The life and works of Jeremiah Joyce
This thesis traces the life and works of Jeremiah Joyce (1763-1816). Chapter 1 introduces Joyce and presents the methodology applied in the production of the thesis. Chapter 2 traces his upbringing as a Presbyterian dissenter and his experiences as a glazier's apprentice in Georgian London. It also gives an account of the influence of Arian and Unitarian teachers on Joyce and the education he received at Hackney College. Chapter 3 records Joyce's activities in radical metropolitan societies and his involvement in the 1794 Treason Trials. Chapter 4 explores Joyce's early writings produced whilst in the employment of the Earl of Stanhope. Chapter 5 gives an account of Joyce's life as a jobbing author in the first sixteen years of the nineteenth century.
Chapter 6 is the largest chapter and traces Joyce's works. The chapter is organised around Joyce's publishers and explores his many titles, some of which were published under pseudonyms. It probes the nature of Joyce's work as a writer, compiler and editor, and the different strategies he used to present scientific knowledge. It also traces the compromises between the theological, pedagogical and commercial concerns which dictated the form and content of the works.
The thesis is concerned to resurrect Joyce as an interesting figure whose importance as a political activist and science educationalist has hitherto been overlooked. His life and work is cast against the influences of the French Revolution on British society. In the early 1 790s, Joyce was engaged in political education and the distribution of radical literature. From the later 1790s, his energies were focused on science education. The thesis traces this transition as revealed in Joyce's personal history and literary output
Defining a sample template for governmental procurements of cryptographic products
Thesis (Master)--Izmir Institute of Technology, Computer Engineering, Izmir, 2006Includes bibliographical references (leaves: 46-47)Text in English; Abstract: Turkish and Englishxi, 47 leavesIt is a well-known truth that nobody can easily find a law, act, directive, code or a publicly available technical specification which describe crytopgraphic-based security systems and/or cryptographic modules in Turkey. Besides that, from the international aspect, the only government released standarts take place in the "Federal Information Standarts Publication (FIPS) 140-2", published by United States "National Institute of Standarts and Technology (NIST)" on May 25th, 2001 (which became the international standart after Final Commitee Document accepted as "ISO/IEC 19790:2006" on March 9th, 2006) which specifies the security requirements that should be satisfied by a cryptographic module.Since the protection of sensitive and valuable (sometimes lifecritical) data transfered via critical governmental cryptographic systems is very important and requires high confidentiality, the need for defining a sample template technical specification of those cryptographic systems is that much high. The sample template specification which is made up in this study aims to be a starting point or initiative for preparing a cryptographic module specification in governmental procurements
Discussing "human rights" with the displaced: The use of 'religion' and other discursive devices by displaced sudanese in "human rights" discourse
The notion of Human Rights can be discussed in an infinite variety of ways. It is a highly politicised notion which is ever-changing and can be utilised in any number of fashions as a discursive tool. This paper focuses on the Human Rights discourse of four displaced Sudanese. Their discourse was intimately connected with a variety of factors; including their understanding of what is currently taking place in Sudan, their ordeal in Sudan before exile, and how they are coping with life as externally displaced Sudanese
"The inevitable suggestion of Latin America": Linda Kitson and Leon Golub report to London in the aftermath of the Falklands/Malvinas war of 1982
This paper focuses on two contrasting bodies of work presented in London in the summer of 1982. British illustrator Linda Kitsonâs eye-witness drawings made during her commission by the Artistic Records Committee (ARC) of the Imperial War Museum (IWM) as Official Artist of the Falklands War and American painter Leon Golubâs exhibition Mercenaries and Interrogations at the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA). The aim is to unravel how âLatin Americaâ signified as an imaginary of the global north, specifically in Britain and the USA.  The paper analyses Kitson and Golubâs depictions of âLatin Americaâ within the representational logic of US aligned Thatcherist politics, and issues of defensive nationalism, individualism and militarized racism. These official and unofficial accounts of conflict in the global south are also considered within the context of the military/artistic networks and Lieutenant General Sir Frank Kitsonâs â Linda Kitsonâs uncle â doctrine of low intensity operations
