Evolution of Supply Chain Collaboration: Implications for the Role of Knowledge
Increasingly, research across many disciplines has recognized the shortcomings of the traditional âintegration prescriptionâ for inter-organizational knowledge management. This research conducts several simulation experiments to study the effects of different rates of product change, different demand environments, and different economies of scale on the level of integration between firms at different levels in the supply chain. The underlying paradigm shifts from a static, steady state view to a dynamic, complex adaptive systems and knowledge-based view of supply chain networks. Several research propositions are presented that use the role of knowledge in the supply chain to provide predictive power for how supply chain collaborations or integration should evolve. Suggestions and implications are suggested for managerial and research purposes
Clusters and supply chain management: challenges and obstacles
Purpose: This paper provides an insight into cluster supply chain (CSC) management by identifying
challenges and obstacles in the design, implementation and improvement of CSC. This evaluation aims to
propose future research directions for the management of CSC.
Research Approach: A systematic review of published research on CSC management between 2006 and
2013 is conducted in order to round up previous research in this area and identify the gaps in the design,
implementation and management of CSC; up on which the paper closes with a proposed agenda for future
work.
Findings and Originality: There is a limited understanding of the supply chain cluster concept and the
implementation of its practices in addition to the lack of studies that focused on how to model, manage
and improve the performance of CSC. Therefore, this paper would contribute to knowledge by providing an
insight into CSC management and identifying future research directions for developing SC cluster theories
in order to maximize the integration of supply chain and accordingly improving the performance of firms.
Research Impact: A limited number of studies have been conducted to demonstrate the potential impact of
CSC. The previous research did not provide a comprehensive review focusing on the evolution and the
development of CSC idea. The review in this paper will summarise the research up to now in CSC area in
order to identify challenges and obstacles in the design, implementation and improvement of CSC and
propose future research directions.
Practical Impact: This paper helps companies to understand benefits that can be raised from creating CSC
and gives them directions for improving their capabilities to create CSC and select SC partners, which
consequently help in increasing their competitiveness in terms of enhancing performance and increasing
sustainability
Sustainable supply chain management needs sustainable logistics services. The strategic role played by logistics service providers
Purpose â The purpose of this research is to examine the concept of sustainable service co-creation
in triadic business relationships in logistics and supply chain management. More companies seek to
develop sustainable solutions that would not be sustainable exclusively for themselves but for the
supply chain they belong to. In doing that â especially when dealing with services â they may need
the external support from logistics service providers (LSPs). This paper aims to explore the
innovative initiatives undertaken by LSPs in triadic relationship management with their customers
and suppliers while co-creating sustainable services along the supply chain.
Design/methodology/approach â To investigate the research question, a systematic literature
review and empirical exploratory investigation through case study will be conducted adopting the
qualitative methodology, to explore trends and evolving paradigms.
Findings â A literature review conducted in this paper enriches existing literature through an
integration of sustainability in a viable system approach and logistics service provision, in
particular, it investigates the ways in which sustainability is achieved. It is assumed that
the triadic relationship among an LSP and its customers and suppliers requires significant
modifications in collaboration and an innovative approach in operating procedures.
Research limitations/implications â This paper is an exploratory study and limited in its scope to
an example of a relationship that focuses mainly on three actors: the supplier, the LSP and the
customer. However, it could be extended in terms of numbers of case studies investigated.
Practical implications â The implications arising from the literature and the empirical research
offer a range of current sustainable practices in the services sector. This could be a starting point for
other research and company activities.
Originality/value â There is little research that addresses the issue of sustainability and logistics
service providers simultaneously, hence the present paper is meant to fill the gap by providing a
foundation which actors of different supply chains could use as a benchmark. This study gives
evidence of how logistics services may contribute to sustainable development.

The impact of Green Information Systems on sustainable supply chain and organizational performance
This paper reports about a research in progress focusing on the impact of green information systems on sustainable supply chain performance. Green information systems, supply chains and their relation to sustainability and performance measurement are explained. The preliminary literature review resulted in a draft conceptual framework where sustainable supply chain measures focusing on economic, environmental and social aspects are combined with traditional supply chain performance measures of cost, quality, dependability, flexibility and speed. The measures for the triple bottom line of sustainability are listed as internal and external indicators. The research challenges addressed in this preliminary work comprise of integration of sustainability performance with traditional performance objectives in the supply chain, measurement of the social performance of supply chain and establishment of the relationship amongst the sustainable supply chain and performance indicators using a green information system infrastructure
Supply Chains and Porous Boundaries: The Disaggregation of Legal Services
The economic downturn has had significant effects on law firms, and is causing many of them to rethink some basic assumptions about how they operate. In important respects, however, the downturn has simply intensified the effects of some deeper trends that preceded it, which are likely to continue after any recovery that may occur.
