    The needs and demands on location information have arisen rapidly. With the advancement of mobile computing technologies, many researches and studies have been conducted in providing reliable location information solution. Location based information has become an important resource for mobile users especially in giving direction or locating places. Wireless Location Based Services (Wi-LBS) highlight this scenario by explaining the application and usage of the LBS in wireless environment. Wi-LBS is introduced with respect to providing wireless method in locating places within UTP campus instead of referring to static map. The objective of this research is to integrate GIS with MMS technology as a system called Wireless Location Based Services. It is mainly focused on applying GIS elements in providing location information by utilizing the advancement of today's wireless handheld devices. Users will request for location by sending short messages using their mobile phones to the WiLBS system and the system will reply back sending the location information containing pictures and direction. Rapid Application Development (RAD) is used as the methodology in designing the system of Wi-LBS. This research also details the study on Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) that covers the sending of picture messages from Wi-LBS to mobile phones and system's function in responding to the users' requests. Various references and studies have been done regarding the successful LBS applications implemented in foreign country that leads to the interest of doing the research on LBS implementation in this country. The result from the research will be the proposed framework for Wi-LBS, the discussion on the GIS and MMS as well as the system of Wi-LBS. This study proved that Wireless Location Based Services has great potential to be commercially implemented with the growth of wireless application nowadays as today's community is eager of getting more services from wireless system

    Utilization of Crowdsourced Maps in Catastrophic Disasters

    Crowdsourced data, the collective messages from citizens through social media like TwitterÂź or FacebookÂź, have been increasingly recognized as a vital information source in a catastrophic disaster. Because there is often insufficient emergency personnel to gather situational information during a big disaster, the crowdsourced data can offer a supplemental means for data collection or dissemination immediately after the disaster. In addition, crowdsourced maps can empower citizens with their involvement. In the Haiti earthquake of 2010, crowdsourced data was first used to create a web map application to aid the humanitarian effort. With some success in Haiti, these crowdsourced maps have since been created for other disasters in many countries. However, although the crowdsourced map showed great potential, it also revealed a major shortcoming: most first responders did not use the crowdsourced map. This thesis addresses the issues associated with using crowdsourced maps in the responder community and seeks a possible solution for increasing utilization by first responders during catastrophic disasters. Citizen messages from the Japan earthquake of 2011 were analyzed and filtered by categories best suited for responders. Then, considering the technological difficulties experienced immediately following the disaster, the best communication means were explored to complete two-way communication between responders and citizens

    Entity-Centric Abstraction and Modeling Framework for Transportation Architectures

    A comprehensive framework for representing transpportation architectures is presented. After discussing a series of preceding perspectives and formulations, the intellectual underpinning of the novel framework using an entity-centric abstraction of transportation is described. The entities include endogenous and exogenous factors and functional expressions are offered that relate these and their evolution. The end result is a Transportation Architecture Field which permits analysis of future concepts under the holistic perspective. A simulation model which stems from the framework is presented and exercised producing results which quantify improvements in air transportation due to advanced aircraft technologies. Finally, a modeling hypothesis and its accompanying criteria are proposed to test further use of the framework for evaluating new transportation solutions

    The United States Navy has been the dominate force of the sea in the last half century, but advancements in technology have given other nations the ability to narrow the gap and, in some cases, threaten U.S. superiority. The U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and the Coast Guard are the triad forces for maritime domain protection. One area of potential vulnerability is in the littoral environment. However, emerging commercial technologies, like 5G, can expand the footprint of systems and capabilities within that environment for naval services to utilize. The private sector already has the lead in developing 5G state-of-the-art resources, which has enabled manned and unmanned systems to accomplish more tasks. One long-standing obstacle for the naval services to implement commercially available systems was the Department of Defense’s desire to be the owner and operator of any systems it employed. One benefit of utilizing existing commercial systems in naval operations would be to enhance capabilities without developing a completely new system. This thesis explores current and projected abilities of a commercial 5G technology for employment by U.S. naval services. Testing of 5G millimeter wave was conducted for this research.     Mobile commerce business models and technologies towards success

