    Designing a set of English for specific purposes study materials for welding students at Viljandi Vocational Training Centre

    The aim of this master thesis is to design a set of study materials for welding students at Viljandi Vocational Training Centre (VIKK). The author’s interest in the topic arose from the practical point of view; namely, from the experience of lacking suitable study materials for ESP courses generally and more precisely, for welding students at VIKK. The main research question that arose when compiling such a study was what vocabulary should be taught for welding students at VIKK? The first chapter of this paper gives an overview of ESP and materials design; in addition, examines ESP and corpus studies and analyses the national curriculum and school curriculum of welding. The second chapter describes the Brigham Young University Wikipedia corpus and how a welding sub-corpus was built by using its online application. The results of the analysis were used for creating a welding word list for students at VIKK. The created vocabulary list includes terms in English and Estonian.     The Future of the Casebook: An Argument for an Open-Source Approach

    Despite dramatic technological change, the thick, attractively-bound casebook remains ensconced as the written centerpiece of legal education. That will soon change – but its replacement has not been established. This paper argues that the legal academy should take this opportunity to implement an “open source” approach to future course materials. Guided by analysis and examples of commons-based peer production such as open source software, professors could establish electronic commons casebooks with a myriad of materials for every course. These joint databases would unshackle individual creativity while engendering collaboration on levels previously impossible. Although there may be concerns that such a project would not draw any interest, or might be swamped by too much interest, the successes of other peer-production projects demonstrate that such concerns are generally unwarranted or manageable. Copyright ultimately poses the biggest difficulty, but even that barrier can be circumvented to greater and lesser degrees. Although as yet an untried experiment, an open source approach has the potential to open a new era in legal pedagogy

    Education today: 12 + 5 < 4 - lessons of education reforms in Portugal and beyond

    Since the adoption of the ‘Lei de Bases…’ of 1984, the quality of education in Portugal is declining, undermined by ‘critical, creative and independent thinking’, implemented by neglecting memorization as a learning tool, as supposedly students should understand things without knowing them. As a consequence, vast majority of students can’t retain any abstract knowledge. They prepare from scratch for their tests and forget everything afterwards. The students never acquire essential primary-school skills such as capacity to do mental calculations, hence the title of this report, comparing contemporary school + university education to pre-1984 primary school of 4 years. The quality of education is further degraded by ‘evaluation’ of teachers at school and university, judged by academic success and degree of satisfaction of their students. With the students objectively incapable to learn, understand or remember, the teachers have a dilemma of either letting such students pass without retained knowledge, skills and competences, or else have their own ‘evaluation’ suffer. As the generations change, students who were ‘passed’ become teachers themselves, still with no retained knowledge and thus no moral authority to fail their own students.     This paper considers some questions prompted by a brief review of the history of computing. Why is programming so hard? Why is concurrency considered an “advanced” subject? What’s the matter with Objects? Where did all the Maths go? In searching for answers, the paper looks at some concerns over fundamental ideas within object orientation (as represented by modern programming languages), before focussing on the concurrency model of communicating processes and its particular expression in the occam family of languages. In that focus, it looks at the history of occam, its underlying philosophy (Ockham’s Razor), its semantic foundation on Hoare’s CSP, its principles of process oriented design and its development over almost three decades into occam-? (which blends in the concurrency dynamics of Milner’s ?-calculus). Also presented will be an urgent need for rationalisation – occam-? is an experiment that has demonstrated significant results, but now needs time to be spent on careful review and implementing the conclusions of that review.     Technology has become ubiquitous in the twenty-first century learning. Students in higher education are learning collaboratively across the globe as technology has made it possible for university students to blur boundaries of borders. It is imperative in the twenty-first century for a higher education curriculum to have technology embedded throughout. The purpose of this study is to explore technology in a higher education curriculum where academics have different views. The study draws on technology in higher education from three fundamental perspectives: technology critics’ perspective, technology enthusiasts’ perspective and technology from an intellectual perspective. The study ends with a conclusion that was drawn from the three main perspectives of technology. The author clearly supports the view of technology from an intellectual point of view as it enhances students’ learning experiences

    Opening Up to OERs: Electronic Original Sourcebook vs. Traditional Textbook in the Introduction to American Government Course

    Traditional American Government textbooks are expensive and often unpopular with students. New technologies and Open Educational Resources (OERs) open up the potential for change, but questions of quality are ever present: can OERs really help students learn better, or are they just cheaper? I developed an OER based on original sources and compared student learning outcomes with the OER section to those in a free digital textbook section. While the OER I created did not work as well as I had hoped, I nonetheless developed a redesign of my course and my approach to teaching, which is the true benefit of adopting OERs