This paper explores one of these trends, which is corporate client insistence that law firms âdisaggregateâ their services into discrete tasks that can be delegated to the least costly providers who can perform them. With advances in communications technology, there is increasing likelihood that some of these persons may be located outside the formal boundaries of the firm. This means that law firms may need increasingly to confront the make or buy decision that their corporate clients have regularly confronted for some time. The potential for vertical disintegration is a relatively recent development for legal services, but is well-established in other sectors of the global economy.
Empirical work in several disciplines has identified a number of issues that arise for organizations as the make or buy decision becomes a potentially more salient feature of their operations. Much of this work has focused in particular on the implications of relying on outsourcing as an integral part of the production process. This paper discusses research on: (1) the challenges of ensuring that work performed outside the firm is fully integrated into the production process; (2) coordinating projects for which networks of organizations are responsible; (3) managing the transfer of knowledge inside and outside of firms that are participants in a supply chain; and (4) addressing the impact of using contingent workers on an organizationâs workforce, structure, and culture. A review of this research suggests considerations that law firms will need to assess if they begin significantly to extend the process of providing services beyond their formal boundaries. Discussing the research also is intended to introduce concepts that may become increasingly relevant to law firms, but which currently are not commonly used to analyze their operations. Considering how these concepts are applicable to law firms may prompt us to rethink how to conceptualize these firms and what they do.
This paper therefore is a preliminary attempt to explore: (1) the extent to which law firms may come to resemble the vertically disintegrated organizations that populate many other economic sectors and (2) the potential implications of this trend for the provision of legal services,the trajectory of legal careers, and lawyersâ sense of themselves as members of a distinct profession
The use of information systems for logistics and supply chain management in South East Europe: Current status and future direction
This research aims to investigate the current status and future direction of the use of information systems for logistics and supply chain management (LSCM) in South East Europe. The objectives are threefold: (1) to identify major challenges and developments on the use of information systems for LSCM by enterprises, (2) to examine the actual level of satisfaction of current policy on LSCM, and (3) to reveal the actual need of enterprises in South East Europe on effective use of information systems for LSCM. Mixed methodology of literature review and questionnaire survey is adopted in this research. Data collected from 79 enterprises are analysed using descriptive analysis in SPSS. The findings suggest that enterprises in Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), Romania, and Serbia and Montenegro, face similar challenges but all are in different stages of developments of LSCM. Their use of information systems explains their heavy focus on supply chain partnership and weakness in demand chain partnership. Major findings suggest that companies and governments alike in that region do not seem to be ready for playing a significant and demanding role in global supply chains. Current deficiencies, including limited abilities in building valuable forward relations, weak strategic planning and organisation, and infrastructural problems, are major obstacles for fast development in LSCM. At the same time though, traces of changing mentalities do exist, setting the ground for improved performance and ultimately for a better position in global business
Contextual impacts on industrial processes brought by the digital transformation of manufacturing: a systematic review
The digital transformation of manufacturing (a phenomenon also known as "Industry 4.0" or "Smart Manufacturing") is finding a growing interest both at practitioner and academic levels, but is still in its infancy and needs deeper investigation. Even though current and potential advantages of digital manufacturing are remarkable, in terms of improved efficiency, sustainability, customization, and flexibility, only a limited number of companies has already developed ad hoc strategies necessary to achieve a superior performance. Through a systematic review, this study aims at assessing the current state of the art of the academic literature regarding the paradigm shift occurring in the manufacturing settings, in order to provide definitions as well as point out recurring patterns and gaps to be addressed by future research. For the literature search, the most representative keywords, strict criteria, and classification schemes based on authoritative reference studies were used. The final sample of 156 primary publications was analyzed through a systematic coding process to identify theoretical and methodological approaches, together with other significant elements. This analysis allowed a mapping of the literature based on clusters of critical themes to synthesize the developments of different research streams and provide the most representative picture of its current state. Research areas, insights, and gaps resulting from this analysis contributed to create a schematic research agenda, which clearly indicates the space for future evolutions of the state of knowledge in this field
CURRENT ISSUES AFFECTING TRADE AND TRADE POLICY: AN ANNOTATED LITERATURE REVIEW
This review provides a base of literature describing current issues and research on the impacts of lobalization and the industrialization of agriculture and recent approaches to analyze and model agricultural trade and trade policies. Three key factors of the survey are differentiated goods, global economic integration and international supply chain linkages. The review covers 182 publications, which are presented alphabetically by author with a brief annotation describing how it relates to the above criteria. The articles are also indexed by keyword.