    Mobile commerce is any transaction with a monetary value that is conducted via a mobile telecommunications network. This thesis tries to examine the factors leading to the success of mobile commerce as well as factors that may hinder its success. This research is separated into five parts: In the first part of this thesis, an analysis of wired e-commerce businesses is made; followed by advantages of mobile commerce over wired e-commerce. In the second part of this thesis, new wireless business models that are expected to generate substantial revenue flows as well as some successful examples of these business models are discussed. In the third part of this thesis, advances in wireless technologies that will lead to the success of mobile commerce are discussed. In the fourth part of this thesis, competition strategies and revenue structure of mobile commerce are discussed. And finally, in the fifth part of this thesis, drawbacks of wireless technologies towards the success of mobile commerce as well as how they can be overcome are discussed. The research and the conclusion suggest that although wireless technologies and their related business models are fairly new, they are growing at rapid speed. These are incredible sources of revenue. Once the factors hindering their usability, reliability, development and deployment are overcome, mobile technologies show great potential as revenue generators for both existing and newly developing businesse

    A Data-driven, High-performance and Intelligent CyberInfrastructure to Advance Spatial Sciences

    abstract: In the field of Geographic Information Science (GIScience), we have witnessed the unprecedented data deluge brought about by the rapid advancement of high-resolution data observing technologies. For example, with the advancement of Earth Observation (EO) technologies, a massive amount of EO data including remote sensing data and other sensor observation data about earthquake, climate, ocean, hydrology, volcano, glacier, etc., are being collected on a daily basis by a wide range of organizations. In addition to the observation data, human-generated data including microblogs, photos, consumption records, evaluations, unstructured webpages and other Volunteered Geographical Information (VGI) are incessantly generated and shared on the Internet. Meanwhile, the emerging cyberinfrastructure rapidly increases our capacity for handling such massive data with regard to data collection and management, data integration and interoperability, data transmission and visualization, high-performance computing, etc. Cyberinfrastructure (CI) consists of computing systems, data storage systems, advanced instruments and data repositories, visualization environments, and people, all linked together by software and high-performance networks to improve research productivity and enable breakthroughs that are not otherwise possible. The Geospatial CI (GCI, or CyberGIS), as the synthesis of CI and GIScience has inherent advantages in enabling computationally intensive spatial analysis and modeling (SAM) and collaborative geospatial problem solving and decision making. This dissertation is dedicated to addressing several critical issues and improving the performance of existing methodologies and systems in the field of CyberGIS. My dissertation will include three parts: The first part is focused on developing methodologies to help public researchers find appropriate open geo-spatial datasets from millions of records provided by thousands of organizations scattered around the world efficiently and effectively. Machine learning and semantic search methods will be utilized in this research. The second part develops an interoperable and replicable geoprocessing service by synthesizing the high-performance computing (HPC) environment, the core spatial statistic/analysis algorithms from the widely adopted open source python package – Python Spatial Analysis Library (PySAL), and rich datasets acquired from the first research. The third part is dedicated to studying optimization strategies for feature data transmission and visualization. This study is intended for solving the performance issue in large feature data transmission through the Internet and visualization on the client (browser) side.     Semantic discovery and reuse of business process patterns

    Patterns currently play an important role in modern information systems (IS) development and their use has mainly been restricted to the design and implementation phases of the development lifecycle. Given the increasing significance of business modelling in IS development, patterns have the potential of providing a viable solution for promoting reusability of recurrent generalized models in the very early stages of development. As a statement of research-in-progress this paper focuses on business process patterns and proposes an initial methodological framework for the discovery and reuse of business process patterns within the IS development lifecycle. The framework borrows ideas from the domain engineering literature and proposes the use of semantics to drive both the discovery of patterns as well as their reuse
