    Cloud Computing-based IT Solutions For Organizations with Multiregional Branch Offices

    I chaired a session in the morning of April 28, and then presented my paper in the afternoon. There were exciting discussions after my presentation. People in the information and information system management area are interested in the cloud-computing scheme, but they are more concerned with the security issues that may arise. So, some critical evaluation of the new IT solution must be done fully before adopt it for an organization. During the conference, I had talks with other attendees about AU. They are very interested in AU, often surprised at our success. Prof. Grant at the Ryerson University told me that last year she met one of our students we sent to Case IT 2010 competition at SFU, and she got a very good impression of and feedback about AU from the student. This should serve as a proof that we should more often send our students to national or international events such as Case IT (we have sent a team in two consecutive years since last year), HackUs (we sent one student to competition this year). Those students may become good convincing advocates of AU and AU programs. She also mentioned that she had offered one session of teaching through distance learning, and she had some good feedback from the students. So, she would like to do more. This lets me wonder what would happen to AU if more and more professors at other universities start to offer their courses through DE, as an option for students who cannot attend the classes at campus.One of the most significant phenomena of the new century is globalization. As business goes global, multiregional branch offices are needed and networked computing and information services must then be established for those branch offices. In this paper we investigate a cloud computing based approach to the rapid deployment of computing and information services for organizations with multiregional branch offices. We first take a look at the general process leading to the deployment of Computer and Information Technology (CIT) services for organizations, and then present some cloud computing-based solutions for organizations with multiregional branch offices, followed by discussions about their key features as well as issues and concerns surrounding the proposed IT solutions. An important contribution of this paper is a generalized view of the cloud computing-based approach, which may be used as guidance in implementing and deploying such IT solutions

    SLA-driven dynamic cloud resource management

    As the size and complexity of Cloud systems increase, the manual management of these solutions becomes a challenging issue as more personnel, resources and expertise are needed. Service Level Agreement (SLA)- aware autonomic cloud solutions enable managing large scale infrastructure management meanwhile supporting multiple dynamic requirement from users. This paper contributes to these topics by the introduction of Cloudcompaas, a SLA-aware PaaS Cloud platform that manages the complete resource lifecycle. This platform features an extension of the SLA specification WS-Agreement, tailored to the specific needs of Cloud Computing. In particular, Cloudcompaas enables Cloud providers with a generic SLA model to deal with higher-level metrics, closer to end-user perception, and with flexible composition of the requirements of multiple actors in the computational scene. Moreover, Cloudcompaas provides a framework for general Cloud computing applications that could be dynamically adapted to correct the QoS violations by using the elasticity features of Cloud infrastructures. The effectiveness of this solution is demonstrated in this paper through a simulation that considers several realistic workload profiles, where Cloudcompaas achieves minimum cost and maximum efficiency, under highly heterogeneous utilization patterns. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.     SLA-Driven Cloud Computing Domain Representation and Management

    The assurance of Quality of Service (QoS) to the applications, although identified as a key feature since long ago [1], is one of the fundamental challenges that remain unsolved. In the Cloud Computing context, Quality of Service is defined as the measure of the compliance of certain user requirement in the delivery of a cloud resource, such as CPU or memory load for a virtual machine, or more abstract and higher level concepts such as response time or availability. Several research groups, both from academia and industry, have started working on describing the QoS levels that define the conditions under which the service need to be delivered, as well as on developing the necessary means to effectively manage and evaluate the state of these conditions. [2] propose Service Level Agreements (SLAs) as the vehicle for the definition of QoS guarantees, and the provision and management of resources. A Service Level Agreement (SLA) is a formal contract between providers and consumers, which defines the quality of service, the obligations and the guarantees in the delivery of a specific good. In the context of Cloud computing, SLAs are considered to be machine readable documents, which are automatically managed by the provider's platform. SLAs need to be dynamically adapted to the variable conditions of resources and applications. In a multilayer architecture, different parts of an SLA may refer to different resources. SLAs may therefore express complex relationship between entities in a changing environment, and be applied to resource selection to implement intelligent scheduling algorithms. Therefore SLAs are widely regarded as a key feature for the future development of Cloud platforms. However, the application of SLAs for Grid and Cloud systems has many open research lines.     Automated and dynamic multi-level negotiation framework applied to an efficient cloud provisioning

