    Architecture and Protocols for Service and Application Deployment in Resource Aware Ubiquitous Environments

    Realizing the potential of pervasive computing will be predicated upon the availability of a flexible, mobility-aware infrastructure and the technologies to support seamless service management, provisioning and delivery. Despite the advances in routing and media access control technologies, little progress has been made towards large-scale deployment of services and applications in pervasive and ubiquitous environments. The lack of a fixed infrastructure, coupled with the time-varying characteristics of the underlying network topology, make service delivery challenging. The goal of this research is to address the fundamental design issues of a service infrastructure for ubiquitous environments and provide a comprehensive solution which is robust, scalable, secure and takes into consideration node mobility and resource constraints. We discuss the main functionalities of the proposed architecture, describe the algorithms for registration and discovery and present a power-aware location-driven message forwarding algorithm to enable node interaction in this architecture. We also provide security schemes to ensure user privacy in this architecture. The proposed architecture was evaluated through theuse of simulations. The results show that the service architecture is scalable and robust, even when node mobility is high. The comparative analysis shows that our message forwarding algorithm consistently outperforms contemporary location-driven algorithms. Furthermore, thisresearch work was implemented as a proof-of-concept implementation and tested on a real world scenario

    Security and Privacy Issues in Wireless Mesh Networks: A Survey

    This book chapter identifies various security threats in wireless mesh network (WMN). Keeping in mind the critical requirement of security and user privacy in WMNs, this chapter provides a comprehensive overview of various possible attacks on different layers of the communication protocol stack for WMNs and their corresponding defense mechanisms. First, it identifies the security vulnerabilities in the physical, link, network, transport, application layers. Furthermore, various possible attacks on the key management protocols, user authentication and access control protocols, and user privacy preservation protocols are presented. After enumerating various possible attacks, the chapter provides a detailed discussion on various existing security mechanisms and protocols to defend against and wherever possible prevent the possible attacks. Comparative analyses are also presented on the security schemes with regards to the cryptographic schemes used, key management strategies deployed, use of any trusted third party, computation and communication overhead involved etc. The chapter then presents a brief discussion on various trust management approaches for WMNs since trust and reputation-based schemes are increasingly becoming popular for enforcing security in wireless networks.     Energy aware routing protocols in ad hoc wireless networks

    In Mobile Ad hoc Network, communication at mobile nodes can be achieved by using multi-hop wireless links. The architecture of such a network is based, not on a centralized base station but on each node acting as a router to forward data packets to other nodes in the network. The aim of each protocol, in an ad hoc network, is to find valid routes between two communicating nodes. These protocols must be able to handle high mobility of the nodes which often cause changes in the network topology. Every ad hoc network protocol uses some form of a routing algorithm to transmit between nodes based on a mechanism that forwards packets from one node to another in the network. These algorithms have their own way of finding a new route or modifying an existing one when there are changes in the network. The novel area of this research is a proposed routing algorithm which improves routing and limits redundant packet forwarding, especially in dense networks. It reduces the routing messages and consequently power consumption, which increases the average remaining power and the lifetime of the network. The first aim of this research was to evaluate various routing algorithms in terms of power. The next step was to modify an existing ad hoc routing protocol in order to improve the power consumption. This resulted in the implementation of a dynamic probabilistic algorithm in the route request mechanism of an ad hoc On-Demand Distance Vector protocol which led to a 3.0% improvement in energy consumption. A further extension of the approach using Bayesian theory led to 3.3% improvement in terms of energy consumption as a consequence of a reduction in MAC Load for all network sizes, up to 100 nodes.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo

    Mobile Ad hoc Networking: Imperatives and Challenges

    Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) represent complex distributed systems that comprise wireless mobile nodes that can freely and dynamically self-organize into arbitrary and temporary, "ad-hoc" network topologies, allowing people and devices to seamlessly internetwork in areas with no pre-existing communication infrastructure, e.g., disaster recovery environments. Ad hoc networking concept is not a new one, having been around in various forms for over 20 years. Traditionally, tactical networks have been the only communication networking application that followed the ad hoc paradigm. Recently, the introduction of new technologies such as the Bluetooth, IEEE 802.11 and Hyperlan are helping enable eventual commercial MANET deployments outside the military domain. These recent evolutions have been generating a renewed and growing interest in the research and development of MANET. This paper attempts to provide a comprehensive overview of this dynamic field. It first explains the important role that mobile ad hoc networks play in the evolution of future wireless technologies. Then, it reviews the latest research activities in these areas, including a summary of MANET\u27s characteristics, capabilities, applications, and design constraints. The paper concludes by presenting a set of challenges and problems requiring further research in the future

    Encounter gossip: a high coverage broadcast protocol for MANET

    PhD ThesisMobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANETs) allow deployment of mobile wireless devices or nodes in a range of environments without any fixed infrastructure and hence at a minimal setup cost. Broadcast support that assures a high coverage (i.e., a large fraction of nodes receiving a broadcast) is essential for hosting user applications, and is also non-trivial to achieve due to the nature of devices and mobility. We propose Encounter Gossip, a novel broadcast protocol, which holds minimal state and is unaware of network topology. Coverage obtained can be made arbitrarily close to 1 at a moderate cost of extra message tra c, even in partition-prone networks. Under certain simplifying assumptions, it is shown that a high coverage is achieved by making a total of O(n ln n) broadcasts, where n is the number of nodes, and the time to propagate a message is O(ln n). The e ect of various network parameters on the protocol performance is examined. We then propose modifications to minimise the number of redundant transmissions without compromising the achieved coverage. Two approaches are pursued: timer based and history based. The e ectiveness of each of these approaches is assessed through an extensive set of simulation experiments in the context of two mobility models. Specifically, we introduce a new heuristic alpha policy which achieves significant reduction in redundancy with negligible reduction in coverage. A generalisation to multiple broadcasts proceeding in parallel is proposed and the protocol is refined to reduce problems that can occur due to the effects of high mobility when transmitting a large number of messages. Finally, we implement and validate Encounter Gossip in the context of a real-life mobile ad-hoc network. All these investigations suggest that the protocol, together with the proposed modifications and re nements, is suited to MANETs of varying degrees of node densities and speeds
