    Fear of the unknown: a pre-departure qualitative study of Turkish international students

    This paper presents findings from eleven in-depth interviews with Turkish undergraduate students, who were, by the time of data collection, about to spend a semester at a European university under the Erasmus exchange scheme. The students all agreed to be interviewed about their feelings about studying in a foreign culture, and were found to be anxious prior to departure about the quality of accommodation in the new destination, their language ability and the opportunity to form friendships. Fears were expressed about possible misconceptions over Turkey as a Muslim and a developing country. Suggestions are made for HEI interventions to allay student travellers’ concerns

    The Reasssesment of the Service Quality System within the Romanian Hotel Industry – a Premise for Increasing the Competition of the Tourist Offer

    The main priority both at microeconomic and macroeconomic level is to provide high quality tourist services; more and more countries, as well as tourist enterprises are setting their own standards for services and quality. In spite of the many advantages granted by the standards and the management quality system, these instruments of ensuring the quality of services in the hospitality industry are limited in terms of coverage and action area due to the fact that they do not allow national level quality insurance. The new system should include: the total amount of criteria, the methods of the assessment, the designation of the institutions to be involved in the implementation of the system, the improvement of the system, as well as designating the staff that will evaluate the results and create the correcting measures. The proposed system requests: completion of the extra criteria as per the methodological norms of stars classification based on quality elements on one side and the implementation by the Ministry of Tourism of the good practice standards, through a specialised office who will be in charge with the implementation of a compulsory self-evaluation system, the use of the information provided by the“ mystery client” both by the Ministry and the organization to double check if the necessary and extra criteria are respected, the quality of services and the staff behaviour, in view of increasing the hotel services’ quality and food industry in Romania.quality management, standards of quality, extra-criteria of classification, hospitality industry, good practice norms, national quality system

    REFELCTIONS ON THE (RE)POSITIONING OF THE FINANCIAL ADMINISTRATION CONTROL

    The financial administration control offers the managing staff the possibility to decide on the entrusted methods and means and to direct its action in order to reach the objectives that were set out according to the main interests of each company. The objectives are set down by taking into consideration both managing and operative functions. However, the desired results are obtained only after a certain period of time, during which there may occur changes of the initial context within which the objectives and action plans were drawn up. In this case the readjustment of the financial administration control within the managerial control structure becomes an essential condition for successfully reaching the established targets. A condition as such comes from the description of the desired outcome, of the indicators that will be used to assess it and the necessary means to obtain it. The objectives also have to express the agreement reached between hierarchic levels on dialogue grounds, thus ensuring the harmonization of the collective interests with those that determine the functioning of the enterprise. A very important part in this dialogue is played by the instrumental panel and also by the other devices of the financial administration control, which will have to be readjusted in a proper manner according to the changes occurred within the economic and business environment.financial administration control, managing and operative functions, performance, instrumental panel.

    Everything comes down to money? Migration and working life trajectories in a (post-)socialist context

    Using 25 life histories of Poles, this paper addresses the way in which migration has had an impact upon the trajectories of individuals’ working lives both under socialism and after 1989. In our discussion, we explore some of the connections between different waves of migration, bringing together historical and contemporary research on migration as well as engaging with current debates on post-socialism that problematize the disjuncture between socialist and post-socialist experience. Our contention here is that one way in which socialism and post-socialism might be integrated is through focusing on the experiences of individuals whose lives span these eras. We suggest that while there are continuities across the periods, there are also disjunctures created not only by the changed politico-legal context, but also through changed attitudes towards the role of migration as part of individual life trajectories

    Territorialisation of rural policies requires moving from a sectoral approach to service provision, and policies that focus exclusively on health and education, for example, to an understanding of overall service provision and quality, differentiated by rural area definition, not primarily by sector. An investigation of the expectations of stakeholders in rural Scotland, relating to availability, quality and accessibility of services, revealed that preferences were often different within different areas.     Integrated Quality Management Model on the Example of Destination Split

    Integrated Quality Management (IQM) is argumentative and efficient method proposed by the European Commission to reach and maintain tourist products and services quality in destinations. The paper presents IQM possibilities and phases in Split where tourism could base on events and contents quality and diversity, gastronomic and catering offer or destination cleanliness and ecological acceptability. Split should accept proved quality improvement method and adopt European IQM model. Benchmarking Split with Stockholm, IQM method implementation is suggested for Split to keep its comparative advantages and enable long-term market competitiveness. Adopting IQM method completes value chain of Split tourism, depending on cooperation of all included in tourist activity: local and state authorities, tourism entrepreneurs, local population.     Adult education in Malta : challenges and prospects

    Lifelong learning has long been a topic of discussion in Malta but, as this article shows, barriers to participation continue to exist. This article outlines the historical and economic changes that have led Malta to its present situation where adult education largely focuses on employment skills. Although available through a variety of channels, challenges still need to be met to ensure the participation of groups such as women, older people and immigrants. This article advocates a national strategy for adult education within which a balance is struck between learning for employment and learning as a public good.peer-reviewe