    L’approvisionnement du Cloud est le processus de déploiement et de gestion des applications sur les infrastructures publiques du Cloud. Il est de plus en plus utilisé car il permet aux fournisseurs de services métiers de se concentrer sur leurs activités sans avoir à gérer et à investir dans l’infrastructure. Il comprend deux niveaux d’interaction : (1) entre les utilisateurs finaux et les fournisseurs de services pour l’approvisionnement des applications, et (2) entre les fournisseurs de services et les fournisseurs de ressources pour l’approvisionnement des ressources virtuelles. L’environnement Cloud est devenu un marché complexe où tout fournisseur veut maximiser son profit monétaire et où les utilisateurs finaux recherchent les services les plus efficaces tout en minimisant leurs coûts. Avec la croissance de la concurrence dans le Cloud, les fournisseurs de services métiers doivent assurer un approvisionnement efficace qui maximise la satisfaction de la clientèle et optimise leurs profits.Ainsi, les fournisseurs et les utilisateurs doivent être satisfaits en dépit de leurs besoins contradictoires. La négociation est une solution prometteuse qui permet de résoudre les conflits en comblant le gap entre les capacités des fournisseurs et les besoins des utilisateurs. Intuitivement, la négociation automatique des contrats (SLA) permet d’aboutir à un compromis qui satisfait les deux parties. Cependant, pour être efficace, la négociation automatique doit considérer les propriétés de l’approvisionnement du Cloud et les complexités liées à la dynamicité (dynamicité de la disponibilité des ressources, dynamicité des prix). En fait ces critères ont un impact important sur le succès de la négociation. Les principales contributions de cette thèse répondant au défi de la négociation multi-niveau dans un contexte dynamique sont les suivantes: (1) Nous proposons un modèle de négociateur générique qui considère la nature dynamique de l’approvisionnement du Cloud et son impact potentiel sur les résultats décisionnels. Ensuite, nous construisons un cadre de négociation multicouche fondé sur ce modèle en l’instanciant entre les couches du Cloud. Le cadre comprend des agents négociateurs en communication avec les modules en relation avec la qualité et le prix du service à fournir (le planificateur, le moniteur, le prospecteur de marché). (2) Nous proposons une approche de négociation bilatérale entre les utilisateurs finaux et les fournisseurs de service basée sur une approche d’approvisionnement existante. Les stratégies de négociation sont basées sur la communication avec les modules d’approvisionnement (le planificateur et l’approvisionneur de machines virtuelles) afin d’optimiser les bénéfices du fournisseur de service et de maximiser la satisfaction du client. (3) Afin de maximiser le nombre de clients, nous proposons une approche de négociation adaptative et simultanée comme extension de la négociation bilatérale. Nous proposons d’exploiter les changements de charge de travail en termes de disponibilité et de tarification des ressources afin de renégocier simultanément avec plusieurs utilisateurs non acceptés (c’est-à-dire rejetés lors de la première session de négociation) avant la création du contrat SLA. (4) Afin de gérer toute violation possible de SLA, nous proposons une approche proactive de renégociation après l’établissement de SLA. La renégociation est lancée lors de la détection d’un événement inattendu (par exemple, une panne de ressources) pendant le processus d’approvisionnement. Les stratégies de renégociation proposées visent à minimiser la perte de profit pour le fournisseur et à assurer la continuité du service pour le consommateur. Les approches proposées sont mises en œuvre et les expériences prouvent les avantages d’ajouter la (re)négociation au processus d’approvisionnement. The main contributions of this thesis tackling the challenge of multi-level negotiation in a dynamic context are as follows: (1) We propose a generic negotiator model that considers the dynamic nature of cloud provisioning and its potential impact on the decision-making outcome. Then, we build a multi-layer negotiation framework built upon that model by instantiating it among Cloud layers. The framework includes negotiator agents. These agents are in communication with the provisioning modules that have an impact on the quality and the price of the service to be provisioned (e.g, the scheduler, the monitor, the market prospector). (2) We propose a bilateral negotiation approach between end-users and business providers extending an existing provisioning approach. The proposed decision-making strategies for negotiation are based on communication with the provisioning modules (the scheduler and the VM provisioner) in order to optimize the business provider’s profit and maximize customer satisfaction. (3) In order to maximize the number of clients, we propose an adaptive and concurrent negotiation approach as an extension of the bilateral negotiation. We propose to harness the workload changes in terms of resource availability and pricing in order to renegotiate simultaneously with multiple non-accepted users (i.e., rejected during the first negotiation session) before the establishment of the SLA. (4) In order to handle any potential SLA violation, we propose a proactive renegotiation approach after SLA establishment. The renegotiation is launched upon detecting an unexpected event (e.g., resource failure) during the provisioning process. The proposed renegotiation decision-making strategies aim to minimize the loss in profit for the provider and to ensure the continuity of the service for the consumer. The proposed approaches are implemented and experiments prove the benefits of adding (re)negotiation to the provisioning process. The use of (re)negotiation improves the provider’s profit, the number of accepted requests, and the client’s satisfaction

