    Role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) art in care of ageing society: focus on dementia

    open access articleBackground: Art enhances both physical and mental health wellbeing. The health benefits include reduction in blood pressure, heart rate, pain perception and briefer inpatient stays, as well as improvement of communication skills and self-esteem. In addition to these, people living with dementia benefit from reduction of their noncognitive, behavioural changes, enhancement of their cognitive capacities and being socially active. Methods: The current study represents a narrative general literature review on available studies and knowledge about contribution of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in creative arts. Results: We review AI visual arts technologies, and their potential for use among people with dementia and care, drawing on similar experiences to date from traditional art in dementia care. Conclusion: The virtual reality, installations and the psychedelic properties of the AI created art provide a new venue for more detailed research about its therapeutic use in dementia

    A contribution to the incorporation of sociability and creativity skills to computers and robots

    This dissertation contains the research and work completed by the PhD candidate on the incorporation of sociability and creativity skills to computers and robots. Both skills can be directly related with empathy, which is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. In this form, this research can be contextualized in the framework of recent developments towards the achievement of empathy machines. The first challenge at hands refers to designing pioneering techniques based on the use of social robots to improve user experience interacting with them. In particular, research focus is on eliminating or minimizing pain and anxiety as well as loneliness and stress of long-term hospitalized child patients. This challenge is approached by developing a cloud-based robotics architecture to effectively develop complex tasks related to hospitalized children assistance. More specifically, a multiagent learning system is introduced based on a combination of machine learning and cloud computing using low-cost robots (Innvo labs's Pleo rb). Moreover, a wireless communication system is also developed for the Pleo robot in order to help the health professional who conducts therapy with the child, monitoring, understanding, and controlling Pleo behavior at any moment. As a second challenge, a new formulation of the concept of creativity is proposed in order to empower computers with. Based on previous well established theories from Boden and Wiggins, this thesis redefines the formal mechanism of exploratory and transformational creativity in a way which facilitates the computational implementation of these mechanisms in Creativity Support Systems. The proposed formalization is applied and validated on two real cases: the first, about chocolate designing, in which a novel and flavorful combination of chocolate and fruit is generated. The second case is about the composition of a single voice tune of reel using ABC notation.Postprint (published version

    Image and Evidence: The Study of Attention through the Combined Lenses of Neuroscience and Art

To advance the central argument that art offers a training ground for the attentional system, a wide range of contemporary art was analysed in light of specific tasks invoked. The kinds of cognitive tasks these works initiate with respect to the attentional system have been particularly critical to this research. Attention was explored within the context of transdisciplinary art practices, varied circumstances of viewing, new neuroscientific findings, and new approaches towards learning. Research for this dissertation required practical investigations in a gallery setting, and this original work was contextualised and correlated with pertinent neuroscientific approaches. It was also concluded that art can enhance public awareness of attention disorders and assist the public in discriminating between medical and social factors through questioning how norms of behaviour are defined and measured. This territory was examined through the comparative analysis of several diagnostic tests for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), through the adaptation of a methodology from economics involving patent citation in order to show market incentives, and through examples of data visualisation. The construction of an installation and collaborative animation allowed participants to experience first-hand the constraints on the attentional system, provoking awareness of our own “normal” physiological limitations. The embodied knowledge of images, emotion, and social context that are deeply embedded in art practices appeared to be capable of supplementing neuroscience’s understanding of attention and its disorders

    When it's not the main game : art in hospitals

    In art galleries, not surprisingly, art is their ‘main game’. All the pertinent bureaucratic, financial and curatorial disciplines are applied to ensure all art hanging on the walls is valued and displayed to its best advantage. But when art is exhibited on the walls of other public institutions it is not their ‘main game’. It appears to fall into a vacuum and becomes almost invisible, like wallpaper. Public institutions have spent millions of dollars on the procurement and installation of art, yet few understand the long-term implications of placing art in the public sphere. The development of the contemporary hospital system and the formalisation of nurse training from the 1850s onwards, spurred the public debate on what constituted the ideal decoration for hospital environments. Medical professionals, volunteer groups and artists installed a variety of artistic mediums in hospitals as a means of bringing solace to patients and staff. These decorations have ranged from simple floral bouquets, cheap reproduction prints and painted tiles to the procurement of large original art collections of national significance. Yet scant consideration was given to the long-term viability of the art installed in environments attuned to dispensing medical treatment rather than curating art collections. This thesis looks at the tenuous plight of art in hospitals, a study inspired by the loss of a nationally significant art collection acquired by Westmead Hospital in the late 1970s. For the first time, this original empirical study provides a detailed analysis of the problematic history of installing art and other decorative mediums in hospitals, from the mid-19th century
