (KM) is known as a knowledge management system (KMS). The literature has consistently acknowledged the high failure rates of technology adoption in organisations. It can have devastating consequences for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) as they have fewer resources to recover from KMS adoption failure. Equally important is the fact that SMEs contribute substantially to the gross domestic product and employment of national economies worldwide. The same is true for South African SMEs. Given the picture of KM in the SME context, it is important to investigate potential factors that can lead to improved KMS adoption in SMEs. As scholarly literature on KMS adoption in SMEs is limited, this study could contribute uniquely to the body of knowledge focused on these factors. Within the Technology-Organisation-Environment (TOE) framework, Diffusion of Innovation (DOI) and critical success factors (CSF), the study constructed a framework for KMS adoption in SMEs. After constructing a preliminary conceptual framework from the literature, data was collected using a two-phase approach. In phase one, four mini focus groups comprising four SMEs each were interviewed. The thematic analysis revealed eight themes that expanded the existing framework. The purpose of phase two was to validate the framework developed in phase one through face-to-face or online discussions with six SME subject matter experts. Phase two identified five themes that further confirmed and strengthened the framework. The study contributed on a theoretical, empirical and practical level. Having identified several key factors for KMS adoption, the framework aims to improve the use of KMS in SMEs by employees and, as a result, SME performance and sustainability. Future research could condense or identify additional factors to test the framework developed in the study.     An ecosystem approach to knowledge management: Case studies of two Australian SMEs

    This study is centred on the premise that knowledge is personalised information which can be enriched through the process of learning, then shared and applied to practical situations to attain value. To highlight the complex nature of knowledge management (KM) as a set of practices and aimed to enhance collaboration, the concept of a Collaborative Leaning Ecosystem (CLES) is presented as holistic approach toward improving practical learning environments. In view of the pressing need for better KM in small-to-medium (SME) enterprises, the CLES framework is used to examine the KM positions of two Australian SMEs. Viewing each case as an 'organisational ecosystem', the holistic assessment of each SME exposes certain KM inefficiencies unique to the firm, which are addressed through a set of actionable KM strategies for improving the relationships among the components interacting within each organisational ecosystem

    Successful Strategies for Using Knowledge Management in Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises

    Knowledge management (KM) is vital for an organization to succeed in a highly dynamic and competitive world. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore strategies that managers of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) use to effectively integrate KM into business practices. The study population comprised 5 managers from 2 SMEs operating in Uganda. The eligibility criteria for this study were that participants had to be from Ugandan SMEs with a knowledge-intensive environment, managers with some responsibility of KM in the organization, and experienced with at least 1 year of successful KM practices. The conceptual framework for this study was theory z. Data were collected through face-to-face, semistructured interviews and reviews of company documents. Member checking was completed to strengthen credibility and trustworthiness. After methodological triangulation of the data sources collected and completion of Yin\u27s 5-step process of data analysis, 5 themes emerged: having supportive leadership, ensuring sustainability, embedding KM practices in the organization culture, socialization, and embracing modern technology. The findings of this study might promote social change by supporting SME managers\u27 use of KM to expand opportunities for employees to learn new skills and knowledge leading to the expansion of employment opportunities