    Resource Management in Large-scale Systems

    The focus of this thesis is resource management in large-scale systems. Our primary concerns are energy management and practical principles for self-organization and self-management. The main contributions of our work are: 1. Models. We proposed several models for different aspects of resource management, e.g., energy-aware load balancing and application scaling for the cloud ecosystem, hierarchical architecture model for self-organizing and self-manageable systems and a new cloud delivery model based on auction-driven self-organization approach. 2. Algorithms. We also proposed several different algorithms for the models described above. Algorithms such as coalition formation, combinatorial auctions and clustering algorithm for scale-free organizations of scale-free networks. 3. Evaluation. Eventually we conducted different evaluations for the proposed models and algorithms in order to verify them. All the simulations reported in this thesis had been carried out on different instances and services of Amazon Web Services (AWS). All of these modules will be discussed in detail in the following chapters respectively

    Análise de desempenho das ferramentas CAD 3D da UA

    Mestrado em Engenharia MecânicaO aparecimento de um novo paradigma como a cloud computing no panorama dos softwares CAD 3D, levou à necessidade de perceber se existem vantagens em adotar este novo sistema em relação ao modelo tradicional, nomeadamente no ambiente académico. Este trabalho teve por objetivo analisar e caracterizar o desempenho de cinco ferramentas CAD 3D disponíveis na Universidade de Aveiro (CATIA V5, Solidworks student version 2016-2017, Solid Edge ST6, Fusion 360 student version e Onshape student version) visando melhorar o processo de ensino-aprendizagem e desempenho dos futuros utilizadores. Deste modo, foram analisados as diferentes interfaces e transferência de ficheiros entre aplicações, procedeu-se à análise das quatro principais ferramentas de modelação (revolve, extrude, sweep, loft), efetuou-se a modelação de peças orgânicas e peças prismáticas, no modo sólido e superfície, analisou-se ainda o assembly, o rendering e o levantamento de forma de uma das aplicações. Para obter a caracterização de cada software para as funcionalidades em análise, no desenvolvimento do trabalho foi efetuada a modelação 3D de peças como uma chávena, um pires e uma peça mecânica e foram produzidas as respetivas imagens foto-realísticas. Para o levantamento de forma foi utilizado um punho e um rato de computador. Foi igualmente efetuada uma montagem elementar de um conjunto de peças. Os resultados obtidos apontam para a robustez das aplicações baseadas no cloud computing onde por exemplo, o software Fusion 360 caracterizou-se por um número reduzido de erros em associação a uma vasta aplicabilidade, aceita os sketches mais rudimentares e apresenta o menor número de erros na modelação das peças em análise, já o software Onshape caracteriza-se por uma utilização bastante intuitiva, mas uma reduzida aplicabilidade. No entanto o menor tempo de modelação, para as peças estudada foi apresentado pelo software Solid Edge. Os resultados deste estudo devem ser completados com uma análise de projetos de maior complexidade.The appearance of a new paradigm such as cloud computing in the scenery of CAD 3D software, led to the need to understand if there advantages in adopting this new system instead of the traditional model, especially in academic environment. This work had as goal, analyze and characterize the development of five tools CAD 3D available in Aveiro’s University (CATIA V5, Solidworks student version 2016-2017, Solid Edge ST6, Fusion 360 student version e Onshape student version) aiming the improvement of teach-learning process and performance of future users. Thus, the different interfaces and transference of files between apps were analyzed, proceeded to the analysis of the four major tools of modeling (revolve, extrude, sweep, loft), to modeling the organic and prismatic pieces, on solid and surface modes, to assembly, to rendering and to form lifting. To get the description of each software for the functionalities in analysis, during the development of this work, was performed a 3D modeling of pieces like a cup, a saucer, and a mechanic piece and were produced the respective photo-realistic images. For the form lifting was used a grip and a computer mouse. Likewise, were performed an elementary assembly of set of pieces. The obtained results point to the robustness of the apps based on cloud computing, where, for example, the software Fusion 360 is characterized for its reduced number of errors associated with vast applicability, accepts the most rudimentary sketches and presents the fewest number of errors while modeling the pieces under analysis. Yet, the Onshape software is characterized for its intuitive utilization, but with reduced applicability. However, the lower modeling time, for the pieces under evaluation, was presented by the Solid Edge software. The results of this study must be completed with a project analysis with bigger complexity
